DIET DURING PREGNANCY
Abstract
Over the years, possibly more contradictory and confusing information has been published about diet in pregnancy than on any other nutritional subject. Earlier this century it was generally considered that diet during pregnancy greatly affected foetal growth and survival. Post‐war studies have not substantiated this and current opinion is that the satisfactory outcome of pregnancy is more likely to be influenced by better medical care, environmental factors and improvements in the diet taken in infancy and childhood: in other words prior to conception. The importance placed by obstetricians on adequate diet throughout childhood to maturity is not surprising since pelvic size is closely correlated to height.
