Abstract
In spite of the recent utterance from Whitehall that Mr Roy Hattersley's department was going to “look into profit margins on paint”, the facts are that the average profit margin on sales of paints and printing inks shows a fall for two consecutive years totalling 21 % and the average return on capital has slumped to 6.4%. These figures are given in the 1977 edition of the Business Ratio Report on Paint and Printing Ink Manufacturers, published by ICC Business Ratios, 81 City Road, London EC1Y 1BD.
