Abstract

To many young people seeking what path to follow after leaving school or college, the phrase ‘a career in journalism’ has a rich relish about it. It can conjure up visions of being a roving foreign correspondent, chatting with statesmen on equal terms, taking drinks with stars of the entertainment world or with leading sportsmen or sportswomen. Or maybe the aspiring journalist already sees his or her name as a by‐line above a newspaper column devoted to personal opinions on various subjects in the news, or becoming a big‐name TV reporter in world‐trotting Alan Whicker style.
