And they call themselves teachers!
Abstract
Long before the Prime Minister's speech in Cardiff last October industry had been complaining that many school‐leavers applying for jobs could scarcely write their own language in a way that was either legible or even understandable, and could not do the simplest arithmetic. Was this the fault of the youngsters? Was the system that has as its aim equipping children to lead a full, fruitful, and useful life in some way to blame? Or were employers, universities, and technical colleges setting standards that were too high? Whatever the reasons the problem is there, is recognised, and is crying out for a solution.
