Viewpoint: Higher education for the sake of — can we afford it?
Abstract
By any quantitative measure, the expansion of higher education in Britain during the past twelve years has been a remarkable achievement; although the cost of producing a graduate, far from diminishing due to increased productivity, has risen annually. But it is now appropriate to ask whether this widening access to higher learning was thoroughly conceived or even desirable. What has been the goal of the exercise? Should it be viewed as:
