GLASGOW
Abstract
This issue is the first of a series of six, dealing with Britain's major regional centres. Between now and next May we are publishing educational profiles on Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle, Coventry and the ILEA — in that order. We chose deliberately to deal with the most difficult city first, since Glasgow has specific social and educational problems present elsewhere but in far greater abundance. The purpose of our investigation was threefold: first to reach some understanding of the city's methods of tackling their problems, second to highlight some of the essential differences between the Scots and English systems of education, and finally to attempt an overall picture of how education in Glasgow relates to its people's needs and their environment.
