Effective listening
Abstract
Although a great deal of managerial time is spent listening, there is a tendency to assume that if a person can hear, he listens effectively. Contrast this with reading. At school time is spent identifying the retarded readers and diagnosing their shortcomings. Later, firms may send staff on effective or quicker reading courses. Not so with listening. Training in this skill is rarely given. In part, this is because deficiencies in listening are less apparent.
