… and the brightest shall be made dim
Abstract
Examinations fulfil a variety of functions in the educational system. Presuming that most boys and girls do not naturally always try their hardest, they encourage industry and hard work, they determine that a set body of study is covered, they test the competence both of pupils and teachers, and they provide through external examinations a court of appeal against the prejudice of a school and its staff. In a wider context, examinations offer some guarantee of professional competence amongst eg doctors, engineers, accountants, airline pilots.
