Purpose – Reports on the extent to which UK companies are riding out the recession by relocating and using the opportunity to expand. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at how relocating businesses can take advantage of rising unemployment, reduced demand and competition for qualified labor, and less employee pressure on salary increases, while at the same time being able to count on more political and financial support from local regions. Offers a guide to the UK’s different regions’ suitability for accommodating new business, with a focus on the local economy, infrastructure, workforce, biggest employers, quality of life, property costs, local incentives, major schemes, and little known facts of interest. Assesses the East of England, East Midlands, London, North East, North West, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South East, South West, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & the Humber. Originality/value – Presents a review of the facilities offered by UK regions for those companies fortunate enough to be able to expand and relocate during a period of economic depression.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 0025-1925Reference: 39AA359
