Purpose – Looks at how board members can benefit from training. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at how HR departments can form strategic partnerships with the board by using its insights in ways that are relevant, useful and engaging, noting that its perception as a strategic partner is crucial to its ability to enhance board training. Shows how board members may also require training on basic issues such as the proper use of computers and the Internet, avoiding conflicts of interest and inadvertently speaking for the organisation. Quotes a number of organisations on how they use training at senior level. Recommends a number of quick tips to help strengthen board skills and where HR adds value. Findings – Argues that human resources has an important role in strengthening boards of directors through coaching and training.
