About the Editors
Janet Crum is the Dean of the Library at Fresno State in Fresno, California. She has held a variety of leadership and management positions in academic and health sciences libraries since 2002, including department head roles at Oregon Health and Science University (Portland, OR) and Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ) and director roles at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library (Tucson) and City of Hope National Medical Center (Duarte, CA.) She's the author of numerous journal articles and conference presentations and coedited Essential Leadership Skills for Health Sciences Information Professionals (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) and Supporting Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Advances in Library Administration and Organization, v. 40). Her professional and research interests include leading remote and hybrid work teams, employee engagement, effective library leadership, new and emerging roles for academic and health sciences librarians, and the impact of academic and health sciences libraries on key institutional outcomes.
David H. Ketchum has 24 years of academic library experience. He earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree in 2008 and has held a variety of appointed and elected leadership positions within libraries and professional library organizations. David is currently the Director of Access and Delivery Services at the University of Oregon Libraries. David's professional interests include operational management, library public service, employee development, and strategic planning. When David isn't working, he enjoys learning about almost anything, spending time with his kids, playing music, and exploring nature.
About the Contributors
Bethany Bones (she/her) is the Resource Sharing Student Manager and lending lead for interlibrary loan at the University of Arizona Libraries, where she served as the Chair of the Diversity, Social Justice, and Equity Council from 2022 to 2023. She earned her MLIS at the University of Arizona and has worked in public-facing library positions for most of her career, often including late nights and weekends. Her experiences in these roles have contributed to her interest in trauma-informed and equity work within libraries.
Melanie Bopp is the Head of Access Services at Tufts University's Tisch Library, where she handles a variety of customer service and information provision challenges, working to create that link between user and information. Previously, she was the Head of Access Services at George Mason University's Fenwick Library. Melanie received her MLIS from Louisiana State University in 2011 and has centered her work on trauma-informed and person-centered practices.
Elena Carrillo is the Head of Access Services and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago Richard J. Daley Library. She has an MLIS and an MFA and has worked for more than 15 years in leadership positions within Access Services.
Elizabeth Dill (she/her) is the Dean of University Library at California State University, Long Beach in Long Beach, California. In this role, she is responsible for the leadership, operation, and development of the University Library. Dill has been actively involved in various library-related organizations and initiatives. She coedited a book for the Association of College and Research Libraries entitled, “Intersections of Open Educational Resources and Information Literacy.” She has been a vocal advocate for open access and diversity in librarianship and has written and spoken extensively on these topics.
Alexandra Franz-Harder (she/her) is a Library Assistant with the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Phoenix, Arizona. She formerly worked as an Administrative Assistant II in the University of Arizona Libraries' Administration department. She graduated summa cum laude with her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Arizona's iSchool in May 2022.
Kayla Gourlay is the Business and Economics Librarian at George Mason University. She is responsible for supporting the research needs of over 6,000 students, faculty, and community members for the School of Business and the Department of Economics at George Mason, which includes collection development, research support, outreach, and instruction and curriculum building. She received her MSLS degree with a concentration in Reference and User Services from Clarion University in May 2020. Formerly, she worked primarily in library instructional roles, and her areas of interest include business information literacy and sustainable, inclusive instruction.
Phenessa A. Gray is the Founder and Principal Consultant of EMSight Global, LLC, based in Jacksonville, Florida. With over 25 years of experience in library administration and management across secondary and higher education, Dr Gray has also held leadership roles in corporate, government, and nonprofit sectors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a Creative Writing minor from Florida State University, a Master of Science in Library Services from Clark Atlanta University, a Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Phoenix, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management from Capella University. In addition to her professional roles, Dr Gray is a Published Author, Speaker, and Senior Workplace Culture Consultant. Her research interests encompass dimensions of wellness, emotional intelligence, trauma-informed librarianship, workplace well-being, and holistic change leadership. Dr Gray is also an active volunteer in her community.
Andrea Harrow (she/her) is the Clinical Librarian for the Norris Medical Library and Keck Medical Center of the University of Southern California. Andrea serves as the library liaison to the university hospitals. Andrea received her MLIS from the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University) and has been a hospital librarian since 2005.
Robyn Huff-Eibl (she/her) is the Head of the Access and Information Services Department at the University of Arizona Libraries. Her work also involves leading the libraries' Space Planning Committee and the student Library Advisory Councils. She served on the campus Pandemic Academic Coordination Work Group and currently serves on the campus Well-Being Task Force and Basic Needs Coalition Sub-Committee. She earned her MLIS from the University of Arizona and is a UCLA Senior Fellow.
Meghan Hupe, MSLS, DM/AHIP is the Director of Information and Delivery Services at Georgetown Medical Center's Library, Dahlgren Memorial. She has worked at Dahlgren since 2005 as a Library Assistant and then became a Librarian. The author graduated with an MSLS from The Catholic University of America in 2008.
Kaitlyn L. Kinney is the interim Head of Access Services and the current Access and Instructional Support Coordinator at George Mason University Libraries. She manages consortium loan services and course reserves and currently serves on the Library Leadership Council. Her work in these capacities is centered on community engagement as well as organizational change and development. Kaitlyn received her MA from George Mason University in 2019.
Dana V. Lema (she/her) is an Assistant Librarian and the Discovery Unit Lead for the University of Arizona Libraries. She obtained her MLIS from San Jose State University and worked for three years for the San Jose Public Library system as a branch librarian and the Electronic Resources Librarian during the 2020 COVID-19 nationwide pandemic and shutdowns. Her experience serving patrons traumatized by this and other events has driven her interest in providing trauma-informed services in library settings.
Aira Lipson joined the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Library in 2015. She has worked in many facets of the library during that time, Access Services, the Makers Lab, and Open Scholarship. As a Manager of Access Services, Aira supervises circulation, reserves, stack maintenance, and information desk staffing at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Library locations. Aira has worked in libraries across Northern California since 1997. She is dedicated to a user-centered approach to library service and is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the library by treating people with respect and understanding. She has a dual emphasis BA in Art History and Studio Art and a MLIS with an emphasis on Reference and Instruction.
Micquel Little joined the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2019 as Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning. In this role, she provides leadership, vision, strategic direction, and coordination in developing, assessing, and sustaining the library's services and spaces that support teaching, research, and clinical activities. Micquel oversees multiple research and learning programs at the UCSF Library, ensuring consistent direction, leadership, administration of learning activities, processes, evaluations, and resource management. She leads strategic program improvements to increase educational quality and operational efficiency through managing program leaders in the following areas: Access Services, Data Science and Open Scholarship, Education Research, Makers Lab, Instructional Design, Technology Innovations, and the hospital libraries located at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
Jenny Meslener currently serves as the Head of Social Sciences Team and Mason Square Library at George Mason University. She is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of innovative library services provided by the Social and Behavioral Science librarians and the overall management and operations of the Mason Square branch campus library. Jenny earned her MLIS from the University of Rhode Island and her MEd in Educational Leadership and Management from Fitchburg State University. Formerly, she served in other instructional and leadership roles, and her areas of interest include mentorship and team development.
Nisha Mody (she/her) is a Relational and Healing and Life Coach and former library worker. She worked as the Associate Director of the Network of the National Library of Medicine for the Pacific Southwest Region. She was also the Teaching and Learning Lead while working as Health & Life Sciences Librarian at UCLA focusing on reference and instruction for the David Geffen School of Medicine. Nisha teaches about how to be trauma-informed in library settings through a self-paced course and is a life coach for people moving toward collective liberation.
Jennifer E. Nutefall is the Dean of Libraries and Museums at Saint Louis University (SLU) in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to SLU, she was the Dean of University Libraries at the University of Northern Colorado and University Librarian at Santa Clara University (SCU). In 2017, the SCU Library was selected as the winner of the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in the University Library category. She has also worked at Oregon State University, George Washington University, and the State University of New York (SUNY), College at Brockport. She edited the book Service Learning, Information Literacy and Libraries (2016) which received the Rockman Publication of the Year Award. She holds a BS in Journalism, an MLS from Syracuse University, and an MA in Education and Human Development from George Washington University.
Kevin O'Brien is the Head of the Access to Resources Department and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago Library of the Health Services. He has worked for over two decades in the areas of access services and resource sharing.
Gerald J. Perry (he/his) is the Associate Dean Emeritus with the University of Arizona Libraries. Jerry is a past President of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and is a Fellow of the Association. He served as a library professional for nearly 40 years, with over 45 years of total library experience. Academic interests include leadership and administration, informatics, evidence-based practice, and diversity and inclusion.
Cindy Pierard (she/her/hers) is the Assistant University Librarian for Research Services with Fondren Library at Rice University in Houston, Texas (USA). She has previously worked at the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and the University of Kansas. Cindy has led and contributed to emergency planning and response efforts at the institution level and is active in IFLA's Evidence for Global and Disaster Health Special Interest Group. She is excited to join Fondren Library, a designated Communities Respond to Extreme Weather (CREW) Climate Resilience Hub for the Houston area. In addition to emergency planning, Cindy's interests include student success, student scholarship and creative work, and space design and planning.
Tori Rodriguez possesses over 10 years of experience in academic libraries, having served at George Mason University and, most recently, Northern Virginia Community College. Her expertise in Access and User Services includes managing the circulation and information desk, as well as overseeing course reserves. Currently, Tori is leveraging the skills she developed in her library career in a county government role. Her primary interests lie in the critical assessment of departmental policies and procedures, organizational change, leadership, and process improvement.
Dylan Romero is responsible for managing the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Makers Lab in the UCSF Library. Dylan supports both educational and creative applications of emerging technologies such as 3D printers, 3D scanners, and virtual reality. He has worked in education since 2003 and has a BS in Business Administration and received an MA in Instructional Technologies, both from San Francisco State University. Dylan is a champion of physical and digital spaces in the library environment where exploration, tinkering, and collaboration are strongly encouraged.
Karin Saric (she/her) is a Health Sciences Librarian at the Norris Medical Library for the University of Southern California (USC). She serves as the Library Liaison to various allied health divisions, has worked with global health groups, and has coordinated various wellness and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at USC.
Hannah M. Schilperoort (she/her) is the Head of the Wilson Dental Library at the University of Southern California (USC). Hannah is the coauthor of several health sciences systematic reviews, has published articles on information literacy and assessment in online education, and contributes to LGBTQIA+ cultural competency in health sciences education and other diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at USC.
Anne Schultz (she/her/hers) is the acting Director for Access Services with the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) at the University of New Mexico (USA). Anne manages the team responsible for frontline Access Services and Resource Sharing across three campus libraries and the university's high bay, high density storage facility. She has many years of direct experience with disaster response and recovery in a library setting.
Jung Mi Scoulas is an Associate Professor and the Assessment Coordinator for the University of Illinois Chicago Library, holding a PhD in educational psychology with expertise in library assessment, research design, survey design, and student learning.
Megan Senseney (she/her) is the Head of the Research Engagement Department at the University of Arizona Libraries. Her research and scholarship focus on the social dimensions of data-intensive research initiatives, and she is also interested in operationalizing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in academic library settings. She obtained her MS LIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Lynne Serviss is the Associate University Librarian, User Services, and Community Engagement at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She has worked at the Seneca College, the University of Victoria, and the Mohawk College. In her current position, she oversees four departments – Lyons New Media, Library Accessibility Services, Makerspace, and Access Services – and focuses on the development of user focused and innovative programs and services. In addition, she is tasked with developing community-focused partnerships with organizations and groups on campus and in the broader community. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Trent University.
Lauren Slingluff (she/her) is the University Librarian at University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut. Throughout her career, she has built expertise in strategic planning, leading change, and organizational development. Slingluff teaches professional development courses on academic library budgeting practices as well as being sought for workshops and consultation on strategic planning processes. A third-generation library worker, she is passionate about service and has presented and published on topics of social justice, open educational resources, and leadership practices within academic librarianship.
Annie M. Thompson, MSLS (she/her) is the Head of the Norris Medical Library at the University of Southern California (USC) and has served in various roles since joining USC in 2008. Her current academic interests include mitigation of toxic academic library environments, empathetic leadership and supervisor support, and trauma-informed approaches to management.
