Acknowledgements

This book marked my time in Glasgow between 2013 and 2017, and lasted into the year of 2021, three years after I completed my doctoral study. I would like to thank all participants who opened their doors to let me enter their lives. It was humbling to be trusted as such.

I owe a huge thank you to Professor Satnam Virdee and Dr Matt Dawson, who helped me throughout and beyond the PhD journey.

Thank you to Katy Mathers, Helen Beddow, Philippa Grand, Alice Ford and Brindha Thirunavukkarasu for their work at Emerald.

The final thank you is for my family and friends, especially my parents, Cao Ying and Pang Jinli, who have always been unconditionally supportive and loving, and Cao Weilin and Zhai Yunqiao, my dearest cousin and grandma. James, you have been a constant source of positivity.

This book is dedicated to Cao Feng and Cao Guangbin, whom I miss dearly, every day.
