Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to examine two award‐winning schemes in the UK that aim to provide retailers with skilled employees.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper focuses on: the Cheshire Oaks Retail Academy (Cora), an initiative of Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council, the West Cheshire College, landlords BAA/McArthur Glenn, and Cheshire and Warrington Jobcentre Plus; and a link between thecentre:mk and Milton Keynes College.
Findings
The paper finds that both schemes have been highly successful in training people and helping them to secure and retain employment.
Practical implications
The paper provides two useful case studies in an economic sector that looks set to continue to grow.
Originality/value
The paper highlights the value of partnerships between employers and training providers in meeting skill deficits.
