Abstract

People who compile mainstream dictionaries are not noted for rushing into print as soon as any new word or phrase comes into being. They tend to wait, let it float around for a while and see if it disappears without trace or, alternatively, it demonstrates longevity and becomes a useful addition to their list of meanings. Two relative newcomers which have earned their rightful place alongside the words and phrases English speakers have been using for centuries, appear many pages apart in the dictionary, but are firmly linked as part of the cause and effect of a problem which is haunting businesses worldwide.
