Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore and understand the state of the art of managing digital resources focusing on the availability of risk strategy practice by cultural institutions in Malaysia, in order to maintain and preserve their digitised resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The multiple case study approach is adopted, where three selected cultural institutions participate.

Findings

One of the significant findings is the ability of the institutions to sustain their digitised resources. The paper discusses the issues related to the risk management of digital resources in Malaysian cultural institutions.

Research limitations/implications

This paper offers a comparative evaluation among three main cultural institutions in Malaysia.

Practical implications

The paper's findings and discovery are significant in highlighting the crucial elements which need to be addressed to ensure the sustainability and successful implementation of any digitisation project.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper contribute towards the dissemination of the new knowledge specifically in the management of digital preservation of cultural resources available in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to uncover the perceptions of information professionals with regards to the establishment of a National Digital Cultural Heritage Repository Center (NDCHR) in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a modified Delphi study to identify the factors that contribute towards the establishment of an NDCHR in Malaysia. A three‐round modified Delphi study was used in this study to obtain consensus among the experts with regards to the factors that contribute towards the establishment of the central repository.

Findings

The establishment of an NDCHR requires collaboration efforts among the different types of cultural institution in Malaysia. The aspiration of the establishment to improve accessibility, resource discovery, preservation and promotion of the nation's cultural heritage information would contribute toward restructuring some common grounds and thinking among the different types of cultural institutions with respect to effective approaches to managing and organising the nation's digital cultural heritage information.

Practical implications

Findings and discovery of the study are significant in providing a general framework to establish an NDCHR in Malaysia

Originality/value

The outcome of the study will contribute toward the establishment of a central repository for digital cultural heritage information in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to compare the National Library of Malaysia (NLM)'s cataloguing in publication (CIP) records with their permanent records in the NLM's online public access catalogue (OPAC) database.

Design/methodology/approach

The study compares the description of records in the NLM CIP versus NLM OPAC in terms of similarities and differences in the bibliographic elements for each record. The study selected the NLM's CIP records from January to April 2000, allowing more than 5 years for publishers to publish the registered CIP titles and also the NLM to make the records available in their OPAC database.

Findings

The findings indicate that libraries that use NLM's CIP records in their copy cataloguing activity should not rely 100 per cent on the records. Verifications and modifications need to be carried out to ensure accuracy and quality of their catalogue records.

Research limitations/implications

That Malaysian experience confirms research carried out previously elsewhere.

Practical implications

The findings of the study are significant in terms of giving data about whether NLM's CIP records are trustworthy sources for the practical task of copy cataloguing or not.

Originality/value

Although comparison studies of the accuracy and consistency of CIP records versus OPAC records are commonplace, having been conducted extensively since the 1980s in a variety of contexts, such a comparison study of CIP records versus OPAC records has never been conducted in Malaysia. With the increased usage of web‐based OPACs as one source option for copy cataloguing, it is imperative to ensure the records copied are consistent and accurate to avoid post‐alteration of the bibliographic description.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of digitisation initiatives by cultural institutions in Malaysia. Evidently no research has been conducted to investigate the state of digitisation initiatives by cultural institutions in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts an exploratory survey, to explore the state of cultural heritage digitisation. A total of 60 public cultural institutions in Malaysia were involved in the study.

Findings

Digitisation of cultural heritage materials is not new in Malaysia. Different types of cultural heritage institutions have embarked on several digitisation projects. Various types of cultural heritage materials have been digitised and made publicly accessible.

Practical implications

Findings and discovery of the study are significant in providing a comprehensive background and scenario of organisation, description and retrieval of local content resources in electronic forms in Malaysia.

Originality/value

The outcome of the study will contribute to the new knowledge in managing digitised cultural and heritage resources in cultural and heritage institutions in Malaysia.
