Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a novel robotic system for airport pavement inspection tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

The cloud-edge-terminal-based distributed architecture is designed for the proposed robotic system. Then, the following three major parts are designed and deployed, respectively: Terminal: the wheeled-robot-based data collection system. Edge: remote monitoring and data analysis system. Cloud: shared database center of the inspection data and knowledge.

Findings

Validation and application results show that the proposed system satisfies the demands of automated airport pavement inspection tasks and saves the cost of manpower and time.

Originality/value

The proposed system provides a novel solution for the full process of airport pavement inspection. Compared with the traditional manual method, the robotic system can guarantee complete coverage and provide high-precision pavement inspection results with less time and labor costs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a new intelligent wall-climbing welding robot system for large-scale steel structure manufacture, which is composed of robot body, control system and welding system.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors design the robot system according to application requirements, validate the design through simulation and experiments and use the robot in actual production.

Findings

Experimental results show that the robot system satisfies the demands of automatic welding of large-scale ferromagnetic structure, which contributes much to on-site manufacturing of such structures.

Practical implications

The robot can work with better quality and efficiency compared with manual welding and other semi-automatic welding devices, which can much improve large-scale steel structure manufacturing.

Originality/value

The robot system is a novel solution for large-scale steel structures welding. There are three major advantages: the robot body with reliable adsorption ability, large payload capability and good mobility which meet the requirements of welding; the control system with good welding seam tracking accuracy and intelligent automatic welding ability; and friendly human – computer interface which makes the robot easy to use.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the adhesion of Larch wood, by conducting a study of hydrogen peroxide treatment on Larch wood surfaces.

Design/methodology/approach

Effect of surface treatment of Larch by H2O2 on the adhesion of Larch wood, as indicated by compression shear strength, was examined in this paper. Surface properties of Larch wood, such as contact angle were evaluated. Shear strength tests for measuring adhesion of Larch blocks were conducted. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis was employed to examine the chemical functionality of the untreated and treated Larch surface.

Findings

It is found that hydrogen peroxide treatment improved the adhesion of Larch glued laminated timber. The dry compression shear strength of Larch glued laminated timber treated with H2O2 solution is increased by 19.7 per cent compared with the untreated Larch glued laminated timber. FTIR results showed that the intensity of absorption band at 1,730 cm−1 for H2O2 solution‐treated Larch increased as compared with the untreated Larch wood. The results of contact angle showed that wettability of Larch treated with H2O2 solution increased markedly compared with the untreated Larch.

Research limitations/implications

The improvement of adhesion as a result of hydrogen peroxide treatment mainly applies to radial Larch surface.

Practical implications

This study provided a simple and practical solution to improving the adhesion of Larch laminated timber glued with water‐based Polymer Isocyanate (WPI) adhesive. Such a hydrogen peroxide surface treatment may be applied to other types of wood.

Originality/value

This method of improving the adhesion of Larch glued laminated timber can be used for other Larch products glued with WPI.

Abstract

Purpose

The dependence on the use of information systems for nearly every activity and functions in the internet is increasingly high. This form of interconnectedness has bolstered national economies, enhanced how governments interact with their citizens and how ordinary people connect with friends and family. However, this dependence has equally resulted to a high rise in vulnerability, threat and risk associated with more use of information and communication technology. Cyber-attacks that have the potential to disrupt or damage information system infrastructure are getting more complex with some level of sophistication. Traditional protection of information system infrastructure is no longer sufficient; systems have proven to be immune to failure or incidents. This paper aims to ensure that there is a continuous availability of services through a fail-safe proof.

Design/methodology/approach

MYSQL replication technique was used to develop a model based on three-tier layers using the principle of network interdependency and the replication techniques. Tier 1 depicts a Telecom organization serving as service provider that provides internet service to Tier 2 organization – a Bank; Tier 3 is the financial App that can be used by bank staff and customers. The fail-safe mode integrated mechanism enables Tier 3 to continue to render its services in the event of an attack on Tier 1 such as DDoS without disruption.

Findings

This technique succeeded in mitigating the loss of data if cyber incident occurred or reception of uninterrupted services is countered, which give rise to future master-to-master architecture.

Research limitations/implications

The study conducted is limited to the design and development of a fail-safe system for interdependent networks or systems using MYSQL replication technique.

Originality/value

In an interdependent environment such as the cyberspace, the sectors are interdependent for optimal results. The originality of the work ensures that there is availability of services which is sustained and that data integrity is assured using the fail-safe technique based on MySQL replication method.
