Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review recent advances and applications of abrasive processes for microelectronics fabrications.

Design/methodology/approach

More than 80 patents and journal and conference articles published recently are reviewed. The topics covered are chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) for semiconductor devices, key/additional process conditions for CMP, and polishing and grinding for microelectronics fabrications and fan-out wafer level packages (FOWLPs).

Findings

Many reviewed articles reported advanced CMP for semiconductor device fabrications and innovative research studies on CMP slurry and abrasives. The surface finish, sub-surface damage and the strength of wafers are important issues. The defects on wafer surfaces induced by grinding/polishing would affect the stability of diced ultra-thin chips. Fracture strengths of wafers are dependent on the damage structure induced during dicing or grinding. Different thinning processes can reduce or enhance the fracture strength of wafers. In the FOWLP technology, grinding or CMP is conducted at several key steps. Challenges come from back-grinding and the wafer warpage. As the Si chips of the over-molded FOWLPs are very thin, wafer grinding becomes critical. The strength of the FOWLPs is significantly affected by grinding.

Originality/value

This paper attempts to provide an introduction to recent developments and the trends in abrasive processes for microelectronics manufacturing. With the references provided, readers may explore more deeply by reading the original articles. Original suggestions for future research work are also provided.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the turning strategies for the bounding quadruped robot with an active spine and explore the significant role of the spine in the turning locomotion.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the bounding gait combining the pitch motion of the spine with the leg motion is presented. In this gait, the spine moves in phase with the front legs. All the joints of the legs and spine are controlled by cosine signals to simplify the control, and the initial position and oscillation amplitude of the joints can be tuned. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed gait, the spine joints are set with different initial positions and oscillation amplitudes, and the initial position and oscillation amplitude of the leg joints are tuned to make the virtual model do the best locomotion in terms of the speed and stability in the simulation. The control signals are also used to control a real robot called Transleg. Then, three different turning strategies are proposed, including driving the left and right legs with different strides, swaying the spine in the yaw direction and combining the above two methods. Finally, these strategies are tested on the real robot.

Findings

The stable bounding locomotion can be achieved using the proposed gait. With the spine motion, the speed of the bounding locomotion is increased; the turning radius is reduced; and the angular velocity is increased.

Originality/value

A simple and flexible planning of the bounding gait and three turning strategies for the bounding quadruped robot are proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed bounding gait, along with the beneficial effect of the spine motion in the yaw direction on the turning locomotion is demonstrated with the computer simulations and robot experiments. This will be instructive for the designing and actuating of the other quadruped robots.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to tele-operate the movement of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the obstructed environment with asymmetric time-varying delays. A simple passive proportional velocity errors plus damping injection (P-like) controller is proposed to deal with the asymmetric time-varying delays in the aerial teleoperation system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents both theoretical and real-time experimental results of the bilateral teleoperation system of a UAV for collision avoidance over the wireless network. First, a position-velocity workspace mapping is used to solve the master-slave kinematic/dynamic dissimilarity. Second, a P-like controller is proposed to ensure the stability of the time-delayed bilateral teleoperation system with asymmetric time-varying delays. The stability is analyzed by the Lyapunov–Krasovskii function and the delay-dependent stability criteria are obtained under linear-matrix-inequalities conditions. Third, a vision-based localization is presented to calibrate the UAV’s pose and provide the relative distance for obstacle avoidance with a high accuracy. Finally, the performance of the teleoperation scheme is evaluated by both human-in-the-loop simulations and real-time experiments where a single UAV flies through the obstructed environment.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate that the teleoperation system can maintain passivity and collision avoidance can be achieved with a high accuracy for asymmetric time-varying delays. Moreover, the operator could tele-sense the force reflection to improve the maneuverability in the aerial teleoperation.

Originality/value

A real-time bilateral teleoperation system of a UAV for collision avoidance is performed in the laboratory. A force and visual interface is designed to provide force and visual feedback of the slave environment to the operator.

Abstract

Purpose

As globalization increasingly affects the university sector around the world, there is a great advantage being placed on those universities that can respond timely and flexibly with appropriate innovation and internationalization strategies. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature of strategic aspects of innovation and internationalization in higher education. Based upon the premises of the Salford Prime Minister's Initiative 2 (PMI2) project, this paper aims to develop a theoretical framework which demonstrates how various objectives of innovation and internationalization can be translated and achieved in a learning organization context.

Design/methodology/approach

Theoretical analysis supported by empirical experiences. The paper explores the ideas and links between globalization and innovation/internationalization in higher education. The main concern of the paper is the implementation strategy of innovation and internationalization rather than the concepts and process of innovation and internationalization in higher education.

Findings

With examination of the impact of globalization upon higher education and strategic aspects of innovation and internationalization, this paper focuses on the implementation of innovation and internationalization and how to translate the overall institutional strategy into managed objectives. Organizational learning not only asserts and promotes organizational outcome and improved performance but also plays a significant role in achieving innovation and internationalization, e.g. staff engagement, staff motivation, empowerment, leadership and configuration. Furthermore, the paper identifies a number of strategic elements which are crucial to the successful implementation strategy of innovation and internationalization. The paper is based on the Salford PMI2 project and how various objectives were implemented which demonstrates the significance of collaboration in higher education between China and the UK.

Originality/value

Based on a comprehensive examination of the theoretical elements on innovation and internationalization and critical analysis of the Salford PMI2 project, adapting a typology of learning organizational framework, this study emphasizes the significance of incorporating both cultural and organizational learning factors. The paper develops a theoretical framework which enables policy makers and decision makers to make appropriate arrangements in designing international development strategy. Furthermore, the paper addresses the appropriateness and effectiveness of knowledge transfer, individual and organizational learning during the implementation of the internationalization strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

A W-band antennas-in-packages (AIP) module with a hybrid stacked glass-compound wafer level fan-out process was presented. Heterogeneous radio frequency (RF) chips were integrated into one single module with a microscale fan-out process. This paper aims to find a new strategy for 5G communication with 3D integration of multi-function chips.

Design/methodology/approach

The AIP module was composed of two stacked layers: the antenna layer and RF layer. After architecture design and performance simulation, the module was fabricated, The 8 × 8 antenna array was lithography patterned on the 12 inch glass wafer to reduce the parasitic parameters effect, and the signal feeding interface was fabricated on the backside of the glass substrate.

Findings

AIP module demonstrates a size of 180 mm × 180mm × 1mm, and its function covers the complete RF front-end chain from the antenna to signal to process and can be applied in 5 G communication and automotive components.

Originality/value

With three RF multi-function chips and two through silicon via (TSV) chips were embedded in the 12 inch compound wafer through the fan-out packaging process; two layers were interconnected with TSV and re-distributed layers.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objectives of this article are to systematically explore whether and how certain WeChat use motives could lead to bridging social capital, bonding social capital and civic engagement among young people.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected from a large-scale online survey of 1208 young people in mainland China. Zero-order correlation analyses and structural equation modeling were carried out to examine the corresponding hypotheses.

Findings

Obtained findings show that WeChat use for informational and social motivations are positively associated with bonding and bridging social capital. Moreover, bonding social capital could mediate the relationship between WeChat usage for informational and relational motivations and civic engagement.

Research limitations/implications

Theoretically, this article underlines the unique social and technological affordances of WeChat by exploring mobile social media use and how it would contribute to the quality of democracy by fostering young people's engagement in civic life. Practically, bridging and bonding social capital play significant roles in enhancing young people's civic engagement, which could be the meaningful resource for mobile social media designers, managers and government officials.

Originality/value

These obtained outcomes underlined the vital role of these newly emerging communication technologies in fostering democratic involvement and production of social capital in contemporary socially networked society.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore how hospitable telemedicine services empowered patients during the COVID-19. Expanding from the technology aspect, this research integrated the philosophy of hospitality organizational culture by including factors related to human-human interaction as significant predictors for patients’ sense of empowerment (perceived competence and control) in coping with their emotional stress (anxiety and isolation).

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were obtained from 409 general consumers who have used video-based virtual consultation since February 2020. Stepwise multiple regression and simple linear regression analyses were used for hypotheses testing.

Findings

The results reveal that the doctors’ reliability, responsiveness and empathy significantly predict patients’ perceived competence and control. Perceived usefulness and convenience of telemedicine technology enhance patients’ perceived competence and control. Patients’ sense of empowerment significantly reduces their anxiety and sense of isolation.

Research limitations/implications

To fully understand the role of hospitality in people’s telemedicine experiences, future studies are encouraged to not only examine the patients-clinicians interactions but also explore the patients-support staff interactions.

Practical implications

Health care providers’ “bed-side” manners empower patients in managing their emotional stress. Health care providers should be trained for their empathetic ability and communication skills. Strategies such as collaborating with hospitality schools and business schools can be implemented to help build medical student’s patient-centric attitudes and skills.

Originality/value

This paper provided empirical evidence for the value of hospitality in health care and offered useful suggestions for health care providers, especially by empowering vulnerable people during catastrophic events such as COVID-19.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to bibliometrically and visually analyze and review hospitality and tourism marketing studies published from 2000–2020.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 3,942 articles collected from the databases of Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) in the Web of Science (WoS) along with their references were used for analyses. The bibliometric software HistCiteTM and literature measurement visualization tools, VOSviewer and CiteSpace, were employed to analyze the selected articles.

Findings

The results of the study demonstrated top influential scholars and institutions, intellectual structure and emerging trends of the study topics, and future research opportunities in the field of hospitality and tourism marketing.

Research limitations/implications

First, academic influence of a scholar was evaluated by citations of his/her publications, which did not take the order of authorship into consideration. Second, this study was restricted to the English language journals. Third, other types of published documents related to the studied field such as review papers were not considered by this research.

Originality/value

In comparison to traditional qualitative analysis such as content analysis, bibliometric analysis is a more objective approach to vividly demonstrate trends and performance of a research field, offers unique insights for its advancement with wider inclusiveness of a larger amount of data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to present a sensorless control method by which high‐resolution rotor position information is estimated and used for phase‐advancing operation of a high‐speed permanent magnet (PM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed sensorless control approach uses hardware to observe the flux vector which is excited by rotor magnets. It can provide the rotor position which is the same as the phase angle of the observed flux vector.

Findings

High‐resolution rotor position signal of the BLDC motor for dynamic phase‐advancing control cannot be directly obtained from the conventional Hall‐effect sensors, or via the traditional back‐EMF‐based sensorless control strategies in which the back‐EMF may be even undetectable at high‐speed. The proposed rotor‐flux‐observer (RFO)‐based sensorless control method overcomes these problems, and meanwhile provides high‐resolution rotor position information for the phase‐advancing purpose.

Originality/value

The RFO‐based sensorless control is traditionally applied to PM brushless ac (BLAC) operations, where the motor voltage vector can be calculated from the inverter switching status. However, this is not readily applicable to a BLDC motor since the voltage of the floating phase cannot be calculated. Moreover, during high‐speed operation, the microprocessor may not be sufficiently fast to calculate the high‐resolution rotor position. Therefore, in this paper, it is proposed to use hardware to observe the rotor‐flux‐vector. The microprocessor only samples the vector's α‐ and β‐components and calculates the phase angle, hence, its burden is low. The proposed method is validated with a 1.8 kW 85,000 rpm BLDC motor system.
