Abstract
Purpose
The objective of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the effect of irregular columnar jointed structure on the permeability and flow characteristics of rock masses.
Design/methodology/approach
An efficient numerical procedure is proposed to investigate the permeability and fluid flow in columnar jointed rock masses (CJRMs), of which the columnar jointed networks are generated by a modified constrained centroid Voronoi algorithm according to the field statistical results. The fractures are represented explicitly by using the lower-dimensional zero thickness elements. And the modeling scheme is validated by a benchmark test for flow in fractured porous media. The effective permeability and representative elementary volume (REV) size of CJRMs are estimated using finite element method (FEM). The influences of joint density and variation coefficient of columnar joint structure on the permeability of the rock mass are discussed.
Findings
The simulation results indicate that the permeability is scale-dependent and tends to be stable with increase of model size. The hydraulic REV size is determined as 3.5 m for CJRMs in the present study. Moreover, the joint density is a dominant factor affecting the permeability of CJRMs. The average permeability of columnar jointed structures increases linearly with the joint density under the same REV size, while the influence from the coefficient of variation can be neglected.
Originality/value
The present paper investigates the REV size of the CJRMs and the effect of joint parameters on the permeability. The proposed method and the results obtained are useful on understanding the hydraulic characteristic of the irregular CJRMs in engineering projects.

Abstract
Purpose
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has now been paid notable attention by a large number of firms. The aim of this paper is to investigate a better way to implement CSR in a socially responsible supply chain with different channel leaderships.
Design/methodology/approach
Started from measuring CSR by purely taking consumer surplus into account, a stylized centralized channel and two different decentralized channels are first developed and examined for equilibria in the socially responsible chain. Furthermore, this paper extends to a socially irresponsible supply chain and a broader practice of CSR by simultaneously incorporating environmental externality and consumer surplus into CSR.
Findings
With the analytical studies, several interesting and important results and managerial insights are clearly revealed. For example, but not limited to, it is found that: (1) Compared with the leader, the follower can effectively implement CSR for a better performance in both pure and socially responsible profits in the decentralized channel; (2) undertaking socially responsible concerns does not always mean reducing the economic profit and conversely being socially irresponsible does not always induce an increase in economic profit for the socially responsible member(s); (3) CSR concern level plays a key role in both the pure and socially responsible profit. An increase in CSR concern level clearly increases the socially responsible profit and poses an ambiguous impact on pure profit depending on different channel leaderships: it decreases the centralized channel in pure profit but increases the pure profit with the decentralized channel under certain conditions; and (4) interestingly, the authors find that decentralization can outperform centralization regarding on both pure and socially responsible channel profits by properly implementing CSR concern levels.
Practical implications
The results derived in this paper provide novel managerial implications to the socially responsible members in terms of pricing decisions, order quantity and CSR practice. In addition, this paper assists the socially responsible supply chain in determining the optimal channel leadership to undertake CSR. That is, decentralization may achieve a better performance than integration under certain market conditions.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first attempt to explore the interactive of the CSR practice and channel leadership in a socially responsible supply chain.

Abstract
Purpose
Tip leakage vortex flow (TLV) is a common flow phenomenon in the axial-flow hydraulic machinery. High-efficiency simulation of TLV is still not an easy task because of the complex turbulent vortex-cavitation interactions. As an important basis of CFD, turbulence model directly affects the efficient computation of TLV. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the newly developed MST turbulence model in predicting the TLV flows.
Design/methodology/approach
By using the MST turbulence model and the ZGB cavitation model, numerical simulations of the TLV generated by a NACA0009 hydrofoil were performed under the cavitation-free and cavitation conditions, and the results were compared with the available experimental data.
Findings
The important features of TLV are well captured by the MST-based simulation scheme, and the problem of under-predicting the cavitating TLV tube is well solved. Turbulent viscosity is reasonably adjusted in the TLV core regions, and the LES-like mode is activated, which is beneficial to obtain more turbulent information on the same URANS grids. The requirements of grid size and time step of the MST model are much lower than that of the LES method, thereby weighing a good balance between the simulation accuracy and computation cost.
Originality/value
The MST turbulence model is suitable for the high-efficiency simulation of the TLV flows, which can lay a good foundation for efficient engineering computations of the cavitating TLV in the axial-flow hydraulic machinery.

Abstract
Purpose
Political factors play a crucial role in China's initial public offering (IPO) market due to its distinctive institutional context (i.e. “economic decentralization” and “political centralization”). Given the significant level of IPO underpricing in China, we examine the impact of local political uncertainty (measured by prefecture-level city official turnover rate) on IPO underpricing.
Design/methodology/approach
Using 2,259 IPOs of A-share listed companies from 2001 to 2019, we employ a structural equation model (SEM) to examine the channel (voluntarily lower the issuance price vs aftermarket trading) through which political uncertainty affects IPO underpricing. We check the robustness of the results using bootstrap tests, adopting alternative proxies for political uncertainty and IPO underpricing and employing subsample analysis.
Findings
Local official turnover-induced political uncertainty increases IPO underpricing by IPO firms voluntarily reducing the issuance price rather than by affecting investor sentiment in aftermarket trading. These relations are stronger in firms with pre-IPO political connections. The effect of political uncertainty on IPO underpricing is also contingent upon the industry and the growth phase of an IPO firm, more pronounced in politically sensitive industries and firms listed on the growth enterprise market board.
Originality/value
Local government officials in China usually have a short tenure and Chinese firms witness significantly severe IPO underpricing. By introducing the SEM model in studying China IPO underpricing, this study identifies the channel through which local government official turnover to political uncertainty on IPO underpricing.
