Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of a non-contact full-field optical measurement technique known as digital image correlation (DIC).

Design/methodology/approach

The approach of this review paper is to introduce the research pertaining to DIC. It comprehensively covers crucial facets including its principles, historical development, core challenges, current research status and practical applications. Additionally, it delves into unresolved issues and outlines future research objectives.

Findings

The findings of this review encompass essential aspects of DIC, including core issues like the subpixel registration algorithm, camera calibration, measurement of surface deformation in 3D complex structures and applications in ultra-high-temperature settings. Additionally, the review presents the prevailing strategies for addressing these challenges, the most recent advancements in DIC applications across quasi-static, dynamic, ultra-high-temperature, large-scale and micro-scale engineering domains, along with key directions for future research endeavors.

Originality/value

This review holds a substantial value as it furnishes a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to DIC, while also spotlighting its prospective applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a sensor for fast, sensitive and selective ethylene (C2H4) concentration measurements.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper developed a sensor platform based on tunable laser absorption spectroscopy with a 3,266-nm interband cascade laser (ICL) as an optical source and a hollow waveguide (HWG) as a gas cell. The ICL wavelength was scanned across a C2H4 strong fundamental absorption band, and an interference-free C2H4 absorption line located at 3,060.76 cm−1 was selected. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy with the second harmonic detection (WMS-2f) technique was used to improve the sensitivity. Furthermore, the HWG gas cell can achieve a long optical path in a very small volume to improve the time response.

Findings

The results show excellent linearity of the measured 2f signal and the C2H4 concentration with a correlation coefficient of 0.9997. Also, the response time is as short as about 10 s. The Allan variance analysis indicates that the detection limit can achieve 53 ppb with an integration time of 24 s.

Practical implications

The ethylene sensor has many meaningful applications in environmental monitoring, industrial production, national security and the biomedicine field.

Originality/value

The paper provides a novel sensor architecture which can be a versatile sensor platform for fast and sensitive trace-gas detection in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a multiscale computational method for structural failure analysis with inheriting simulation of moving trans-scale boundary (MTB). This method is motivated from the error in domain bridging caused by cross-scale damage evolution, which is common in structural failure induced by damage accumulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Within the method, vulnerable regions with high stress level are described by continuum damage mechanics, while elastic structural theory is sufficient for the rest, dividing the structural model into two scale domains. The two domains are bridged to generate mixed dimensional finite element equation of the whole system. Inheriting simulation is developed to make the computation of MTB sustainable.

Findings

Numerical tests of a notched three-point bending beam and a steel frame show that this MTB method can improve efficiency and ensure accuracy while capturing the effect of material damage on deterioration of components and structure.

Originality/value

The proposed MTB method with inheriting simulation is an extension of multiscale simulation to structural failure analysis. Most importantly, it can deal with cross-scale damage evolution and improve computation efficiency significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in archival practice by presenting the thoughts and opinions of working archival practitioners. It contributes to the extant literature with a fresh perspective, expanding the discussion on AI adoption by investigating how it influences the perceptions of digital archival expertise.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study a two-phase data collection consisting of four online focus groups was held to gather the opinions of international archives and digital preservation professionals (n = 16), that participated on a volunteer basis. The qualitative analysis of the transcripts was performed using template analysis, a style of thematic analysis.

Findings

Four main themes were identified: fitting AI into day to day practice; the responsible use of (AI) technology; managing expectations (about AI adoption) and bias associated with the use of AI. The analysis suggests that AI adoption combined with hindsight about digitisation as a disruptive technology might provide archival practitioners with a framework for re-defining, advocating and outlining digital archival expertise.

Research limitations/implications

The volunteer basis of this study meant that the sample was not representative or generalisable.

Originality/value

Although the results of this research are not generalisable, they shed light on the challenges prospected by the implementation of AI in the archives and for the digital curation professionals dealing with this change. The evolution of the characterisation of digital archival expertise is a topic reserved for future research.
