Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to design a new full‐body tactile sensor which is essential for the application of personal service robot similar to human skin.
Design/methodology/approach
The largest difficulty for designing a full‐body tactile sensor is the huge number of output connections. The sensor introduced in this paper is a special multi‐layer structure, which could minimize the output connections while sensing both the position and force information. Since it is made of conductive and non‐conductive textiles, the sensor could be used to cover the curved surface of robot body.
Findings
With better structure design, output connectors and signal measurement times could be dramatically reduced.
Research limitations/implications
Sensor area and performance are limited by the sensitivity of the measurement circuits.
Originality/value
Introduces an innovate design of full‐body tactile sensor.

Abstract
The inspection and maintenance of small pipes with diameter of 1 in. or below are important tasks given the crucial role of these pipes in various applications, including power plants, nuclear facilities, and underwater systems. Miniature pipe robots (MPRs) are moving vehicles that could take the inspection sensors to the required place inside the pipelines. In this paper, the state‐of‐the‐art researches on MPRs are reviewed. Important design considerations are presented while introducing existing successful designs. The future work of MPRs is also outlined.

Abstract
The ANSI/RIA R15.05‐1‐1990 is an American national industrial robotics standard that covers methods for evaluating the point‐to‐point and static performance of industrial robots. This standard introduces many important concepts for carrying out performance tests. These concepts include standard test plane, standard test path, and working space center point. Eight mistakes and two conflict definitions related to working space center point have been identified and corrected in this paper. Most of the mistakes are definition mistakes related to the base coordinate system, working space center point, standard reference plane, and standard test plane. Mistakes also result from the confusion between the reference plane and the test plane.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the mechanism of branch pits and tunnels formation and increase the specific surface area and capacitance of anode Al foil for high voltage electrolytic capacitor by D.C. etching in acidic solution and neutral.
Design/methodology/approach
Al foil was first D.C. etched in HCl-H2SO4 mixed acidic solution to form main tunnels perpendicular to the Al surface, and then D.C. etched in neutral NaCl solution including 0.5 per cent C6H8O7 and Cu(NO3)2 with different concentration to form branch tunnels normal to Al surface. Between two etching, Cu nuclei were electroless deposited on the interior surface of main tunnels by natural occluded corrosion cell effect to form micro Cu-Al galvanic local cells. The effects of electroless deposited Cu nuclei on cross-section etching morphologies and electrochemical behavior of Al foil was investigated with SEM, polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
Findings
The results show that sub branch tunnels can form along the main tunnels owing to the formation of Cu-Al micro-batteries, in which Cu is cathode and Al is anode. With increase in Cu(NO3)2 concentration, more Cu nuclei can be electroless deposited and serve as the favorable sites for branch tunnel initiation along the whole length of main tunnels, leading to enhancement in specific capacitance of anode Al foil.
Originality/value
Cu nuclei were electroless deposited on the interior surface of main tunnels by natural occluded corrosion cell effect to form micro Cu-Al galvanic local cells, which can serve as the favorable sites for branch tunnel initiation along the main tunnels to enhance specific capacitance of anode Al foil.

The purpose of this paper is to find out the anti‐smoking counselling frequency and its correlates in a sample of Chinese physicians.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to find out the anti‐smoking counselling frequency and its correlates in a sample of Chinese physicians.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, 268 physicians in Baoding, a city near Beijing, filled out a questionnaire asking about their own smoking status, their anti‐smoking behaviors as well as their opinions on how to reduce cigarette smoking in China.
Findings
The paper finds that 54 percent of the male and 8.4 percent of the female physicians were current cigarette smokers. When asked whether they had counselled their patients about cigarette smoking in the past year, 43.7 percent answered “always”; 38.1 percent “often”; 13.1 percent “sometimes”; 2.6 percent “occasionally”, and 2.6 percent said: “not much”. However, only 9.0 percent said that they were “very successful”. Physicians' anti‐smoking counselling practices were highly correlated with their own smoking status; whether they perceived their past anti‐smoking activities as successful; whether they thought that they should set examples by not smoking; whether they felt that they had the responsibility to help patients and whether they perceived themselves as influential in persuading patients to quit smoking.
Practical implications
The paper shows that messages aimed at increasing Chinese physicians' anti‐smoking counselling should appeal to their responsibility, exemplary role, and unique influence on patients' health‐related behaviors.
Originality/value
The paper adds to the few studies on Chinese physicians' cigarette smoking behavior and their anti‐smoking activities. In a country where cigarette smoking is a way of life among males, and few people are aware of the health consequences of cigarette smoking, physicians' efforts can be a spearhead to a cessation campaign.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to give a comprehensive survey on the physics-based virtual assembly (PBVA) technology in a novel perspective, to analyze current drawbacks and propose several promising future directions.
Design/methodology/approach
To provide a deep insight of PBVA, a discussion of the developing context of PBVA and a comparison against constraint-based virtual assembly (CBVA) is put forward. The core elements and general structure are analyzed based on typical PBVA systems. Some common key issues as well as common drawbacks are discussed, based on which the research trend and several promising future directions are proposed.
Findings
Special attention is paid to new research progresses and new ideas concerning recent development as well as new typical systems of the technology. Advantages of PBVA over CBVA are investigated. Based on the analysis of typical PBVA systems and the evolution of PBVA, the core elements of the technology and the general structure of its implementation are identified. Then, current PBVA systems are summarized and classified. After that, key issues in the technology and current drawbacks are explored in detail. Finally, promising future directions are given, including both the further perfecting of the technology and the combination with other technologies.
Originality/value
The PBVA technology is put into a detailed review and analysis in a novel way, providing a better insight of both the theory and the implementation of the technology.

The purpose of this paper is to explore an under-researched topic of supply chain followership (SCF) in the context of recycling chains.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore an under-researched topic of supply chain followership (SCF) in the context of recycling chains.
Design/methodology/approach
Following a multiple case study approach, the authors conducted interviews with Tetra Pak senior managers and recyclers who recycle used beverage cartons (UBCs) in China.
Findings
Based on the dimensions of critical thinking and active engagement, the authors classify SCF into four types. Focal companies could evaluate their suppliers’ behaviours and followership types to initiate corresponding strategies to better manage their relationships. In addition, the authors found SCF to be a dynamic concept, which can be constantly evaluated.
Originality/value
This study is one of the earliest efforts to empirically explore the concept of SCF. The paper extends the followership concept from an individual level to an organizational level in the recycling chain context and presents a useful concept of followership for companies seeking to manage their supply chain relationships.
