Abstract
Purpose
The paper is devoted to presenting a systematic investigation on the mechanical model and nonlinear dynamic characteristics of spur gear system with and without input shaft crack.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the backlash, load-distribution, time-varying meshing stiffness and sliding friction, the modelling of a 5DOF gear system is proposed. Likewise, stiffness and damping models under elastohydrodynamic lubrication are developed, and sliding friction between gear pair is also outlined. In particular, a cracked input shaft which affects the support stiffness is presented, and breathing crack in keyway is adopted. On this basis, the dynamic responses of a gear system with and without input shaft crack are examined using numerical method, and some classical response diagrams are given, illustrating the effect of the important parameters on the gear system.
Findings
Dynamic simulation demonstrates that there exist periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motions in the gear system, and rational speed of the gear pair has noteworthy effects on vibration characteristic. Besides, comparison between healthy and cracked condition of input shaft indicates that occurring of crack convert periodic motion to quasi-periodic or chaotic motion.
Originality/value
The results give an understanding of the operating conditions under which undesirable dynamic behavior occurs, and provide some useful information to design and diagnose such gear system with crack fault.

Abstract
Purpose
The serious wear problem of heavy-haul freight vehicle wheels affects the safety and economy of vehicle operation. This paper aims to study wheel wear evolution law and the influence of line parameters on wheel wear of heavy-haul freight, and provide the basis for operation and line maintenance.
Design/methodology/approach
The wheel wear test data of heavy-haul freight vehicles were analyzed. Then a heavy-haul freight vehicle dynamic model was established. The line parameters influencing wheel wear in heavy-haul freight vehicles were also analyzed by the Jendel wear model, and the effects of rail cant, rail gauge, rail profile and line ramp on wheel wear were analyzed.
Findings
A rail cant of 1:40 results in less wheel wear; an increase in the rail gauge can reduce wheel wear; and when matched with the CHN60 rail, the wear depth is relatively small. A decrease of 9.21% in wheel wear depth when matched with the CHN60 rail profile. The ramp of the heavy-haul line is necessary to consider for calculating wheel wear. When the ramp is considered, the wear depth increases by 8.47%. The larger the ramp, the greater the braking force and therefore, the greater of the wheel wear.
Originality/value
This paper first summarizes the wear characteristics of wheels in heavy-haul freight vehicles and then systematically analyzes the effect of line parameters on wheel wear. In particular, this study researched the effects of rail cant, rail gauge, rail profile and line ramp on wheel wear.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the non-linear characteristics and stability of the rolling bearing–axle coupling system under the excitation of the axle/wheel speed of railway freight cars, so as to put forward a rationale for judging the vibration law and running stability of railway freight wagon.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the effects of eccentric force of the railway wagon axle, the non-linear resistance of the wagon and non-linear support forces of axle box rolling bearings, a centralized mass model of rolling bearing-axle coupling system of railway freight wagon is presented on the basis of the theory of rotor dynamics and non-linear dynamics. Then the Runge-Kutta method is adopted to solve the non-linear response of the proposed system, and numerical simulation including bifurcation diagrams, axis trajectory curves, phase plane plots, Poincaré sections and amplitude spectras are analysed when the axle rotating speed is changed. Meantime, the relation curve between Floquet multiplier and axle rotating speed, which affects the stability of coupling system, is plotted by numerical method based on the Floquet theory and method.
Findings
The simulation results of the dynamic model reveal the abundant dynamic behaviour of the coupling system when the axle rotating speed changes, including single period, quasi period, multi-period and chaotic motion, as well as the evolution law from multi-period motion to chaotic motion. And especially, the bearing–axle coupling system is in stable state with a single period motion when the axle rotating speed changes from 410 rpm to 510 rpm, in which the running speed of railway freight wagon is changed from 62 km/h to 80 km/h, the vibration displacement of the coupling system in X direction is between 1.2 mm and 1.8 mm, and the vibration displacement of the coupling system in Y direction is between 1.0 mm and 1.45 mm. Meanwhile, the influence law of axle rotating speed on the stability is obtained by comparing the bifurcation diagram and Floquet multiplier graph of the coupling system.
Originality/value
The numerical simulation data obtained in this study can provide a theoretical evidence for designing the running speed of railway freight wagon, utilizing or controlling the non-linear dynamic behaviours of the proposed coupling system, and ensuring the stability of railway freight wagons.

Purpose
This study aims to propose a cooperative adhesion control method for trains with multiple motors electric locomotives. The method is intended to optimize the output torque of each motor, maximize the utilization of train adhesion within the total torque command, reduce the train skidding/sliding phenomenon and achieve optimal adhesion utilization for each axle, thus realizing the optimal allocation of the multi-motor electric locomotives.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, a model predictive control (MPC)-based cooperative maximum adhesion tracking control method for multi-motor electric locomotives is presented. Firstly, train traction system with multiple motors is constructed in accordance with Newton’s second law. These equations include the train dynamics equations, the axle dynamics equations, and the wheel-rail adhesion coefficient equations. Then, a new MPC-based multi-axle adhesion co-optimization method is put forward. This method calculates the optimal output torque through real-time iteration based on the known reference slip speed to achieve multi-axle co-optimization under different circumstances.
Findings
This paper presents a MPC system designed for the cooperative control of multi-axle adhesion. The results indicate that the proposed control system is able to optimize the adhesion of multiple axles under numerous different conditions and achieve the optimal power distribution based on the reduction of train skidding/sliding.
Originality/value
This study presents a novel cooperative adhesion tracking control scheme. It is designed for multi-motor electric locomotives, which has rarely been studied before. And simulations are carried out in different conditions, including variable surfaces and motor failing.

Purpose
Economic fundamentals are recognized as determining factors for housing on the city level, but the relationship between housing price and land supply has been disputed. This study aims to examine what kind of impact housing prices have on land supply and whether there is heterogeneity in different regional spaces.
Design/methodology/approach
This study collects the relevant data of land supply and housing prices in Nanchang from 2010 to 2018, constructs a vector autoregression (VAR) model, including one external factor and four internal factors of land supply to explore the dynamic effects and spatial heterogeneity of land supply on housing prices through regression analysis. Also, the authors use the geographic detector to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of housing prices in Nanchang.
Findings
This study found that the interaction between land supply and housing price is extremely complex because of the significant differences in the study area; the variables of land supply have both positive and negative effects on housing price, and the actual effect varies with the region; and residential land and GDP are the two major factors leading to the spatial heterogeneity in housing price.
Research limitations/implications
The dynamic effects of land supply on housing price are mainly reflected in the center and edge of the city, the new development area, and the old town, which is consistent with the spatial pattern of the double core, three circles and five groups in Nanchang.
Originality/value
This is a novel work to analyze the dynamic effects of land supply on house prices, instead of a single amount of land supply or land prices. Furthermore, the authors also explore the spatial heterogeneity according to the regional characteristics, which is conducive to targeted policymaking.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to use fully convolutional network (FCN) to predict pixel-wise antipodal grasp affordances for unknown objects and improve the grasp detection performance through multi-scale feature fusion.
Design/methodology/approach
A modified FCN network is used as the backbone to extract pixel-wise features from the input image, which are further fused with multi-scale context information gathered by a three-level pyramid pooling module to make more robust predictions. Based on the proposed unify feature embedding framework, two head networks are designed to implement different grasp rotation prediction strategies (regression and classification), and their performances are evaluated and compared with a defined point metric. The regression network is further extended to predict the grasp rectangles for comparisons with previous methods and real-world robotic grasping of unknown objects.
Findings
The ablation study of the pyramid pooling module shows that the multi-scale information fusion significantly improves the model performance. The regression approach outperforms the classification approach based on same feature embedding framework on two data sets. The regression network achieves a state-of-the-art accuracy (up to 98.9%) and speed (4 ms per image) and high success rate (97% for household objects, 94.4% for adversarial objects and 95.3% for objects in clutter) in the unknown object grasping experiment.
Originality/value
A novel pixel-wise grasp affordance prediction network based on multi-scale feature fusion is proposed to improve the grasp detection performance. Two prediction approaches are formulated and compared based on the proposed framework. The proposed method achieves excellent performances on three benchmark data sets and real-world robotic grasping experiment.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a double-stator switched reluctance machine (DS-SRM) for electric vehicles (EVs) and to propose multi-mode operations for this machine.
Design/methodology/approach
Analysis of flux linkage distributions and torque characteristics using finite element method (FEM). Building a dynamic simulation model based on electromagnetic characteristics, mathematical equations and mechanical motion equations of the DS-SRM drive system. The paper proposes multi-mode operations (inner-stator excitation mode, outer-stator excitation mode and double-stator excitation mode) based on motor working regions. It also conducts simulation and experimental results to verify the effectiveness of the proposed multi-mode operations strategies and control schemes.
Findings
There is almost no electromagnetic coupling between the inner and outer stators due to the specially designed rotor structure and optimized windings polarity configuration. Analysis of flux linkage distributions and torque characteristics verified the independence of inner and outer stators. Proposal of multi-mode operations and corresponding control rules achieved the smooth switching between different modes.
Originality/value
The paper introduced the DS-SRM for EVs and proposed multi-mode operations, along with control rules, to optimize its performance. The specially designed rotor structure, optimized winding polarity configuration, and the proposed multi-mode operations contribute to the originality of the research.

Purpose
Achieving sustainability and sustainable performance has emerged as a critical area of focus for both academic research and practice. However, this pursuit faces challenges, particularly concerning the inadequacy of supply chain information. To address this issue, our study employs the organizational information processing theory to explore how adopting blockchain technology enables firms to learn from and collaborate with their supply chain partners, ultimately facilitating their sustainable performance even in the presence of organizational inertia.
Design/methodology/approach
Underpinned by the organizational information processing theory and drawing data from 220 manufacturing firms in China, we use structural equation modeling to test our conceptual model.
Findings
Our results demonstrate that blockchain technology adoption can significantly enhance sustainable performance. Furthermore, supply chain learning acts as a mediator between blockchain technology adoption and sustainable performance, while organizational inertia plays a negative moderating role between blockchain technology adoption and supply chain learning.
Originality/value
These findings extend the existing literature on blockchain technology adoption and supply chain management, offering novel insights into the pivotal role of blockchain in fostering supply chain learning and achieving sustainable performance. Our study provides valuable practical implications for managers seeking to leverage blockchain technology to enhance sustainability and facilitate organizational learning.

Purpose
With the analysis of the causes of corruption, this study aims to investigate specific anti-corruption measures that can be implemented to reform the political system and the social climate of China.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examines 97 severe corruption cases of high-ranking officials in China, which occurred between 2012 and 2015. As this insinuates that both institutional and social corruption are major problems in China, the analysis delves into multiple facts of corruption, including different types, four primary underlying causes, and suggestions regarding the implementation of three significant governmental shifts that focus on investigation, prevention tactics and legal regulations.
Findings
China’s corruption is not only individual-based but also it has developed into institutional corruption and social corruption. Besides human nature and instinct, the causes of corruption can be organised into four categories, namely, social customs, social transitions, institutional designs and institutional operations. For the removed high-ranking officials, the formation of interest chains was an important underlying cause behind their corruption.
Originality/value
This study makes a significant contribution to the literature because this study provides a well-rounded approach to a complex issue by highlighting the significance of democracy and the rule of law as ways to regulate human behaviour to combat future corruption.

Purpose
Taking urban-rural disparity into account, this research examines the current service provision of preschool education at the local level in China.
Design/methodology/approach
Following a qualitative design, the research is based on a case study on the preschool service provision in Luochuan County in China, with data collected from semi-structured interviews with grassroots officials and residents from the county’s rural and urban regions.
Findings
This research finds that preschool services are inefficiently delivered between the county’s rural and urban areas. While services are oversupplied in rural regions, the popular demand for urban kindergartens is inadequately addressed. Moreover, the tuition subsidy offered by the local government has drastically decreased in recent years.
Research limitations/implications
This research is confined to a single-case study, so its findings are not necessarily applicable to all Chinese localities. Nevertheless, it proves that these problems in preschool service provision can be a result of the central authority’s tight control.
Social implications
Given China’s rapid urbanization and fertility decline, this research argues that overinvestment in rural kindergartens can be a widespread phenomenon throughout China. It also suggests a decreasing popular demand for other public services, such as childcare, in Chinese rural regions. This research calls for special attention to the persistent regional discrepancy in preschool service standards and the welfare cuts after the revenue centralization reform.
Originality/value
This research contributes to a clearer picture of the current preschool service delivery by Chinese local governments, which remains largely underexplored by far. It also provides updates on the country’s long-existing urban-rural discrepancy in preschool services.
