Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to present the results of the author's research on the development of the new economy in Poland. It focuses on identifying two types of so‐called “e‐gaps”, and shows the connection between e‐technology and e‐organisational gap.

Design/methodology/approach

The factors determined the e‐gaps have been identified based on the author's past research, and on the review of reports and statistics coming from different sources (net readiness indexes, public institutions, etc.).

Findings

Despite the unfavourable macroeconomic, exogenous conditions which determine the high level of the e‐technological gap in the Polish economy, Polish enterprises display a relatively lower level of the e‐organisational gap. One of the methods of limiting the scope of the e‐technological gap in economy seems to lie in initiating macroeconomic activities aimed at reducing the setback of particular enterprises and – consequently – facilitating the increase of economic competitiveness, taken as a whole.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are based on the net readiness research made in Poland, and to see the international sight of e‐gaps, the international net readiness research are needed.

Practical implications

This paper makes possible to prepare a diagnosis of now‐a‐days net readiness development in Poland and indicates the most needed areas of activity of polish government and polish CEO's.

Originality/value

The research may be used by other countries not as well developed in the e‐business area as international leaders in order to know and to decrease the level of their e‐gaps.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper focuses on identifying key factors which condition the occurrence of synergies in multi‐entity companies in relation to the application of knowledge management procedures in the marketing and development function.

Design/methodology/approach

The factors have been identified as selected knowledge management subsystems and subsequently validated empirically in the groups of companies under review. The questionnaire used as a research tool included 27 questions on the organisation of the key management processes in the area of marketing and development in terms of knowledge management. The research results are described by means of the correlation and median analysis.

Findings

Our observations and research findings appear to support a claim that the management of a multiple organisation that allows identification, selection, organisation, dissemination, and transfer of important information between group members is a crucial determinant of synergies and financial performance of a group of companies.

Originality/value

The enterprises in the former Comecon countries had a relatively little time to make important changes in the organisation and management, to improve their effectiveness and competitiveness. In the Polish economic realities, as the privatisation and restructuring processes of the former state‐owned enterprises got under way, one of the ways in which businesses sought to improve performance was to establish groups of companies. We described the hidden effects of this process, which primary was not included to the direct goals of the group establishing process. However, is one of the most important effects of this activity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a supplier risk framework. The framework provides the information about the risk level in which a supplier is classified. This study is part of the company’s one- department-one-improvement policy. This policy encourages all departments to look for way to improve process management. For this study, the Purchasing Department attempts to extend its supplier management practices by integrating the risk consideration.

Design/methodology/approach

This work is considered as a case study. The study integrates the benchmarking and classification concepts for this extension. The involvement from the company’s purchasing department is critical. There are several steps that have been undertaken. Included are the selection of the supplies to be considered (i.e. packaging), the analysis of the formal complaints by the ratio-format indicator, the four criteria used for the classification, the risk level identification, and the next steps for improving supplier management. The results are verified by the use of cluster analysis. The data are from departmental staffs and manager.

Findings

Based on the results, with the four agreed criteria (e.g. regional location, ownership type, joint venture, and registered capital and size), there are altogether four risk levels which are high, medium, low, and minimal.. For the packaging materials, most suppliers belong to the low and minimal risk levels (or 19 out of 27 suppliers). Future activities are then developed and added into the company’s ISO 9001: 2008 manual.

Practical implications

The suppliers’ risk levels with corresponding future actions represent positive contributions to the purchasing department. Integrating supplier risk is based on the applications of benchmarking (i.e. the use of the ratio-format indicators) and classification (i.e. the need to understand the nature of the risk level) frameworks. Future actions to mitigate the risk are also proposed and incorporated into the purchasing department’s procedure.

Originality/value

The project underlines the roles and importance of benchmarking in strengthening the supplier management processes. It also highlights the practicality and benefits of benchmarking when linking with the classification concept for addressing today business problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to identify and systematize the terms of successful acquisitions on the enterprise market, along with making their classification into the necessary (which enable reaching synergy) and additional conditions (increasing the level of synergy or optimizing the process of obtaining it).

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on direct interviews with the CEO, CFO and COOs. The surveys were carried out between the year 2000 and 2010 in a few tens of companies conducting acquisitions. The aim was to answer the question of whether the individual conditions of successful transactions were carried out and what were the results of acquisitions from the perspective of changes in the expected value (or observed) by the buyer. There has also been used the personal experience of the authors as participants in the acquisition on the sides of both, the buyer and the purchased.

Findings

The results allowed us to identify key conditions for success at each stage of the transaction process (critical success factors (CSF)). They also made it possible to classify the terms according to the criterion of their significance. The results clearly show that the cost-effective acquisition processes at the same time require fulfilling a number of conditions. The lack of synergetic effects of these conditions may decide not possible to obtain the expected increase in value in the purchasing process.

Research limitations/implications

The research was conducted in a wide spectrum of companies, regardless of the ongoing activities in the industry, mainly on the Polish market. This means that the findings and recommendations are universally applicable, provided that some of the proposals may relate in particular to the so-called emerging markets.

Practical implications

The practical application of recommendations given in the paper will allow to reduce the risk and abridge the scale of failures in the acquisition processes. The attention is drawn to the practical implications of the pitfalls to which the managers who decide on and carry out complex processes of capital investments may be exposed.

Originality/value

As a result of literature and empirical research as well as the article's authors' own experience as experts, there has been proposed a comprehensive model of the most important behaviors conditioning the success of the acquisition in the context of building the shareholder value. This very model organizes the past experience of the M&A market, classifies the important factors in the M&A processes according to their effect on the value, and it supplements them with new elements, allowing the construction of a sustainable competitive advantage of the organization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors which determine the level of public employees' job satisfaction and as result help to have effective and efficient management system in the public sector, in developing countries such as Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on theoretical considerations, a model was proposed linking the employee satisfaction and loyalty (ESL) constructs. The paper exhibits the findings of a satisfaction and loyalty survey of employment factors within the Turkish public sector. The survey was conducted in 2009 and covered 220 employees within the Istanbul Branch of a Social Security Institution in Turkey. A model was developed by including effecting factors of employee satisfaction, their relations and effects of employee satisfaction on employee loyalty. Partial least squares structural equation model was employed to test the model in the public insurance sector in Turkey.

Findings

Data analysis reveals that there is a strong relationship between ESL in a branch of a public sector Social Security Institution in Turkey. Training and personal development was found the most effecting factor of customer satisfaction. The study also finds a positive relationship between working conditions and satisfaction.

Originality/value

The paper reveals the relationship between the employee satisfaction and affecting factors in the public sector in Turkey. These factors are developed only incidentally in the public sector in Turkey. Human resource management (HRM) applications such as measuring employee satisfaction, performance development are widely used in private sector. Specifically, in developing countries such as Turkey, these applications are rarely used in the public sector. Therefore, the paper advocates the use of HRM applications in the public sector in a developing country.
