Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to systematically demonstrate the use of an effective multiple criteria decision-making technique, i.e. fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) in ranking the decision criteria of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS).

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire is specially designed and served to the industry experts to collect their opinion on several FMS decision criteria. Subsequently, fuzzy TOPSIS is used to prioritize the decision criteria.

Findings

Fuzzy TOPSIS multiple criteria decision-making technique is explained and applied to determine relative importance of the several decision criteria of FMS. This will help management of organizations in taking decision for implementing FMS in their organizations. From this study, it is found that customer satisfaction is the top most criterion among several other criteria for the successful implementation of FMS.

Research limitations/implications

In situation like the one considered in this research, there are dependencies and interactions among the criteria and, therefore, other techniques such as fuzzy analytic network process would have been a better choice. Nevertheless, fuzzy TOPSIS also provides good result as it incorporates vagueness associated with the decision maker’s opinion pertaining to the several FMS decision criteria.

Originality/value

This paper presents a fuzzy TOSIS model to help managers understand the relative importance of the several FMS decision criteria so that they can use this information for successful implementation of this advanced manufacturing technology in their organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the multi-objective optimization of the dynamic response of isotropic and laminated composite folded plates. The dynamic analysis has been carried out using the finite element method based on the first-order shear deformation theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Hamilton’s principle has been employed for the derivation of the governing equations. Natural frequencies are obtained using the eigenvalue extraction method. The optimal combination of the crank angle, lamination scheme and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of folded plates for their safe and optimal dynamic design has been obtained. The analysis has been carried out using finite element approach based on FSDT to obtain the dynamic equation of single- and double-fold laminated plates. In total, 15 experiments as per Taguchi’s standard L15 orthogonal array have been performed. Further, standard deviation (SD) based TOPSIS method is used to perform multi-response optimization of folded plates in order to rank the combination of the input parameters.

Findings

SD integrated with TOPSIS reveals that Experiment No. 8 (crank angle=90° and anti-symmetric lamination scheme=0°/90°/0°/90°), Experiment No. 14 (crank angle=150° and anti-symmetric lamination scheme=0o/90o/0o/90o), Experiment No. 2 (crank angle=30° and anti-symmetric lamination scheme=0°/90°/0°/90°) and Experiment No. 3 (crank angle=30° and symmetric lamination scheme=0°/90°/0°/90°) occupy rank 1 for one fold, one end clamped, one fold, two ends clamped, two folds, one end clamped and two folds, two ends clamped conditions, respectively, in order to maximize the modal response corresponding to the fundamental mode.

Originality/value

SD-based technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method is used to rank the process parameters. The optimum combination of the input parameters on the multi-response optimization of dynamics of the folded plates has also been evaluated using the analysis of mean (ANOM).

Abstract

Purpose

Recent years have witnessed a significant rise in Indian healthcare establishments (HCEs) which indicate that there is a constant need to improve the healthcare quality services through the adoption and implementation of TQM enablers. The purpose of this paper is to identify such enablers and then propose a ranking model for TQM implementation in Indian HCEs for improved performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study identifies 20 TQM enablers through comprehensive literature survey and expert’s opinion, and classifies them into five main categories. The prominence of these enablers is established using a recently developed novel multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method, i.e. best-worst method (BWM). The importance of the various main category and sub-category enablers is decided on the basis of their weights which are determined by the BWM. In comparison to other MCDM methods, such as analytical hierarchy process, BWM requires relatively lesser comparison data and also provides consistent comparisons which results in both optimal and reliable weights of the enablers considered in this paper. Further, a sensitivity analysis is also carried out to ensure that the ranking (based on the optimal weights) of the various enablers is reliable and robust.

Findings

The results of this study reveal that out of five main category enablers, the “leadership-based enablers (E1)” and the “continuous improvement based enablers (E5)” are the most and the least important enablers, respectively. Similarly, among the 20 sub-category enablers, “quality leadership and role of physicians (E14)” and “performing regular survey of customer satisfaction and quality audit (E52)” are the most and the least dominating sub-category enablers, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

This study does not explore the interrelationship between the various TQM enablers and also does not evaluate performance of the various HCEs based on the weights of the enablers.

Practical implications

The priority of the TQM enablers determined in this paper enables decision makers to understand their influence on successful implementation of the TQM principles and policies in HCEs leading to an overall improvement in the system’s performance.

Originality/value

This study identifies the various TQM enablers in HCEs and categorizes them into five main categories and ranks them using the BWM. The findings of this research are quite useful for management of the HCEs to properly understand the relative importance of these enablers so that managers can formulate an effective and efficient strategy for their easy and smooth implementation which is necessary for continuous improvement.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between bank policy-related practices and green financing sustainability in Pakistan. The study uses a mediating-moderation analysis to examine how the influence of bank policies on green financing sustainability is mediated by green banking activities and moderated by the employees’ green value and green knowledge sharing.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a structural questionnaire was used to gather data from Pakistani bank personnel through stratified sampling. A two-stage structural equation modelling approach was used in this investigation. The measuring scale’s validity and reliability are assessed using the measure model. A structural model was used to ascertain the connection between the underpinning constructs.

Findings

This study found a positive significant effect on bank employed related practices on green banking activities, besides the mediate role of green banking activities between the bank policies-related practices and green financing. In addition, this study also found the moderating role of employees’ green value and green knowledge sharing on the relationship of bank policies-related practices and green banking activities as well as green banking activities and green financing, respectively.

Originality/value

As environmental sustainability becomes more and more important on a worldwide scale; the study looks into the ways that financial institutions may become more environmentally conscious and help create a more sustainable future. To shed light on the ways in which financial institutions can be crucial in advancing green sustainability in an emerging economy such as Pakistan, this study used sophisticated statistical tools.

Abstract

Purpose

As the manufacturing activities in today's industries are getting more and more complex, it is required for the manufacturing firm to have a good shop floor production scheduling to plan and schedule their production orders. An accurate scheduling is essential to any manufacturing firm in order to be competitive in global market. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Two types of shop floors, job shop and cellular layout, were developed by using WITNESS simulation package. Consequently, the performance of forward scheduling and backward scheduling in both job shop and cellular layout was compared using simulation method, and the results were analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Through analysis, the best scheduling approach and layout to be used by manufacturing firm in order to achieve the make-to-order (MTO) production and inventory strategy were reported.

Findings

The results from simulation show that backward scheduling in job shop layout has the lowest average throughput time, lowest lateness, and highest labour productivity than forward scheduling. While in cellular layout, forward scheduling has the lowest average throughput time, lowest lateness, and highest labour productivity than backward scheduling in all conditions. It shows that the performance of scheduling approach is different in each production layout.

Originality/value

Suitable scheduling approach is needed in manufacturing industry as to maximize production rate and optimize machine and process capability. This paper presents an empirical study about the assembly process of radio cassette player of one manufacturing industry in order to investigate the impact of variety of orders and different number of two workers on the performance of production scheduling approach. Forward scheduling and backward scheduling are used to schedule the production orders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate application of the Taguchi method‐based conceptual signal‐to‐noise (S/N) approach and Pareto analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine optimum level of three important factors related to mobile phone conversation during driving, namely time of drive (day or night), distance between cars, and mobile phone call duration that minimizes drivers' reaction time (RT) in braking response.

Design/methodology/approach

Three levels of each factor based on the experience, are considered in the present study. The design of experiment, in the form of an L18 orthogonal array, as proposed by Genichi Taguchi is used to conduct 18 experiments. A total of 27 young male subjects participated in the experimental study. The experimental task involved pressing the brake pedal of the car by the driver upon seeing another car in front while the driver is talking on a mobile phone. Drivers' performance, measured in terms of RT in braking response, is recorded. Conceptual S/N ratio and Pareto ANOVA are employed to investigate the drivers' performance.

Findings

Results show that within the test range, drivers' performance, i.e. RT in braking response is optimum (minimum) when they performed the driving task at day time, distance between cars is long (20 meters), and mobile phone call duration is short (30 seconds). Mobile call duration is found to be the dominant parameter with a percentage contribution ratio of 41.882 percent towards the laid down objective followed by time of driving, 32.003 percent and distance between cars, 1.353 percent.

Practical implications

This paper provides valuable information to the drivers with respect to the use of optimum level of these factors in order to minimize their RT in braking response.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, no study has been conducted in the past to investigate the effect of these factors on the performance of drivers when they use mobile phones for conversation during driving. In addition, no attempt has yet been made to find the optimal level of these factors from drivers' performance in braking response view point. This paper is an original research work of authors and in the opinion it carries significantly important values as it provides new information to the persons who talk on mobile phones during driving.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate application of the Taguchi method to determine the optimum level of three important parameters (factors) related to the use of a mobile phone for the text message entering task, namely illumination level, noise level and mobile angle that maximizes the performance of mobile phone users.

Design/methodology/approach

Three levels of each parameter as available in the literature, except for the mobile angle, were considered. The design of the experiment, as proposed by Genichi Taguchi, was used to conduct nine experiments. A total of 30 male subjects participated in the experimental study. The text message entry task, in the form of Arabic text, was presented to the participating subjects and their performance, measured in terms of mean number of characters entered per minute, was recorded. The signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratio and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to investigate the users' performance. Finally, a confirmation test was conducted to verify the validity of the results.

Findings

Results showed that, at the illumination level of 475 lux, noise level of 45 dB(A), and mobile angle of 70 degrees, the subjects were quite comfortable, efficient and entered the maximum number of characters in the mobile phone per minute. The noise was found to be the dominant parameter with a contribution of 95.53 percent towards the laid down objective followed by mobile angle, 3.25 percent and illumination level, 0.66 percent.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge no study has been conducted in the past to investigate the effect of these parameters on the performance of the mobile phone users. In addition, no attempt has yet been made to find the optimal level of these parameters from a text‐entering viewpoint. The paper represents original research and in the authors' opinion carries significantly important values as it provides new information for those involved in the design of the mobile phone environment.

By market capitalisation, Bitcoin, which debuted in 2009, is the biggest cryptocurrency globally. A decentralised ledger system called blockchain is used in the creation, distribution, trading, and storage of Bitcoin, with the original goal being to address the shortcomings of fiat currency. This chapter highlights potential dangers and legal concerns when Bitcoin interacts with the actual economy and the traditional financial system. Besides, the details also discuss the platform’s design principles and attributes for a non-technical readership. When assessing its transactional potential, some recognise its potential for speculation, while others are doubtful of its admirable intent. The write-up also explores the potential of the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Southeast Asia due to the vast adoption of Bitcoins in countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines following the establishment of cryptocurrency technology and e-commerce. In addition, rankings of the cryptocurrency and legal stance from each country in Southeast Asia were exhibited as the solid foundation of cryptocurrencies existent for transaction purposes. The rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and the future directions of Bitcoins were also highlighted in this write-up to spur the debate on whether cryptocurrency remains a fad of sensation or is legalised as the medium of exchange in an ever-growing digital world of commerce.

Abstract

Purpose

To introduce a research carried out in a real world for implementing a dust control system (DCS) for controlling the indoor air quality (IAP) on the production floor of one of the major electronics company in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is arranged as follows, a brief description of the significant of DCS in electronic industry and brief introduction to the electronic company as a case study company for introducing the DCS. The discussion on the characteristics management and planning tools (MPTs) that have been adopted as the analysing tools for assisting in the decision‐making process in identifying the problems and improvement strategies. It follows by the detail analysis phase regarding the implementation process that it as backbone for introducing the DCS. Finally a discussion about the result obtained from the MPT analysis on the techniques for identifying the root causes of the dust pollution problem as well as the best improvement strategies that can be adopted by the case study company.

Findings

Three analysis techniques from MPT have been used; there are relation diagram, tree diagram and prioritization matrices analyses. These techniques are very powerful for analysing the specific problem using verbal data. The outputs (results) from these techniques have been used as the solutions to the dust pollution problem. As a result, the implementations of DCS successfully reduce the dust level and stabilise the dust distribution on the production floor.

Practical implications

This paper offer a systematic way in identifying and controlling the IAP in industry.

Originality/value

This paper introduces very useful methods in decision making for identifying the solutions for environmental problem and implementation of DCS in a real world environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically explore the influence of managerial ability on crash risk and the moderating effect of financial constraints on this interrelationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of listed corporations in the Egyptian Stock Exchange during 2018–2021, the authors test the hypotheses by using the measures and methods well established in prior literature. The authors also conduct multiple robustness analyses to ensure the validity of the empirical results.

Findings

The findings suggest that managerial ability can effectively inhibit crash risk. In addition, the authors report that financial constraints significantly dampen this relationship. Thus, financial restrictions play a striking role in hampering the managerial ability to prevent stock crashes. Furthermore, the authors document that the moderating role of severe financing constraints is more prominent during the Covid-19 pandemic period.

Originality/value

The originality of this study stems from the following considerations. First, this study enriches relevant studies on crash risk by providing evidence from one of the emerging markets in the Middle East; thereby, contrasting with those in developed economies. Second, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study investigating the moderating impact of financing constraints on the managerial ability and crash risk nexus. Therefore, this work adds value to the extant knowledge by scrutinizing this important issue and providing novel empirical evidence.
