Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to focus on the design of automated fabric defect detection based on cascaded low-rank decomposition and to maintain high quality control in textile manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposed a fabric defect detection algorithm based on cascaded low-rank decomposition. First, the constructed Gabor feature matrix is divided into a low-rank matrix and sparse matrix using low-rank decomposition technique, and the sparse matrix is used as priori matrix where higher values indicate a higher probability of abnormality. Second, we conducted the second low-rank decomposition for the constructed texton feature matrix under the guidance of the priori matrix. Finally, an improved adaptive threshold segmentation algorithm was adopted to segment the saliency map generated by the final sparse matrix to locate the defect regions.
Findings
The proposed method was evaluated on the public fabric image databases. By comparing with the ground-truth, the average detection rate of 98.26% was obtained and is superior to the state-of-the-art.
Originality/value
The cascaded low-rank decomposition was first proposed and applied into the fabric defect detection. The quantitative value shows the effectiveness of the detection method. Hence, the proposed method can be used for accurate defect detection and automated analysis system.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate consumers’ responses to unsolicited cross-selling of supplementary paid-for services made during delivery of a core service, and the contextual and personal variables moderating those responses.
Design/methodology/approach
Three formal experiments test the effect on participants’ responses of the perceived relevance of the supplementary service to the core service, personal psychological reactance, in the case of a high-relevance supplementary service, and self-monitoring, in scenarios in which a low-relevance supplementary service is proposed either in public or privately.
Findings
The experiments found that participants’ satisfaction ratings were reduced in response to cross-selling of a supplementary service that was of low relevance to the core service, and that satisfaction ratings if it was perceived to be of high relevance compared were not reduced despite the unsolicited attempt at cross-selling. However, the non-negative response to a high-relevance offer was limited to participants with a lower tendency to reactance. Furthermore, a high predisposition to self-monitoring evoked more positive judgments if a low-relevance supplementary service was proposed in public rather than privately. That of low self-monitors was no different in either case.
Originality/value
This paper examines the trade-off faced by a service provider between customer satisfaction and extra revenue from supplementary services, and explores conditions under which a provider can propose unsolicited supplementary services without offending customers.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to adopt a three-stage cloud-based management system for optimizing greenhouse gases (GHG) emission and marketing decisions with supplier selection and product family design in a multi-level supply chain with multiple suppliers, one single manufacturer and multiple retailers.
Design/methodology/approach
The manufacturer purchases optional components of a certain functionality from his alternative suppliers and customizes a set of platform products for retailers in different independent market segments. To tackle the studied problem, a hierarchical analytical target cascading (ATC) model is proposed, Jaya algorithm is applied and supplier selection and product family design are implemented in its encoding procedure.
Findings
A case study is used to verify the effectiveness of the ATC model in solving the optimization problem and the corresponding algorithm. It has shown that the ATC model can not only obtain close optimization results as a central optimization method but also maintain the autonomous decision rights of different supply chain members.
Originality/value
This paper first develops a three-stage cloud-based management system to optimize GHG emission, marketing decisions, supplier selection and product family design in a multi-level supply chain. Then, the ATC model is proposed to obtain the close optimization results as central optimization method and also maintain the autonomous decision rights of different supply chain members.

Purpose
The aim of this paper was to investigate word-of-mouth communication behavior and other interactions between bloggers writing book testimonials and their community of readers in order to develop a method and strategy for enhancing word-of-mouth communication about books.
Design/methodology/approach
This study conducted a netnographic investigation to explore word-of-mouth communication and interactions about new books between bloggers and their community of readers. Netnography is a qualitative approach for exploring the information exchange among online community members.
Findings
It was found that personality traits, testimonials, and the responses of community readers to bloggers affected word-of-mouth related to books. Exposure to testimonials with commercial characteristics will not necessarily hinder the word-of-mouth about books.
Practical implications
These results may provide a reference for publishers or related businesses that sell books or products via blogs during the planning of their marketing strategies.
Originality/value
Businesses value the effects of online communities on marketing communication. This study provides insights into the communication between bloggers and their community of readers by demonstrating how word-of-mouth affects the promotion of books. This could facilitate the selection of relevant recommendations by management.

Abstract
Urban water bodies play an important role in reducing summertime urban heat island (UHI) effects. Previous studies focused mainly on the impact of water bodies of large areas, and there is no analysis of the efficacy and scale effect of how small and medium-sized water bodies reduce the UHI effects. Hence, these studies could not provide theoretical support for the scientific planning and design of urban water bodies. This study aims to confirm, within different scale ranges, the efficacy of a water body in reducing the summertime UHI effects. We propose a scale sensitivity method to investigate the temporal and spatial relationship between urban water bodies and UHI. Based on the scale theory and geostatistical analysis method in landscape ecology, this study used the platforms of 3S, MATLAB, and SPSS to analyze the distance-decay law of water bodies in reducing summertime UHI effects, as well as the scale response at different water surface ratios. The results show that the influence of water surfaces on UHIs gradually decreases with increasing distance, and the temperature rises by 0.78 °C for every 100 m away from the water body. During daytime, there is a scaled sensitivity of how much water surfaces reduce the summertime UHI effects. The most sensitive radius from the water was found at the core water surface ratio of 200 m. A reduction of UHI intensity by 2.3 °C was observed for every 10% increase of the average core water surface ratio. This study provides a theoretical reference to the control of heat islands for the planning and design of urban water bodies.

Abstract
Green space is one of the main measures to alleviate urban heat islands (UHI). The transformation mechanism of daytime and nighttime scale sensitivity of vegetation coverage to reduce the UHI effect in a daily cycle has been unclear. As a result, we propose a scale sensitivity measurement algorithm to study the spatial and temporal response relationship between UHI and green coverage. Based on the scale theory of landscape ecology and the method of geostatistical analysis, we adopted ArcGIS, MATLAB, SPSS, and other data processing software as well as a large amount of measured and high-resolution satellite imagery data of Beijing and Tianjin to quantitatively study their spatial scale sensitivity and daily variation features of urban green spaces to reduce summer UHI. The results show that first, the green coverage rate and the UHI intensity experience positive and negative correlations during the daytime, and negative correlations at night. When the correlation coefficient is significant, there is a linear relationship between the UHI intensity and the core green rate. Second, the reduction of the UHI by green spaces displays spatial and temporal change scale sensitivity characteristics. The radius scale of daytime sensitivity is 15m, and the radius scale of nighttime sensitivity is 60m. The study's conclusion enriches the theoretical parameters of landscape ecological scales and patterns, and provides spatial and temporal scales for systematic planning of green space to reduce UHI.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the motives of consumers in the dissemination of book reviews on the internet. It aims to present an exploratory investigation followed by an empirical study that seeks to analyze the effects of such motives on the communication behavior of consumers.
Design/methodology/approach
A study was conducted of both traditional and online focus groups to investigate from a broad perspective why consumers disseminate internet book reviews. A survey was also carried out of the disseminators of internet book reviews which aimed to assess the influence and importance of the motives on dissemination behavior.
Findings
The pluralistic approach to research methods adopted in this study reveals that a desire for sharing, venting negative feelings, and social interaction, as well as product involvement are the main motives why consumers disseminate internet book reviews. At the same time, except for venting negative feelings, all the motives generate positive influences on dissemination behaviors.
Practical implications
The findings can serve as a reference in the management and marketing strategies of book reviews for internet platform owners (e.g. internet bookstores or other shops) that provide book reviews. It is also envisioned that internet book reviews can recommend good books or promote the borrowing of books from libraries, and it is hoped that this study will serve as a reference for such promotion.
Originality/value
The broad applications of electronic word‐of‐mouth (eWOM) and their relevant benefits have been generally recognized by individuals and companies. This paper explores the motives and effects of word‐of‐mouth associated with book reviews online and makes relevant recommendations for management.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect of internet book reviews on reader borrowing intention.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used www.yumau.com, www.ptt.cc and the bulletin board system on www.lib.ntou.edu.tw to post announcements, soliciting 33 readers who had browsed internet book reviews to identify books to borrow. Then, using a content analytic method to analyze interview content, an investigation was conducted on the effect of internet book reviews, numbers of references and content of internet book reviews on reader borrowing intention.
Findings
These results revealed that numbers of references and content of internet book reviews play an important role in borrowing intention.
Practical implications
These results can provide librarians with a reference for promoting book‐borrowing activities. They can also provide internet bookstores with a reference for managing their book reviews.
Originality/value
Electronic word‐of‐mouth reviews have become an important guide to reader borrowing intention. The study investigates readers' thoughts on internet book reviews and their effects, and advances several management suggestions.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and the selection of ERP vendors on supply management performance for Fortune 500.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper adopts the supply chain maturity model adopted by Gupta and Handfield (2011) and used publicly available information such as articles, research report, newspapers to develop objective maturity ratings for four key indicators – strategic sourcing, category management, and supplier relationship management.
Findings
The analysis results suggest ERP users are more mature than non-ERP users in three key indicators: strategic sourcing, category management, and supplier relationship management. Moreover, SAP ERP users are more mature than non-ERP users in strategic sourcing, category management, and supplier relationship management.
Research limitations/implications
This study does not account for the longitudinal performance of ERP systems, nor does it account for differences between organizational scope of ERP deployment, global reach, or implementation duration. The authors also did not include other measures of supply chain performance outside of the procurement area. These factors could provide further insights to supply chain performance, and will be an interesting topic for future research.
Practical implications
This study provides an extensive analysis of how the deployment of ERP systems and the selection of ERP vendors can benefit a company’s supply chain performance. This information is valuable for companies that are considering adapting an ERP system.
Originality/value
This paper uses innovative an maturity assessment rating approach with publicly available resources to measure supply management performance across different companies. This method is novel and provides valuable insights to how ERP systems and their vendors’ impact supply chain management performance.
