Abstract
Purpose
Phenolic epoxy vinyl ester resin (PEVER) is an advanced resin matrix, which has excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation. However, the brittleness and poor toughness of its curing product limited its application, so this paper aims to modify the PEVER with hyperbranched polyimide (HBPI), so as to enhance the toughness, heat resistance and dielectric properties of PEVER.
Design/methodology/approach
Hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer was used as the central reactant. Methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride was used as the branching unit, stannous octoate was used as the catalyst and hydroquinone was prepared as the inhibitor. Then, the hyperbranched structure of HBPI was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and 13C-NMR. Next, PEVER was mixed with different contents of HBPI, and then the authors tested its curing product.
Findings
It is found that with the addition of HBPI, the free volume of the system was increased and the content of polar groups was decreased in each unit space, so the dielectric constant (ε) and the dielectric loss (tanδ) were decreased. In addition, PEVER could be well toughened by HBPI and the thermal stability of PEVER was improved.
Originality/value
HBPI has excellent heat resistance. The addition of hyperbranched polymer increases the free volume of the system so it can slow down the transfer of stress and its nearly circular structure can absorb the impact energy from all directions. Moreover, an appropriate amount of free volume can decrease the dielectric constant of PEVER by reducing the content of polar groups.

Purpose
Social signal processing under affective computing aims at recognizing and extracting useful human social interaction patterns. Fight is a common social interaction in real life. A fight detection system finds wide applications. This paper aims to detect fights in a natural and low-cost manner.
Design/methodology/approach
Research works on fight detection are often based on visual features, demanding substantive computation and good video quality. In this paper, the authors propose an approach to detect fight events through motion analysis. Most existing works evaluated their algorithms on public data sets manifesting simulated fights, where the fights are acted out by actors. To evaluate real fights, the authors collected videos involving real fights to form a data set. Based on the two types of data sets, the authors evaluated the performance of their motion signal analysis algorithm, which was then compared with the state-of-the-art approach based on MoSIFT descriptors with Bag-of-Words mechanism, and basic motion signal analysis with Bag-of-Words.
Findings
The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach accurately detects fights in real scenarios and performs better than the MoSIFT approach.
Originality/value
By collecting and annotating real surveillance videos containing real fight events and augmenting with well-known data sets, the authors proposed, implemented and evaluated a low computation approach, comparing it with the state-of-the-art approach. The authors uncovered some fundamental differences between real and simulated fights and initiated a new study in discriminating real against simulated fight events, with very good performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the present study is to examine the relationships among knowledge management strategies, innovation, and organisational performance in the Iraqi mobile telecommunication sector.
Design/methodology/approach
Research suggests that knowledge management strategies are essential capabilities for effective innovation and organisational performance. Through analysis of surveys collected from 220 mid‐level managers, the present study empirically tested a proposed theoretical framework by estimating structural equation model.
Findings
The results show that knowledge management strategies had a statistically significant and direct positive effect on innovation and organisational performance. Most outstandingly, the results indicate that knowledge management strategies had a positive and statistically significant effect on organisational performance through the partial mediation effect of innovation.
Originality/value
Conclusions of the present study may help academics and managers in implementing knowledge management strategies in order to enhance innovation and improve organisational performance.

Purpose
This paper aims to introduce the history and major achievement of the Chinese private enterprise survey (CPES), which is one of the most enduring large-scale nationwide sample surveys in China, providing important micro firm-level data for understanding and studying the development of Chinese enterprises and entrepreneurs over the past 26 years.
Design/methodology/approach
The main body of this paper is based on a bibliometric analysis of all literature using CPES until 2017.
Findings
This paper discusses problems that users may encounter during data mining. By doing so, it can assist other researchers to get a better understanding of what has been done (e.g. journals, topics, scholars and institutions) and do their research in a more targeted way.
Research limitations/implications
As members of the survey project team, the authors also take a prospect of the future data design and use, as well as offer some suggestions about how to use the CPES data to improve high-quality development and business environment evaluation in China.
Originality/value
This paper is the first to provide an overall picture of academic papers in China and abroad that have used the CPES data.

Abstract
Purpose
The present study aims to experimentally investigate the flexural and buckling performances of novel sandwich panels manufactured with sawdust-based modified mortar core and both polypropylene and reinforced polymer plates as skins.
Design/methodology/approach
The experimental investigation includes two main steps, characterization tests were firstly carried out in order to identify the laws behavior of the constitutive raw materials. The second one investigates 42 sandwich panels tested under three-points bending and buckling according to standard norms.
Findings
The emphasized test results in terms of bearing capacity; buckling strength, ductility, and failure mechanisms confirm that the overall and observed behavior of tested eco-friendly panels was in general satisfactory compared with experimental values reported in the literature. Indeed, the failure modes under bending and buckling conditions were summarized as shear/crimping failure of the sawdust-based mortar core without debonding of the core–skins interface.
Originality/value
The paper provides original information about the development of novel sandwich panels with a bio-based core and polymer skins for construction usage as interior partitioning walls.
