Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate whether brand positioning strategies influence individuals’ conformity in product choices and identifies the mediator and boundary condition of this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the hypotheses, three experiments were conducted, with data collected using an online platform.

Findings

The results indicate that local (vs global) brand positioning promotes consumers’ tendencies to conform in their product choice. Furthermore, this effect is sequentially driven by their perceived similarity with such positioning and the feeling of social connectedness. The influence of local (vs global) brand positioning on consumer conformity diminishes among consumers with a focus on similarity.

Originality/value

This study expands the consumer conformity literature by identifying a new antecedent of consumer conformity. It also introduces a novel downstream consequence of local (vs global) brand positioning on consumer behavior and provides a broader theoretical basis for understanding the psychological connotations underlying local (vs global) brands.

Abstract

Purpose

The occurrence and dissemination of hate videos in social media platform could pose serious harm to both society and individuals. However, the characteristics of the hate videos increase the difficulty of detection task. Hate content is usually presented in a relatively covert manner in videos, and textual content in videos plays an important role in hate video detection. In this work, we propose a textual context enhanced dynamic bimodal fusion (TCE-DBF) method for hate video detection.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method TCE-DBF introduces dynamic modality gate (DMG) and bimodal fusion transformer network to dynamically integrate multimodalities. Moreover, in order to enhance textual modality in videos, two types of textual context from the video are taken as the input of TCE-DBF. One is extracted from video frames in visual modality. The other is extracted from audio in acoustic modality. Specially, TCE-DBF splits the original audio and learns the sequence representation to capture acoustic temporal information.

Findings

Hate video detection has been one of the hotspots in recent works. However, it still faces two serious challenges. The first challenge is the hate content in videos presented in multimodalities. The second challenge is how to evaluate the importance of different modalities for multimodal fusion modeling. TCE-DBF aims to tackle these challenges. Experimental results on hate video dataset HateMM demonstrate that TCE-DBF outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, and the visualization results show that textual modality plays a more important role in hate video detection. Therefore, it is vital to consider the text in videos.

Originality/value

TCE-DBF can be utilized to effectively detect hate videos on social media. Besides transcript, TCE-DBF considers text in video frames, which makes detection more accurate. Meanwhile, to better achieve multimodal fusion, TCE-DBF uses DMG and bimodal fusion transformer network to dynamically assign different weights to three modalities and integrate them. The proposed TCE-DBF is novel in terms of capturing multimodal features, enhancing the textual modality and achieving high detection performance for hate video detection.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how incidental emotions interact with brand concepts that are represented as human values to influence consumers’ attitude toward brands. It also explores the effect of construal level on such interactional effect.

Design/methodology/approach

Three incidental emotion × brand concepts between-subject experiments were performed on consumers. The first two experiments used real brands as stimuli, while the third one featured a fictitious brand.

Findings

Results revealed that the motivational congruency between incidental emotions and brand concepts leads to favorable consumer responses toward the targeted brand by inducing an experience of fluency. However, such effect only emerges among consumers with a high construal level.

Originality/value

This paper provides a new insight about the effect of brand concept represented as human values by identifying the role of situational factors (incidental emotions) and personal factors (chronic construal level), which are also easily administered and applied in everyday marketing contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically disrupted everyday life, leading to a cascade of negative emotional responses such as death anxiety. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the buffering effect of brand attachment on death anxiety by exploring the roles of brand concepts and brand positioning on psychological compensation for security.

Design/methodology/approach

This multi-method paper features four studies and shows how brands can offer emotional support under high-risk circumstances.

Findings

Study 1 includes two surveys which offer preliminary evidence that death anxiety can enhance consumers’ brand attachment. Study 2 reveals a causal effect wherein consumers experiencing death anxiety are more likely to attach to brands with a self-transcendence (vs self-enhancement) concept. Study 3 examines the mediating role of need for security in the relationship between death anxiety and attachment to brands with a self-transcendence concept. Further, Study 4 indicates the moderating role of brand positioning: self-transcendence brands adopting local (vs global) positioning strategies are more likely to satisfy consumers’ need for security, thereby leading to strong brand attachment.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper contribute to the brand attachment literature and to the global branding literature regarding consumers’ emotional responses in the context of COVID-19. This paper innovatively frames brand concepts and brand positioning and provides actionable guidelines to help brands satisfy consumers’ needs amid a worldwide crisis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply an analysis of complex networks to empirically research international agricultural commodity trade and countries’ trading relations. The structure of global agricultural commodity trade is quantitatively described and analysed.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on statistical physics and graph theory, the research paradigm of a complex network, which has sprung up in the last decade, provides us with new global perspective to discuss the topic of international trade, especially agricultural commodity trade. In this paper, the authors engage in the issue of countries’ positions in international agricultural commodity trade using the latest complex network theories. The authors at first time introduce the improved bootstrap percolation to simulate cascading influences following the breaking down of bilateral agricultural commodity trade relations.

Findings

On a mid-level structure, countries are classified into three communities that reflect the structure of the “core/periphery” using the weighted extremal optimisation algorithm and the coarse graining process. On a micro-level, countries’ rankings are provided with the aid of network’s node centralities, which presents world agricultural commodity trade as a closed, imbalanced, diversified and multi-polar development.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Integrating artificial intelligence and quantitative investment has given birth to various agricultural futures price prediction models suitable for nonlinear and non-stationary data. However, traditional models have limitations in testing the spatial transmission relationship in time series, and the actual prediction effect is restricted by the inability to obtain the prices of other variable factors in the future.

Design/methodology/approach

To explore the impact of spatiotemporal factors on agricultural prices and achieve the best prediction effect, the authors innovatively propose a price prediction method for China's soybean and palm oil futures prices. First, an improved Granger Causality Test was adopted to explore the spatial transmission relationship in the data; second, the Seasonal and Trend decomposition using Loess model (STL) was employed to decompose the price; then, the Apriori algorithm was applied to test the time spillover effect between data, and CRITIC was used to extract essential features; finally, the N-Beats model was selected as the prediction model for futures prices.

Findings

Using the Apriori and STL algorithms, the authors found a spillover effect in agricultural prices, and past trends and seasonal data will impact future prices. Using the improved Granger causality test method to analyze the unidirectional causality relationship between the prices, the authors obtained a spatial effect among the agricultural product prices. By comparison, the N-Beats model based on the spatiotemporal factors shows excellent prediction effects on different prices.

Originality/value

This paper addressed the problem that traditional models can only predict the current prices of different agricultural products on the same date, and traditional spatial models cannot test the characteristics of time series. This result is beneficial to the sustainable development of agriculture and provides necessary numerical and technical support to ensure national agricultural security.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study a fractional grey model FAGM(1,1,tα) based on the GM(1,1,tα) model and the fractional accumulated generating operation, and then predict the national health expenditure, the government health expenditure and the out-of-pocket health expenditure of China.

Design/methodology/approach

The presented univariate grey model is systematically studied by using the grey modelling technique, the fractional accumulated generating operation and the trapezoid approximation formula of definite integral. The optimal system parameters r and α are evaluated by the particle swarm optimisation algorithm.

Findings

The expressions of the time response function and the restored values of this model are derived. The GM(1,1), NGM(1,1,k,c) and GM(1,1,tα) models are particular cases of the FAGM(1,1,tα) model with deterministic r and α. Compared with other forecasting models, the results of the FAGM(1,1,tα) model have higher precision.

Practical implications

The superiority of the new model has high potential to be used in the medicine and health fields and others. Results can provide a guideline for government decision making.

Originality/value

The univariate fractional grey model FAGM (1,1,tα) successfully studies the China’s health expenditure.

Abstract

Purpose

The mega railway infrastructure projects are faced with complex environments and multi-level management challenges. Thus, the mega railway infrastructure project management system not only needs to focus on its composition, but also needs to consider changes and impacts of internal and external environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study attempts to introduce the concept of dissipative structure from the perspective of complexity theory and constructs a positive entropy and negentropy flow index system for mega railway infrastructure project management system in order to analyze the factors of management system more deeply. The Brusselator model is used to construct the structure of the mega railway infrastructure project management system, and the entropy method is used to calculate the positive entropy and negentropy values to verify whether the management system is a dissipative structure.

Findings

A plateau railway project in China was used as an example for an empirical study, not only its own characteristics are analyzed, but also the role of constraints and facilitation of the internal and external environment. Based on the research results, several effective suggestions are put forward to improve the stability and work efficiency of mega railway infrastructure project management system.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates that mega railway infrastructure project management system has the characteristics of dissipative structure. It can provide theoretical support for the development of mega railway infrastructure project management system from disorderly state to orderly state.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a novel multivariate fractional grey model termed GM(a, n) based on the classical GM(1, n) model. The new model can provide accurate prediction with more freedom, and enrich the content of grey theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The GM(α, n) model is systematically studied by using the grey modelling technique and the forward difference method. The optimal fractional order a is computed by the genetic algorithm. Meanwhile, a stochastic testing scheme is presented to verify the accuracy of the new GM(a, n) model.

Findings

The recursive expressions of the time response function and the restored values of the presented model are deduced. The GM(1, n), GM(a, 1) and GM(1, 1) models are special cases of the model. Computational results illustrate that the GM(a, n) model provides accurate prediction.

Research limitations/implications

The GM(a, n) model is used to predict China’s total energy consumption with the raw data from 2006 to 2016. The superiority of the GM(a, n) model is more freedom and better modelling by fractional derivative, which implies its high potential to be used in energy field.

Originality/value

It is the first time to investigate the multivariate fractional grey GM(α, n) model, apply it to study the effects of China’s economic growth and urbanization on energy consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

Inter-organizational collaboration is the organizational guarantee and key link to achieve the goals of megaproject management. Project governance has always played an important role in the construction of megaprojects, but the relationship between project governance and organizational collaboration is unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the role paths of different project governance mechanisms in influencing the collaborative behaviors of stakeholders and collaborative performance and to elucidate the mechanism of project governance on inter-organizational collaboration.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework was developed based on a comprehensive literature review, termed the structural equation model (SEM). The hypotheses of the model were tested based on data obtained from a questionnaire survey of 235 experts with experience in megaprojects within the construction industry in China.

Findings

The results show that project governance positively contributes to the collaborative behavior of megaproject stakeholders and the collaborative performance of the project team. Collaborative behavior acts as a partial mediator between project governance and the collaborative performance of the megaproject inter-organization alliance. The complexity of the project modulates the relationship between the governance mechanism of the project and the collaborative behavior of the stakeholders, which affects the collaborative performance of the megaproject inter-organization alliance.

Originality/value

The findings provide theoretical and practical implications for promoting positive collaborative behavior among stakeholders in megaproject selection and improving the collaborative performance of megaproject inter-organization alliances.
