Abstract
Purpose
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice and research regarding construction contractors are comparatively limited. The purpose of this research is to identify a series of CSR issues that reflect the major components of CSR, and to determine the perceived importance of these factors in the context of construction contractors.
Design/methodology/approach
A CSR indicator framework was developed based on stakeholder theory. CSR stakeholders and their corresponding CSR performance issues in construction contractors are classified into two levels, i.e. project level and organizational level. This is followed by a questionnaire survey to investigate the perceptions on relative importance of CSR issues of four key stakeholders in typical construction projects in China, i.e. construction contractors, clients, design and engineering consultancy and supervision firms.
Findings
The study highlighted a number of factors, e.g. “quality and safety of construction”, “occupational health and safety” and “supplier/partner relationship” were highly regarded; however, their relative importance varied according to the type of responding organization.
Research limitations/implications
The findings indicated the major concerns of the different parties in construction projects, thereby providing a pathway for construction contractors to improve their CSR practice.
Originality/value
The priorities of various stakeholders described in this paper provide a useful reference for construction contractors in the selection and adoption of criteria for CSR performance. A better understanding of perceived priorities of CSR factors from different participating parties also serves useful inputs to construction contractors in their stakeholder management process.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the evolution of spatial–temporal patterns in China’s hotel industry from 1978 to 2018.
Design/methodology/approach
A database comprising over 140,000 hotels with more than 30 rooms was created. The exploratory spatial–temporal data analysis (ESTDA) method, based on space–time cube model, was used to explore and visualize the spatial–temporal pattern of hotels.
Findings
The Chinese hotel industry can be divided into two development stages, namely, a large hotel-dominant stage before 2000 and a small–medium-sized hotel-dominant stage after 2000. China’s prefecture-level cities were clustered into four tiers. The higher the tier, the earlier the city will initiate hotel development. The Chinese hotel industry has four continuous hotspots (the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Bohai Rim and Sichuan and Chongqing) and some temporary hotspots.
Research limitations/implications
This study lacks quantitative investigation, which could show the underlying mechanism of the evolution of the Chinese hotel industry.
Originality/value
This study is the first to investigate China’s hotel evolution over 40 years by applying big data and the ESTDA method. The systematic and evolutionary exploration will enable hotel researchers to understand the spatial–temporal nature of hotel distribution better. Introducing the ESTDA method into tourism and hotel research also provides an additional tool to researchers. Hotel investors and operators, city and tourism planners and market regulators can learn from the evolution of location patterns to make better where and when decisions.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the relationship between task-technology fit and employee innovative behavior, as well as the role of creative self-expectations.
Design/methodology/approach
Hierarchical regression analysis was used to test the proposed multilevel model on a sample of 407 employees working in Chinese companies.
Findings
Task-technology fit stimulates employee innovative behavior through the regulation of creative self-expectations and positive emotions. When creative self-expectations is low, the promoting effect of task-technology fit on innovative behavior is enhanced. However, when creative self-expectations is too high, this effect is reversed due to employees’ preference for challenging and complex work.
Practical implications
In the process of enterprise digital transformation, managers should not only focus on the alignment between employees' skills and individual task expectations, but also pay attention to employees' emotions and individual trait differences, to enhance the likelihood of innovative behavior occurrence and achieve successful enterprise digital transformation.
Originality/value
This study enriches the research on task-technology fit and provides recommendations for organizations to achieve digital transformation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of the porous structure on the maximum stress and modulus of elasticity of the specimens which are fabricated by rapid prototypes. According to the experimental results, modify the theoretical formula of elastic modulus.
Design/methodology/approach
The Objet Eden 250 was used to prepare the Vero White photosensitive resin samples with different porosity (ranges from 25 to 65 per cent) and different pore structures. The mechanical properties of different samples were numerically simulated and the formulas of the modulus of elasticity were established. Through the compression test, the performance of the specimen is compared and analyzed, and the theoretical elastic modulus formula is optimized.
Findings
With the increase of porosity, the maximum stress of honeycomb structure specimens decreases. The maximum stress of the honeycomb structure specimen with circular pore shape is higher than the hexagon cross-section while the hexahedron and octahedron structure are the arms (wall thickness between pores) with a square cross-section. The error comparison between the modulus of elasticity before and after the structure models regression analysis shows that after the regression analysis, the error of theoretical value and the actual value is between 0 and 14 per cent which is lower than the value before the regression analysis which was between 5 and 27 per cent.
Originality/value
The paper obtains rules of the influence of different porous structures which were fabricated by the Vero White photosensitive resin material on mechanical properties and higher prediction accuracy formula of elastic modulus. The conclusions provide a theoretical basis for Northeastern University, China, to reduce mass and mechanical properties prediction of load-bearing parts.

Abstract
Purpose
Browsing knowledge documents in a peer-to-peer (P2P) environment is difficult because knowledge documents in such an environment are large in quantity and distributed over different peers who organize the documents according to their own views. This paper aims to propose a method for constructing a personal knowledge map for a peer to facilitate knowledge browsing and alleviate information overload in P2P environments.
Design/methodology/approach
The research presents a method for constructing a personal knowledge map. The method adopts an ontology-concept-tree-based classification algorithm to recognize a peer’s personal knowledge structure and construct a personal knowledge map, and uses a self-organizing map algorithm to cluster and visualize the knowledge documents. The correctness of the created knowledge map is evaluated with a collection of abstracts of academic papers.
Findings
The method for constructing a personal knowledge map is the main finding of this research. The evaluation shows that the created knowledge map is good in quality.
Research limitations/implications
The proposed method provides a way for P2P platforms to understand their users’ knowledge background, as well as to improve the P2P platform environment. However, the proposed method will not help a peer when he has nothing in his individual knowledge document repository (i.e. the “cold start” problem). The method also requires a relatively good ontology base for a P2P document sharing system to use the method effectively.
Originality/value
It is novel that the proposed method organizes the knowledge documents related to a peer’s knowledge background into a personal knowledge map. Moreover, the created knowledge map combines the advantages of a hierarchical display and a map display. It has values for a distributed P2P environment to facilitate users’ knowledge browsing and to alleviate information overload.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to focus on numerical simulation investigations of deformation analysis of asymmetric break-down rolling of a hollow steel, which seriously affects the service life of the final product.
Design/methodology/approach
The 3D rigid-plastic thermo-mechanical coupled finite element method (FEM) for a large strain was used to analyze metal deformation in the deformation zone for asymmetric rolling with different roller diameters.
Findings
The distribution of stress, strain and dimension accuracy for different diameters was obtained. The results show that the additional shear strain which is different from the normal compression deformation is generated in an asymmetric rolling process. The higher the ratio between upper and lower diameters, the greater the additional shear deformation.
Originality/value
Asymmetric rolling is an important factor affecting the dimensional accuracy of the hollow steel. This study can provide a theoretical basis for developing a reasonable rolling process of the hollow steel.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical background, methodological extensions, and empirical applications of the Engel curve, which is applied to the research of the change in farmers’ welfare and food demand in China after the economic reform in 1978, compared with the statistics of income and food consumption.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper mainly uses the traditional method of Engel curve, which is compared with income growth and food consumption, to study farmers’ welfare improvement in rural China.
Findings
The Engel coefficients identify three different stages for farmers’ welfare change after 1978. The first stage is the period between 1978 and 1988, in which farmers’ welfare has been continuously enhanced due to the institutional bonus of the 1978 economic reform and increased government purchase price of agricultural products. The second stage is the period between 1989 and 1995, in which farmers’ welfare has been slightly deteriorated mainly due to the end of institutional reform bonus, suppressed food prices, relative high inflation, and instable political situation. The third stage is the period after 1995, in which farmers’ welfare returns to a growing path, as the dual price system was abolished, the transition from a planned economy to a market economy had been completed, and the government carried out protective policies for agriculture and started to heavily subsidize agriculture. The Engel coefficient still remained at a very high level at 0.59 in 1995, but it continuously decreased to 0.33 in 2015. The welfare enhancement for farmers mainly results from deepened market-oriented reform, protective policies for agriculture, and prevalent off-farm employment. The Engel coefficient is also linked to food demand elasticities. Along with the decreasing Engel coefficient in the past 40 years, income elasticities also continuously decrease from 0.55 in 1978 to 0.08 in 2015. Food demand is very inelastic now, and any further increase in income will not substantially increase food demand any more.

Inequality has not been analyzed.
Originality/value
This paper reviews the methodological advantages of the Engel curves, and uses it to identify different stages of welfare change and estimate income elasticities of food demand for farmers in China after the 1978 economic reform.

Abstract
Purpose
China’s overall grain production efficiency is currently relatively low, and how to improve it is key to high-quality grain development. High-standard farmland construction fills the gaps in grain production, providing a path for improving comprehensive grain production capacity.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper analyzes grain production data from 281 Chinese cities and uses the meta-Malmquist index to calculate total factor productivity (TFP) of grain and the spatial autoregressive model with spatial error (SARAR) model to analyze the impact of high-standard farmland construction on TFP of grain. Finally, it tests the model for robustness and heterogeneity.
Findings
TFP of grain has room for improvement, and technological efficiency has a greater impact on it than technological progress. TFP of grain in the eastern region is significantly higher than that in central and western regions. High-standard farmland construction can significantly improve TFP and technology efficiency of grain, and its economic benefits are directly affected by the differences in regional grain economic development. High-standard farmland construction improves TFP of grain through agricultural mechanization, and its impact is heterogeneous; TFP of grain in the (poor, plain) eastern region is more likely to share its benefits.
Originality/value
This paper evaluates whether high-standard farmland construction has achieved its purpose of enhancing comprehensive grain production capacity. It offers novel insights into elevating element quality and comprehensive grain production capacity, provides a theoretical reference from the perspective of element quality and draws corresponding policy implications for high-standard farmland.

Abstract
Purpose
There have been limited investigations on the mechanical characteristics of tunnels supported by corrugated plate structures during fault dislocation. The authors obtained circumferential and axial deformations of the spiral corrugated pipe at various fault displacements. Lastly, the authors examined the impact of reinforced spiral stiffness and soil constraints on the support performance of corrugated plate tunnels under fault displacement.
Design/methodology/approach
By employing the theory of similarity ratios, the authors conducted model tests on spiral corrugated plate support using loose sand and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) spiral corrugated PE pipes for cross-fault tunnels. Subsequently, the soil spring coefficient for tunnel–soil interaction was determined in accordance with ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) specifications. Numerical simulations were performed on spiral corrugated pipes with fault dislocation, and the results were compared with the experimental data, enabling the determination of the variation pattern of the soil spring coefficient.
Findings
The findings indicate that the maximum axial tensile and compressive strains occur on both sides of the fault. As the reinforced spiral stiffness reaches a certain threshold, the deformation of the corrugated plate tunnel and the maximum fault displacement stabilize. Furthermore, a stronger soil constraint leads to a lower maximum fault displacement that the tunnel can withstand.
Research limitations/implications
In this study, the calculation formula for density similarity ratio cannot be taken into account due to the limitations of the helical corrugated tube process and the focus on the deformation pattern of helical corrugated tubes under fault action.
Originality/value
This study provides a basis for the mechanical properties of helical corrugated tube tunnels under fault misalignment and offers optimization solutions.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to solve the problem of information overload and reduce search costs. It proposes a social e-commerce online reputation formation model and community state-introduced model. A system dynamics trend simulation has been run to capture the relationship among the sellers, buyers, social e-commerce platforms and external environment to obtain an online reputation.
Design/methodology/approach
Empirical research relating to social e-commerce reputation has been used to confirm the influencing factors in social e-commerce, and a conceptual framework is developed for social e-commerce reputation formation. Thereafter, a trend simulation is generated to classify the relationship among the factors based on system dynamics. Also, the improved algorithm for community detection and a state-introduced model based on a Markov network are proposed to achieve better network partition for better online reputation management.
Findings
The empirical model captures the interaction effect of social e-commerce reputation and the state-introduced model to guide community public opinion and improve the efficiency of social e-commerce reputation formation. This helps minimize searching cost thereby improving social e-commerce reputation construction and management.
Research limitations/implications
There is no appropriate online reputation system to be constructed to test the relationship proposed in the study for a field experiment. Also, deeper investigation for the nodes’ attributes in social networks should be made in future research. Besides, researchers are advised to explore measurement for the reputation of a given seller by using social media data as from Twitter or micro blogs.
Originality/value
Investigations that study online reputation in the social e-commerce are limited. The empirical research figured out the factors which can influence the formation of online reputation in social e-commerce. An SD model was proposed to explain the factors interaction and trend simulation was run. Also, a state-introduced model was proposed to highlight the effect of nodes’ attributes on communities’ detection to give a deeper investigation for the online reputation management.
