Abstract
Purpose
Applications of online Second Life (SL) prevail over the world. The purpose of this paper is to make a review and synthesis of recent research studies on SL.
Design/methodology/approach
Documental analysis is employed. Totally, 135 research publications, published in 2006‐2008, are reviewed and synthesized.
Findings
Findings are as follows: the research studies on SL have been widened and deepened; SL has been widely applied in education and its research approach relies on descriptive methods; and SL has versatile charm for educators but pros and cons of SL in education simultaneously exist.
Research limitations/implications
Some articles might not be reviewed; authors did their best to collect data from relevant electronic databases.
Practical implications
This paper indicates the strengths and limitations of SL.
Originality/value
This paper identifies trends of recent research studies of as well as issues in using SL. Users and researchers of SL may realize trends of and issues in SL.

Abstract
Due to greater returns to high skill and desirable amenities, high-skilled workers are increasingly agglomerating in metropolitan areas and form path dependence. This chapter explores whether the land supply policy of China constraining big cities' urban construction land quota strengthens the spatial divergence of human capital. Using city-level land supply data, population census data, and land transaction micro data, we find that the higher the degree of a city's land supply lagging behind land demand, the greater the enlargement effect of the initial share of population with college degrees on the increase in share of population with college degrees. Further research reveals that the main mechanism causing this phenomenon is the rapidly rising housing prices hindering low-skill labor flows to big cities.

Abstract
Purpose
Previous studies indicate that both health and taste are important factors in the food choice process. Owing to the industrialization of food processing and biotechnological innovations on the one hand and a series of food scandals on the other, consumers are now more concerned about modern food hazards. The present study aims to investigate whether consumers with varying degrees of modern tainted foods worries and gender difference will show variations in the Health and Taste Attitude Scales (HTAS).
Design/methodology/approach
Of a total of 1,500 questionnaires sent out, 533 were found useful for this empirical analysis. The measurement items of the Health and Taste Attitude Scale (HTAS) were scored as the data input to test for the impacts of modern tainted foods worries and gender by ANOVA tests.
Findings
The results of this study conducted in Taiwan indicate that those people identified in the ‘‘high modern tainted foods worries’’ group have more interests in health in foods but the ‘‘low modern tainted foods worries’’ group have more interests in taste in foods. In addition, though more concerned about health in foods, female consumers are also more interested in sweet foods.
Practical implications
Some suggestions for food marketers and food policy makers are also provided in this study.
Originality/value
To the best knowledge of this researcher, this study represents one of the first attempts to investigate the health and taste attitudes in Taiwan and tests for the impacts of modern tainted foods worries and gender.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess the application of the nascent corporate opportunity doctrine in China by comparison with its well-established English counterpart; in particular, it evaluates whether the fine balance between business integrity and business efficiency has been struck.
Findings
It is argued that the scope of application of the corporate opportunity doctrine in China should be extended, and the rules on the burden of proof should be amended. Moreover, a stricter approach should be adopted by the Chinese judiciary for the purpose of protecting the company’s interests and enhancing business integrity.
Research limitations/implications
This paper mainly focuses on the corporate opportunity doctrine. It does not discuss other duties of directors in detail.
Practical implications
It is useful for directors in balancing business integrity and business efficiency.
Originality/value
It is an original piece of work which assesses the corporate opportunity doctrine by making comparison with English law.
