Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the French hospitality sector and to determine what firm characteristics (particularly entrepreneurship orientation and strategic initiatives) explain differences in performance. The study is based on data from hotels and differentiates between high- and low-performing businesses. The study examines performance differences relating to entrepreneurial orientation and strategic initiatives. The conclusions indicate that there are differences between high- and low-performing groups, and overall, it seems that there is a relationship between high performance and entrepreneurial, well-planned strategic initiatives.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a structured telephone interview procedure to solicit respondents from owner/operators of the hotels throughout the region. The process for gathering data resulted in 66 hotels providing complete responses during interview sessions.

Findings

The primary intent of this study was to examine the relationships between entrepreneurial orientation and strategic initiatives with SME performance. The findings suggest that differences exists. Interestingly, we found that better performing group used more people and tended to see business environment much more favorable compared to low-performing group.

Originality/value

Entrepreneurial orientation research suggest that SMEs firms operate distinct from other ones given different patterns used. These differences come from how SMEs leverage the proactiveness, risk-taking and innovativeness dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation in a firm. Waal and his colleagues suggested that activities associated with creating a high-performing organization using strategic initiatives will lead to subsequent high financial performance. The research found here would also support such an assertion. However, care should be taken in interpreting the generalizability of these results given the limited number of hotels participating in this study; more work is still needed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient current control technique based on model predictive control (MPC) for grid-connected wind conversion system. This nonlinear strategy is applied for the chopper circuit and grid-tied inverter and compared with other two conventional schemes; a traditional proportional-integral (PI) and sliding mode controller (SMC) using the same switching frequency.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the MPC scheme uses the mathematical model to predict future behaviors of the controlled converter outputs for possible switching states. After that, the optimal voltage vector is selected by minimizing a cost function, which is defined as a sum of the absolute values of the controlled current errors. Then, the corresponding switching signals are applied to the converter switches in the next sampling period to track correctly the reference current. Thus, the MPC scheme ensures a minimal error between the predicted and reference trajectories of the considered variables.

Findings

The MPC-based algorithm presents several benefits in terms of high accuracy control, reduced DC-link voltage ripples during steady-state operation, faster transient response, lower overshoots and disturbance rejection and acceptable total harmonic distortion.

Originality/value

The authors introduce several simulation case studies, using PSIM software package, which prove the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed MPC scheme. Therefore, the MPC performances, during dynamic and steady-state condition, are compared with those obtained by a PI regulator and SMC to highlight the improvements, specifically the transfer of smooth power to the grid.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the institutional factors affecting the reform of public sector in Morocco. In particular, this study focuses on the adoption path of one such reform, in which Moroccan municipalities had to adopt economic and development plans (EDPs).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper’s methodology adopts a qualitative approach. In particular, the paper adopts a mix of primary and secondary sources to analyze the historical development of the EDP reform in the Moroccan context, and the institutional factors involved in the implementation process. It contributes to the existing literature in two ways: it defines a tentative model that combines two approaches (new and old institutional theories); and it contextualizes the proposed model in the Moroccan context by examining the institutional process of implementing the reforms.

Findings

The reform that introduced EDPs in Morocco was the result of a collaboration between the Moroccan government and international donors. The introduction of EDPs was impeded by institutional features of Moroccan society. Therefore, the implementation of EDPs in Morocco did not change taken-for-granted ways of thinking, nor did it remove institutional restrictions and barriers. Municipalities were not affected by the modernizing effects of the reform. They are managed as traditional administrative structures, with very little capacity for organizational and management innovation.

Originality/value

The paper contributes to the debate on the adequacy of new public management (NPM) in less developed countries (LDCs), and in particular with regards to the use of strategic plans in Moroccan municipalities. In doing so, the paper attempts to define a tentative framework that combines new institutional and old institutional theory. The framework proposed helps to explain how NPM in LDCs was diffused and how institutional characteristics could hamper or foster the implementation of NPM reform.
