Abstract

Purpose

A global industrial revolution driven by carbon neutrality and digital technologies (DTs) is fast gaining momentum. However, the present understanding of how firms should leverage digitalization for sustainability is underdeveloped. This paper aims to explore how digital orientation can improve environmental performance from the natural resource-based view.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample set of 132 Chinese firms, the authors adopt the hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrap approach to examine the hypotheses.

Findings

The empirical results show that green DT usage, green DT disposal and green practices-DT fit are three factors that mediate the positive relationship between digital orientation and environmental performance. In addition, of the five possible mediational paths, only the serial mediation of green DT usage and green practices-DT fit, as well as the serial mediation of green DT disposal and green practices-DT fit, show significant effects.

Originality/value

The authors contribute to the current digitalization and sustainability literature by demonstrating the processes through which digital orientation influences environmental performance. The study also provides managerial implications for firms to adjust their operations.

Abstract

Purpose

While the usage of digital technology can bring many operational improvements for firms, it is unclear whether it can effectively improve firm resilience to deal with supply chain disruptions caused by emergencies such as COVID-19. From a dynamic capability perspective, this study aims to investigate how digital technology usage can improve firm resilience in a rapidly changing and turbulent environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the survey sample of 237 Chinese firms, the stepwise regression approach was used to examine the proposed research hypotheses.

Findings

The empirical evidence shows that digital technology usage has a U-shaped effect on firm resilience, and that effect is fully achieved by first affecting market acuity and then promoting resource reconfiguration. Moreover, the authors further found that the U-shaped association between digital technology usage and firm resilience is derived from the U-shaped association between digital technology usage and market acuity.

Originality/value

This study enriches the resilience literature by revealing the mechanism of digital technology usage’s effects rather than focusing on the role of specific digital technologies. This study also provides guidance for firms to develop effective digital technology usage strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

Cultural differences between employees of different nationalities are hindering the development of some transnational joint ventures. Describing and modelling the positive (or negative) factors that cause joint venture employees to accept (or reject) joint management business practices is of great value to all corporations operating abroad with locally sourced employees.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a Sino-Japan construction joint venture project as a representative case study. First, structural equation modelling is used to identify the factors influencing Chinese employees' acceptance of joint venture management practices. Then, a system dynamics model is adopted to simulate the time-dependent effects of the incentives.

Findings

The study results (1) indicate which incentives strongly affect employee acceptance of joint venture management practices; (2) identify inefficient management practices in cross-cultural joint ventures; and (3) provide evidence that the employees' perceptions of clear purpose, good working relationships and helpful mechanisms positively and directly also support their acceptance of joint management practices.

Originality/value

–A dynamic simulation method is used to analyse the influence of various incentive factors on employee acceptance of joint management. This provides unprecedented information regarding how these factors interact with each other, hence how their effectiveness varies (both positively and negatively) over time. Further findings also provide new ideas for joint venture managers to adopt more effective management methods.

Abstract

Chatbot technology is growing swiftly across the banking and finance industry. The study aims to explore the influence of Task-Technology Fit (TTF), system suitability, perceived usefulness, social influence and satisfaction on respondents’ continuance intention among the chatbot-users. A total of 250 responses were collected using a structured questionnaire via social media across India. The measurement model was proposed based on the system usability (SUS) and TTF model with other constructs, and the hypothesis was tested using a structural equation model. The findings of the study highlighted and confirmed the association among five constructs: TTF, SUS, perceived usefulness, social influence, on satisfaction and continuance intention in the context of chatbots usage in banking.

Abstract

Friendships, an important form of people’s everyday relationships with others, have been studied by many scholars from different disciplines. However, there is limited research on friendship in the context of childhood, particularly that of Chinese rural children. This chapter presents findings from an in-depth study on Chinese children’s understandings and experiences of friendships with peers in the context of a rural primary boarding school. Data for this research were collected through an intensive five-month study, using an ethnographic approach, in a rural primary boarding school (given the pseudonym ‘Central Primary School’) in the western area of China in 2016. This chapter discusses parents’ influences on children’s selection of friends, particularly their ‘good’ friends, and their understandings of the functions of making friends in the context of rural China. It unpacks parents’ interventions on children’s friendships by discussing the moralised hierarchical relationship between children and their parents – children are expected to show obedience to parents. Then, it argues that the Confucian-collectivist values construct a relationship between a child’s individual achievement and their family’s collective good, which makes friendship not only an individual issue but also a collective one too.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examined the dynamical and positive effects of leader consultation on employee proactivity from a motivational perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected twice a day from 107 employees in a week by using an experience sampling method.

Findings

On a daily basis, leader consultation had a positive effect on employees’ state work engagement, which in turn promoted employees’ proactivity. Moreover, authoritarian leadership weakened the positive relationship between leader consultation and employees’ state work engagement.

Originality/value

The findings provided a new perspective regarding the potential dynamic motivational effect of leader consultation on employees and generated interesting implications for paradoxical leadership theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on social exchange theory (SET) and signaling theory (ST), this study aims to evaluate how an event’s perceived environmental certification (PEC) by residents, affect their evaluations of environmental impacts and subsequent event support (ES). The moderating role of place attachment (PA) on some of these relationships is also evaluated.

Design/methodology/approach

Using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), a theoretical model is tested on a sample of 450 residents who attended the 2015 Milan World Expo.

Findings

PEC positively affects evaluations of positive environmental impacts (PEI) but negatively affects evaluations of negative environmental impacts (NEI). PEC positively affects ES while the relationship between PEC and NEI is moderated by PA.

Research limitations/implications

Items used to measure PEC, PEI and NEI are not exhaustive. SET has its own limitations in explaining residents’ ES, which the authors have attempted to attenuate by using ST.

Practical implications

Using environmental certification as a communication tool must demonstrate to residents how it reduces negative externalities, rather than focusing only on its positive community benefits. Less well-educated residents had the lowest ES, suggesting the need to use social media to increase ES.

Originality/value

This study contributes to understandings of the perceptions of the benefits of event certification by residents, and how this affects their ES. PA moderates the relationship between PEC and NEI.

In this paper, the theory of groups is used in the discussion of the properties of branching solutions of Lorenz’s models with fixed constants. The result shows that the three branching solutions of Lorenz’s model with fixed constants can be connected together through the group {I, e}, and that if an orbit of Lorenz’s equation is given, there must exist another corresponding orbit through the group {I, e}. Just as the model is deterministic, so is the solution.

After many years’ practice and experiments, it was found that quantitative analysis systems with unequal quantitative effect cannot be extended into that with equal quantitative effect. While it is related to such epistemological viewpoints as irregularity and continuity systems, an infrastructural form comparison has shown universally scientific and methodological characteristics. In combination with evolution of weather systems, our infrastructural analysis involves applications of super low temperatures, reversed information order, rolling currents infrastructure in reversal weather change and long‐term weather forecasting.
