Abstract
Purpose
A comprehensive study on the fluid flow and heat transfer in a nanofluid channel is carried out. The configuration of the channel is as like as quarter channel. The channel is filled with CuO–water nanofluid.
Design/methodology/approach
The Koo–Kleinstreuer–Li model is used to estimate the dynamic viscosity and consider the Brownian motion. On the other hand, the influence of nanoparticles’ shapes on the heat transfer rate is considered in the simulations. The channel is included with the injection pipes which are modeled as active bodies with constant temperature in the 2D simulations.
Findings
The Rayleigh number, nanoparticle concentration and the thermal arrangements of internal pipes are the governing parameters. The hydrothermal aspects of natural convection are investigation using different approaches such as average Nusselt number, total entropy generation, Bejan number, streamlines, temperature fields, local heat transfer irreversibility, local fluid friction irreversibility and heatlines.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is investigation of fluid flow, heat transfer, entropy generation and heatline visualization within a nanofluid-filled channel using a finite volume method.

Abstract
Purpose
Due to the non-linear nature of the hysteresis behavior, the accurate identification of the parameters of the Bouc–Wen hysteresis model is still a challenging problem. The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of a heuristic improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) to accurately identify the model parameters, which has never been applied to the field of piezoelectric hysteresis identification.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the analysis of the Bouc–Wen model structure and WOA optimization process, an approach that can fully exploit the potential of WOA is proposed. In this work, the position updating formula is improved by introducing non-linear weights, and the convergence factor formula is modified. And thus, the iteration speed, accuracy and stability of the classical WOA can be improved.
Findings
The experimental results show that the model output is in good agreement with the response of the real piezoelectric platform. Compared with the standard WOA and particle swarm optimization algorithms, the search performance of the proposed IWOA is better than those two competitors in terms of convergence speed and identification accuracy.
Originality/value
An IWOA is proposed according to the properties of the Bouc–Wen model and piezoelectric hysteresis. It has been approved that the algorithm has a good prospect in the identification of piezoelectric hysteresis systems. Furthermore, this method is easy to implement and is a good candidate algorithm to identify Bouc–Wen model parameters.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to restore the spatial distribution of overseas remittance businesses in Shantou during the 1940s. It explores various socioeconomic factors that influenced the concentration of local remittance business investment in real estate. By reconstructing the spatial distribution of remittance business activities in Shantou, this study hopes to lay a foundation for further analysis of the business strategies of Chaoshan merchants.
Design/methodology/approach
This research draws on information from the published Swatow Guide, archival sources and cadastral maps to identify the location of remittance enterprises and the native place and overseas networks of property owners.
Finding
This study reveals that the spatial distribution of the remittance enterprises was determined by the native place origins of local property owners, and that the inflow of overseas Chinese capital contributed to real estate development in Shantou.
Research limitations/implications
Despite the limited access to Chinese official archives, this paper manages to identify several building blocks and neighbors in Shantou for spatial analysis.
Practical implications
This study is the first attempt to use the geographical information system (GIS) method in Chinese urban history research and hopes to establish a larger historical database of Shantou as a sample for comparison.
Originality/value
This investigation advances the spatial study of urban history and overseas Chinese remittances in the maritime society of South China.

This paper aims to extract the comment targets in Chinese online shopping platform.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to extract the comment targets in Chinese online shopping platform.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors first collect the comment texts, word segmentation, part-of-speech (POS) tagging and extracted feature words twice. Then they cluster the evaluation sentence and find the association rules between the evaluation words and the evaluation object. At the same time, they establish the association rule table. Finally, the authors can mine the evaluation object of comment sentence according to the evaluation word and the association rule table. At last, they obtain comment data from Taobao and demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper is effective by experiment.
Findings
The extracting comment target method the authors proposed in this paper is effective.
Research limitations/implications
First, the study object of extracting implicit features is review clauses, and not considering the context information, which may affect the accuracy of the feature excavation to a certain degree. Second, when extracting feature words, the low-frequency feature words are not considered, but some low-frequency feature words also contain effective information.
Practical implications
Because of the mass online reviews data, reading every comment one by one is impossible. Therefore, it is important that research on handling product comments and present useful or interest comments for clients.
Originality/value
The extracting comment target method the authors proposed in this paper is effective.

Abstract
Purpose
The goal of this research is to demonstrate micro‐electro‐mechanical systems (MEMS)‐based transducers for aircraft maneuvering. Research in wind tunnels have shown that micro‐actuators can be used to manipulate leading edge vortices found on aerodynamic surfaces with moderate to highly swept leading edges, such as a delta wing. This has been labeled as the MEMS vortex shift control (MEMS‐VSC). The work presented in this paper seeks to detail the evolution of real‐world flight tests of this research using remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs).
Design/methodology/approach
Four different RPVs were constructed and used for flight tests to demonstrate the ability of using MEMS devices to provide flight control, primarily in the rolling axis.
Findings
MEMS devices for high angle‐of‐attack (AOA) turning flights have been demonstrated and the paper finds that the success of a complex project like the MEMS‐VSC requires the marriage of basic science expertise found in academia and the technical expertise found in industry.
Research limitations/implications
Owing to the need to test fly the RPVs at low altitudes for video documentation while performing high AOA maneuvers, the attrition of the RPVs becomes the dominant factor to the pace of research.
Practical implications
MEMS sensors and actuators can be used to augment flight control at high AOA, where conventional control surfaces typically experiences reduced effectiveness. Separately, the lessons learned from the integration efforts of this research provide a potentially near parallel case study to the development of ornithopter‐based micro aerial vehicles.
Originality/value
This is the only research‐to‐date involving the demonstration of the MEMS‐VSC on real‐world flight vehicles.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to synthesize lessons from the agricultural value chain models and their associated financing mechanisms in China and India as to provide policy recommendations on how best to facilitate development of efficient and inclusive value chains.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper builds on a review of the existing literature on agricultural value chains and their financing mechanisms, and draws lessons from it for strengthening interface between product and financial markets in order to enable smallholders capture benefits of the value addition.
Findings
From the comparative review of value chain financing mechanisms and current policy contexts the authors find dominance of internal financing of value chains (in terms of provision of inputs, technology and services) in both the countries. Value chain finance from commercial banks and other financial institutions is limited and mainly through tripartite agreements among the financing institutions, lead firms and farmers.
Practical implications
The lessons drawn from various value chain models and their financing mechanisms provide feedback to financial institutions and policymakers to take measures to strengthen value chain finance in smallholder agriculture.
Originality/value
The paper undertakes a rigorous review of the existing value chain models and their financing mechanisms in light of the most recent research on emerging innovations and development strategies, in order to glean key lessons for policy recommendations on strengthening linkages between financial and product markets.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to formulate frameworks for the drivers and barriers of integrated sustainable solid waste management (ISSWM) with reference to conditions prevailing in India.
Design/methodology/approach
A multi-phased approach was adopted in this paper to come up with the conceptual framework of the drivers and barriers of ISSWM. In the first phase, drivers and barriers of ISSWM were identified based on a systematic literature review process. In the second phase, 25 experts having 15 plus years of experience in the field of sustainable development and environmental management were consulted to get their opinion. Validation and understanding of the interrelationship among the selected drivers and barriers were done based on the insights from expert interviews. And in the final phase, structural self-interaction matrix and transitive links are defined based on the expert opinion to come up with the theoretical frameworks of drivers and barriers of ISSWM.
Findings
Findings reveal the importance to have a system view point approach by giving equal importance to social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability along with the technology component to effectively and sustainably manage the solid waste disposal. Institutional effectiveness and the robust policy and frameworks are the two variables found to have the highest driving power. Poor social values and ethics, huge population and illiteracy are the three most critical barriers faced by developing nations in achieving the sustainability practices in the solid waste management. The proposed frameworks of drivers and barriers of ISSWM will definitely help policy makers to effectively manage the sustainable waste management practices for developing economies by focusing on the key variables listed out.
Research limitations/implications
One of the limitations is in the use of very limited sample size in the study. Another limitation is that total interpretive structural modeling fails to come up with the relative weightings of drivers and barriers used in the study. These limitations can be overcome by extending the research by using a semi-structured questionnaire survey with higher sample size for the empirical validation of the model.
Practical implications
This research will help to clearly understand the framework of drivers and barriers of variables and their hierarchical level based on the driving power and dependence. Since such articles focusing on the conceptual frameworks of drivers and barriers of ISSWM are found to be very scant, this paper will equally help academicians and waste management professionals to understand the concepts deeply, by getting answers to the fundamental questions of “what,” “why” and “how.” Developed framework of drivers explicitly shows the need to attain financial stability through the commercialization of the waste management initiatives, which will help to reduce burden on various governmental institutions. Commercialization opportunities will also help to have more successful start-up ventures in solid waste management domain that can provide improved employment opportunities and hygiene environment in the developing nations like India.
Originality/value
Based on the authors’ best knowledge, there is hardly any article that explicitly explains the conceptual frameworks of the drivers and barriers of ISSWM by considering the conditions prevailing in developing countries like India. And thus, this can be considered as one of the unique research attempts to build a clear conceptual framework of ISSWM. The study contributes significantly to the existing literature body by clearly interpreting the interrelationships and the driving power and dependence of variables of ISSWM.
