Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an interval method for vehicle allocation and route planning in case of an evacuation.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the evacuation route planning system is described and the notations are defined. An inexact programming model is proposed. The goal of the model is to achieve optimal planning of vehicles allocation with a minimized system time under the condition of inexact information. The constraints of the model include four types: number of vehicles constraint, passengers balance constraints, maximum capacity of links constraints and no negative constraints. The model is solved through the decomposition of the inexact model. A hypothetical case is developed to illustrate the proposed model.

Findings

The paper finds that the interval solutions are feasible and stable for evacuation model in the given decision space, and this may reduce the negative effects of uncertainty, thereby improving evacuation managers' estimates under different conditions.

Originality/value

This method entails incorporation of uncertainties existing as interval values into model formulation and solution procedure, and application of the developed model and the related solution algorithm in a hypothetical case study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to assess and determine the impact of the five core technologies of Industry 4.0 (3D Printing, Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and Robotics) on the organizational performance of the retail industry in the context of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

Pakistan's retail industry was chosen as the target sector, and the target population was composed of senior-level employees, including managers from first-level positions to top-level positions, as well as subordinate employees working under the supervision of first-level managers, possessing the technological know-how of Industry 4.0. The data were collected through a matrix-based survey questionnaire that was based on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree.” The process of data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics.

Findings

The findings obtained by this research work showed a significant relationship among the five core pillars of Industry 4.0 and the organizational performance of Pakistan's retail industry. Besides, the obtained findings provided preliminary evidence that Industry 4.0's disruptive technologies, particularly, 3D printing, big data analytics, cloud computing, IoT and robotics, could help Pakistan's retail industry solve various problems and challenges, such as meager revenues, increased expenses and unorganized systems.

Originality/value

The present study extended the theoretical body of knowledge through studying and examining Industry 4.0's five crucial factors that significantly contribute to the service sector, particularly, the retail industry, of the big emerging markets (BEM) economies, including Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the frictional performance of reciprocating pair with high velocity by using hydrodynamic lubrication principle and fish scale textured piston model.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the idea of function characteristic approximation and coordinate change, a mathematical representation model of imitating fish scale texture pit section is established. According to the principle of dynamic pressure lubrication of the textured fluid, a three-dimensional numerical model of flow field for fish scale texture is established without considering cavitation. Numerical analysis of the model carp scale texture unit by orthogonal experimental design and FLUENT software is carried out.

Findings

Effects of fish scale pit texture on friction properties for a reciprocating pair piston surface with high velocity (impact piston) are acquired. Effects of texture characterization parameters and flow rate on the surface friction performance for impact piston are found. Effects of different characteristic parameters combination of imitating fish scale texture on friction performance for impact piston surface are obtained.

Originality/value

The model is an effective tool to study the friction and wear of reciprocating pair with high velocity. The effects of fish scale textured piston pair supply a theory lead to design the reciprocating pair with better friction performance.

Abstract

A tentative idea of introducing rotating electromagnetic force for dynamic balancing is presented in the paper. A method of generating the force is put forward, the force generated has adjustable magnitude, speed and phase angle. Working characteristics of the force are analyzed. Phase windings fed with half sine currents are designed to restrain pulsation of the force vector in space. Simulation results of a model indicate that a rotating force vector can be obtained by selecting a proper number of phases simultaneously fed with currents, which is able to meet the needs of ordinary engineering problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the creep properties of Sn‐0.7Cu composite solder joints reinforced with optimal nano‐sized Ag particles in order to improve the creep performance of lead‐free solder joints by a composite approach.

Design/methodology/approach

The composite approach has been considered as an effective method to improve the creep performance of solder joints. Nano‐sized Ag reinforcing particles were incorporated into Sn‐0.7Cu solder by mechanically mixing. A systematic creep study was carried out on nano‐composite solder joints reinforced with optimal nano‐sized Ag particles and compared with Sn‐0.7Cu solder joints at different temperatures and stress levels. A steady‐state creep constitutive equation for nano‐composite solder joints containing the best volume reinforcement was established in this study. Microstructural features of solder joints were analyzed to help determine their deformation mechanisms during creep.

Findings

The creep activation energies and stress exponents of Ag particle‐enhanced Sn‐0.7Cu lead‐free based composite solder joints were higher than those of matrix solder joints under the same stress and temperature. Thus, the creep properties of nano‐composite solder joints are better than those of Sn‐0.7Cu solder joints.

Originality/value

The findings indicated that nano‐sized Ag reinforcing particles could effectively improve the creep properties of solder joints. A new steady‐state creep constitutive equation of nano‐composite solder joints was established. Deformation mechanisms of Sn‐0.7Cu solder and nano‐composite solder joints during creep were determined.

Abstract

Purpose – This chapter explores ways in which urban women in China balance work and family demands, as the state's protective and welfare functions in post-Mao reform are increasingly being replaced by market forces, and the chapter examines how urban women's enactment of work and family roles are shaped by changing workplaces as well as by their personal and family circumstances. The purpose is to understand the impact of marketization on gender configuration through the lens of the work-family nexus.

Research design – Data come from in-depth interviews conducted between 2005 and 2007 with 115 married women in four large cities. For analytical purposes, the informants were divided into three groups: stay-at-home moms, family-orientated working women, and work/career-oriented women.

Findings – Although market reform may create opportunities for some women to enhance their personal lives, as a consequence of workers' loss of the safety net and welfare benefits, the neglect of women's reproductive work, and the commercialization of child care and child education, it has generated, for many women, much role conflict between work and family. Work/career-oriented women are able to actively engage in market activities precisely because they are protected still by the state, can afford commercial services of domestic tasks, or have strong support from their extended families.

Originality/value – Women's varying role orientations reflect more their strategies of coping with structural changes than their mere adherence to certain gender ideologies.

Social implications – The chapter calls for curbing unbridled market forces and restoring public services so as to create a family/women-friendly work and social environment.

Abstract

Purpose

The stock indexes are an important issue for investors, and in this paper good trading strategies will be aimed to be adopted according to the accurate prediction of the stock indexes to chase high returns.

Design/methodology/approach

To avoid the problem of insufficient financial data for daily stock indexes prediction during modeling, a data augmentation method based on time scale transformation (DATT) was introduced. After that, a new deep learning model which combined DATT and NGRU (DATT-nested gated recurrent units (NGRU)) was proposed for stock indexes prediction. The proposed models and their competitive models were used to test the stock indexes prediction and simulated trading in five stock markets of China and the United States.

Findings

The experimental results demonstrated that both NGRU and DATT-NGRU outperformed the other recurrent neural network (RNN) models in the daily stock indexes prediction.

Originality/value

A novel RNN with NGRU and data augmentation is proposed. It uses the nested structure to increase the depth of the deep learning model.

Abstract

Boundary element method(BEM) is applied to computation of 3D eddy current fields due to heavy current leads in a 360MVA/500kV power transformer. To improve numerical accuracy, triangle polar coodinate mapping and addition‐substraction technique are chosen to evaluate singular integrals. The effects of different shields in cover and arrangements of heavy current leads on eddy current loss and its density are analyzed.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital start-ups have limited resources. With the demands of rapid growth, digital start-ups need to rely on their ability to explore external knowledge and exploit it into swift innovation. Developing absorptive capacity is an alternative to overcome this difficulty. This study aims to demonstrate how the potential and realized an increase in absorptive capacity enables organizations to innovate moderated by structural ambidexterity. Empirical evidence places more emphasis on the impact of absorptive capacity on innovation but still leaves the “black-box” question of innovation and how potential absorptive capacity (PACAP) can achieve realized absorptive capacity (RACAP).

Design/methodology/approach

This study tests, with a structural equation model, samples collected from 143 digital start-ups in Indonesia.

Findings

The finding of this study suggests that PACAP influences the ability to innovate only if RACAP mediates it and structural ambidexterity positively moderates the relationship between these two variables.

Research limitations/implications

First, this study uses digital start-up organizations as respondents. Second, this study explores the role of the structural ambidexterity that moderates the relationship between PACAP and RACAP manifested in digital start-ups organizations that are identical to temporary companies with limited resources. Third, digital start-ups have a fast-growth life cycle, unlike regular companies. Finally, the validated scale is based on data collected entirely from digital start-ups located in Indonesia, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other industry contexts.

Practical implications

Start-ups suffer from the ability to innovate that increases their propensity to fail. They overcome this failure by increasing the absorptive capacity of the founding team to improve their ability to innovate. Because of limited resources available at digital start-ups, the flexibility of their management style can overcome these barriers, allowing the pursuit of both knowledge exploration and exploitation in a balanced way.

Originality/value

Most of the studies explained that the ability to innovate comes from absorptive capacity. In fact, they do not explore PACAP and RACAP and their relationships. Moreover, the studies also indicated that the contextual ambidexterity moderated PACAP and RACAP. Meanwhile, digital start-ups in this study revealed that structural ambidexterity with two dimensions, i.e. shared value, and behavioral integration, enables and positively moderates the relationship between PACAP and RACAP.
