Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to establish a bio-inspired controller for realizing the bounding gait of a quadruped robot system presented in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The bio-inspired controller is divided into three levels to mimic the biological patterns of animals. First, the high-level sub-controller is equivalent to the cerebellum, which could plan and control the motion of animals. Second, the effect of the middle-level sub-controller corresponds to the central nervous system. The central pattern generators in the spine generate the stable and cyclic signals as the fundamental rhythm for periodic motion of the leg and spine joints. Third, the low-level sub-controller is equal to the end effector, which adopts the simple proportional-derivative (PD) control to realize the specific motion trajectory of the legs and spine.

Findings

Combined with the stability criterion presented previously and the delayed feedback control method, the bounding gait of the cheetah virtual prototype could be actuated and stabilized by the bio-inspired controller. Moreover, the bio-inspired controller is applied to realize the bounding gait of an SQBot, which is a quadruped robot with a spine joint. Meanwhile, the validity and practicability of the bio-inspired controller for the control of quadruped robot have been verified against different forward velocities.

Originality/value

The bio-inspired controller and bionic quadruped robot system are instructive for the designing and actuating of the real quadruped robot.

Abstract

Purpose

The prediction of by-product gas is an important guarantee for the full utilization of resources. The purpose of this research is to predict gas consumption to provide a basis for gas dispatch and reduce the production cost of enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a new method using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and the back propagation neural network is proposed. Unfortunately, this method does not achieve the ideal prediction. Further, using the advantages of long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network for long-term dependence, a prediction method based on EEMD and LSTM is proposed. In this model, the gas consumption series is decomposed into several intrinsic mode functions and a residual term (r(t)) by EEMD. Second, each component is predicted by LSTM. The predicted values of all components are added together to get the final prediction result.

Findings

The results show that the root mean square error is reduced to 0.35%, the average absolute error is reduced to 1.852 and the R-squared is reached to 0.963.

Originality/value

A new gas consumption prediction method is proposed in this paper. The production data collected in the actual production process is non-linear, unstable and contains a lot of noise. But the EEMD method has the unique superiority in the analysis data aspect and may solve these questions well. The prediction of gas consumption is the result of long-term training and needs a lot of prior knowledge. Relying on LSTM can solve the problem of long-term dependence.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the moderating effects of individual social engagement on the effectiveness of freemium strategies in digital content platforms.

Design/methodology/approach

This study involved conducting a randomized field experiment with 74,758 consumers on a prominent e-book platform in China, comparing the effects of offering the first 50 chapters for free against no free content. Additionally, a causal random forest machine learning algorithm was applied to analyze data and optimize strategies based on individual social engagement levels.

Findings

This study indicates freemium strategies on digital content platforms can increase consumer willingness to pay but may reduce social community participation. These effects are moderated by consumers' prior social engagement, with excessive interaction leading to diminishing returns.

Practical implications

The study offers actionable insights for digital content managers, showing how tailored freemium strategies can effectively balance consumer engagement and revenue generation. The findings suggest that platforms can significantly enhance profitability by moderating free content offerings based on detailed analysis of consumer engagement histories.

Originality/value

This study enhances the understanding of freemium strategies by showcasing their dual impact on consumer willingness to pay and social engagement, and detailing the complex, non-linear effects of individual social engagement, which challenges the traditional linear assumptions in existing literature. Additionally, it provides insights for implementing mixed marketing strategies on digital platforms, where multiple strategies often interact, guiding the effective management of these complexities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine interrelations of the team environment factors of trust and affiliation and the motivation factors of perceived reciprocal benefits and importance of enjoyment to determine how they influence knowledge sharing within loose-linked global virtual teams.

Design/methodology/approach

The study involved 115 business students from three large universities located in the USA, China and Peru being assigned to global virtual teams of between three and four members in one phase and between four and seven members in a second phase. Students were required to work in virtual teams using telecommunication tools to complete assigned cases.

Findings

Trust, reciprocal benefits and enjoyment are significantly related to positive attitude toward knowledge sharing. Positive attitude, enjoyment, age, nationality and computer experience are positively related to knowledge sharing behavior. Affiliation is not found to significantly affect positive knowledge sharing attitude. Gender is not related to knowledge sharing behavior.

Practical implications

Understanding how trust, affiliation and motivation influence positive attitude and knowledge sharing behavior can assist managers in developing intervention strategies that improve team environments to support knowledge sharing behavior.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the advancement of theory by extending the current knowledge sharing research to virtual team environments with diverse cultural backgrounds and by considering both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation factors, including the importance of enjoyment in loose-linked environments of global virtual teams.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to design the limited number of random working cycle as a warranty term and propose two types of warranties, which can help manufacturers to ensure the product reliability during the warranty period. By extending the proposed warranty to the consumer's post-warranty maintenance model, besides the authors investigate two kinds of random maintenance policies to sustain the post-warranty reliability, i.e. random replacement first and random replacement last. By integrating depreciation expense depending on working time, the cost rate is constructed for each random maintenance policy and some special cases are provided by discussing parameters in cost rates. Finally, sensitivities on both the proposed warranty and random maintenance policies are analyzed in numerical experiments.

Design/methodology/approach

The working cycle of products can be monitored by advanced sensors and measuring technologies. By monitoring the working cycle, manufacturers can design warranty policies to ensure product reliability performance and consumers can model the post-warranty maintenance to sustain the post-warranty reliability. In this article, the authors design a limited number of random working cycles as a warranty term and propose two types of warranties, which can help manufacturers to ensure the product reliability performance during the warranty period. Findings

It is shown that the manufacturer can control the warranty cost by limiting number of random working cycle. For the consumer, when the number of random working cycle is designed as a greater warranty limit, the cost rate can be reduced while the post-warranty period can't be lengthened.

Originality/value

The contribution of this article can be highlighted in two key aspects: (1) the authors investigate early warranties to ensure reliability performance of the product which executes successively projects at random working cycles; (2) by integrating random working cycles into the post-warranty period, the authors is the first to investigate random maintenance policy to sustain the post-warranty reliability from the consumer's perspective, which seldom appears in the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain the combination of working parameters suitable for pulsating negative pressure shale shaker through simulation, which is conducive to efficient recovery of clean drilling fluid and relatively dry cuttings.

Design/methodology/approach

Shale shaker is still one of the main equipment in solid–solid and solid–liquid separation processes in drilling industry. This research is based on a new drilling fluids circulation treatment device, namely pulsating negative pressure shale shaker. In this work, a numerical study of particle flow and separation in the pulsating negative pressure shale shaker is carried out by coupling computational fluid dynamics/discrete element method (CFD-DEM). The effect of vibration parameters and negative pressure parameters are studied in terms of conveyance velocity and percent through screen.

Findings

The results show that, conveyance velocity of particle is mainly affected by vibration parameters, negative pressure in pulsating form can effectively prevent cuttings from sticking to the screen. Vibration parameters and pulsating airflow velocity peak have great influence on percent through screen, while vibration frequency and screen slope have influence on the time when the percent through screen reaches stability.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors put forward a new kind of drilling waste fluid treatment equipment, and focused on the study of particle movement law. The results have important guiding significance for the selection of structural design parameters and rational use of equipment. In addition, the new device provides a new idea for solid–liquid separation method, which is one of the hot topics in current research.

Abstract

Purpose

First, the contributions of spatial characteristics to microclimate were analyzed. And the results from mobile measurements were compared to those from fixed measurements to examine accuracy of mobile method. Air temperature and physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) profiles were plotted to explore the impacts of the spatial characteristics of that urban square and local street.

Design/methodology/approach

This research investigates the effects of urban canyons and landscape on air temperature and outdoor thermal comfort in an open square in Seoul, Korea, a city of diverse thermal environments. Mobile field measurements were carried out to obtain local meteorological data based on higher spatial resolution.

Findings

On a day in October under clear sky, air temperature and PET differences of up to 1.77 °C and 9.6 °C were observed at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. These were mainly from the impact of shading effects caused by surrounding obstacles. The current layout and volume of vegetation in the square seemed not effective for reducing air temperature and improving thermal comfort, which needs further study.

Originality/value

The authors tested a way to investigate time delay when using mobile measurements by correcting measured local data using adjacent meteorological observatory data. The findings of and limitations on mobile station-based field measurement and analysis are discussed herein.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanism of efficient sputum excretion from the distal lung by using a tessellationally distal lung model with alveolar pores.

Design/methodology/approach

First, a two-dimensional tessellational composite structure of the bronchus, alveoli and alveolar pores (Kohn pore) is constructed with the tessellational splitting and fusion of regular hexagonal elements. Then, the level set method is used to study the effects of alveolar pores and their sizes, expiratory cycles and respiratory intensity.

Findings

The existence of alveolar pores is the prerequisite for sputum excretion, and there is an optimal size of alveolar pores for sputum excretion. Strong asymmetric respiration can break the reversibility of the flow at a low Reynolds number and causes significant net displacement of sputum. The expiratory cycle is negatively correlated with the net displacement of sputum. The respiratory intensity is positively correlated with the net displacement of sputum.

Originality/value

This research is helpful for understanding the complex sputum excretion process in diseases, such as pneumonia, and developing corresponding adjuvant therapy.
