Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to provide new empirical evidence on the non-performing loan (NPL) determinants of the EU conventional banks, in the context of macroeconomic factors, dimensions of country governance and bank-specific characteristics.
Design/methodology/approach
The panel data sets of 1,053 conventional banks were obtained over the period of 2007-2016. The Hodrick–Prescott filter was adopted to extract business cycle and credit cycle from real gross domestic product and credit to the private non-financial sector, correspondingly. System-generalised methods of moment was then used to identify the significant determinants of NPL.
Findings
The empirical results reveal that NPL is primarily driven positively by lagged-one NPL and risk profile. In consonance with the skimping hypothesis, NPL has a significant positive relationship with the cost efficiency. The empirical finding of the business cycle coincides with the Austrian business cycle theory. Particularly, NPL is relatively low during rapid economic growth of credit-sourced business boom. Whereas, business bust happens when credit creation runs its course and is associated with high NPL. This paper encapsulates that NPL is driven by not only macroeconomic factors and bank-specific characteristics but also the dimensions of country governance.
Practical implications
Policymakers should introduce policies that are geared towards proper dimensions of country governance.
Originality/value
The novelty of this research does not rely on the multidimensions of NPL determinants but on the disentanglement of the conventional banks with dual identity (i.e. Islamic banks, cooperative banks and ethical banks). It considers business cycle, credit cycle and previous NPL as the potential determinants.

Abstract
Purpose
There are over 300,000 male migrant workers in Singapore. Around 600 major workplace injuries are reported in Singapore each year, mainly in the manufacturing and construction injuries. Migrant workers who are affected by workplace injuries often face many challenges, including not being able to work and thus may be repatriated to their home countries, which affects their financial status and that of their families, whom they support. This research aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of injured migrant workers in Singapore, towards disability and vocational rehabilitation.
Design/methodology/approach
Fifteen male migrant workers, from Bangladesh, China and India, who had acquired disabling injuries in their workplaces in Singapore, were identified through purposive sampling. They were interviewed by a male interviewer, either in Mandarin Chinese or with the assistance of interpreters for Bengali-English and Tamil-English. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated to English, then analysed thematically.
Findings
The interviewees generally had a pessimistic outlook on their disability, which often impacted negatively on their self-worth and familial relationships. Many of them also had little knowledge of vocational rehabilitation and had not yet seriously considered future job prospects.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no similar studies exploring the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of injured migrant workers in Singapore towards disability and vocational rehabilitation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the teaching performance of Turkish Business Schools (BSs). It also aims to determine the degree of importance of factors affecting the teaching performance of Turkish BSs. The final objective is to test the functionality and applicability of the model.
Design/methodology/approach
This study presents a ranking approach based on grey relational analysis (GRA). While evaluating the BSs, data were collected for 19 Turkish BSs in terms of five main criteria such as OSS score; Number of faculty members; Number of students per faculty member; the mean of KPSS score; and the standard deviation of KPSS score. In the analysis, three weighted methods were integrated into the GRA in order to weight the criteria.
Findings
According to this result, the main factor influencing the teaching performance of Turkish BSs is the OSS score. This study can also confirm that the results obtained from the ranking orders using the proposed methods are reliable and these results can help decision makers to identify the best alternative.
Research limitations/implications
In order to provide benchmarking data more effectively, in future, it would be helpful to collect data from both foundation and state universities with a research focus. Moreover, as an interesting suggestion for future research, fuzzy environment may be further integrated into the framework of GRA.
Originality/value
In contrast to prior research, this study makes comparisons based on the scores of national exams instead of different bibliometric indicators. Furthermore, there are no studies which have used GRA and these weighted methods as combined in education sector.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the selected antecedents (i.e. supervisor support and organizational justice) and outcomes (i.e. voice behavior and career satisfaction) of work engagement (WENG).
Design/methodology/approach
To gauge the aforesaid effects via structural equation modeling, the current study used data collected from hospitality and tourism academicians at public universities in Turkey.
Findings
The proposed model is viable. Specifically, WENG mediates the impacts of supervisor support and organizational justice on voice behavior and career satisfaction.
Research limitations/implications
Using longitudinal data in future research would make it possible to draw causal inferences. Testing research productivity as a criterion variable in future papers would enable the researchers to ferret about whether WENG would mediate the effects of supervisor support and organizational justice on research productivity.
Originality/value
Evidence about the factors affecting employees' WENG is still meager. Especially, there is a need for research about the factors that may affect academicians' WENG at universities. Research findings present valuable implications for tourism and hospitality educational institutions.
