Abstract

Purpose

Unsatisfactory level of construction materials quality has been a persistent problem for companies in construction. This study aims to describe the application of the Six Sigma methodology for improving the tensile strength in a Chinese reinforcement material manufacturing company.

Design/methodology/approach

Six Sigma-based framework of define-measure-analyse-improve-control (DMAIC) methodology is adopted in this case study. During different stages, quality problems and critical factors are identified to improve the low performance of tensile strength and thixotropy of the impregnating resin.

Findings

The results provide solid evidence that how Six Sigma can be successfully applied in reinforcement material manufacturing. Results showed that vacuum degree, reaction temperature and stirring rate are significant factors on tensile strength. Control plans for continuous improvements are suggested and implemented. Our study found that managerial assurance activities such as verification were less developed than equipment-related control activities. Besides, data management required further elaboration on integrated data and information systematically, thereby to enable the company to make informed decisions and to support continuous improvement.

Originality/value

This study contributes to show a potential area in which Six Sigma DMAIC approach can promote to improve the tensile strength of impregnating resin. This case can prompt managers of the company to apply Six Sigma method to address complicated problems in other reinforcement material processes. Companies of construction and their suppliers can refer to this study when improving their manufacturing process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present the implementation of Six Sigma in a solenoid valve manufacturing company in China. The project aims to reduce the solenoid valve defects, decrease the cost of poor quality, increase customer satisfaction and improve the long-term profitability of Company B.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper follows the Six Sigma methodology: DMAIC (define, measure, analyse, improve and control) principle of case study research. Hysteresis, the key characteristic of a solenoid valve, is the main chance for quality improvement. This paper emphasizes the solution to the hysteresis problem. During DMAIC phases, the critical factors that affect hysteresis performance are identified for continuous quality improvement of solenoid valve manufacturing.

Findings

The implementation of Six Sigma leads to a great quality improvement for the company studied in this paper. Control plans are made for good hysteresis performance. As a result, the first pass yield of solenoid valves has increased from 60% to 99.64%. The key hysteresis of the solenoid valve has shown a better performance.

Originality/value

This study presents a solenoid valve industrial quality improvement case that demonstrates how Six Sigma and DMAIC methodology can be applied to reduce defects and achieve quality improvement in Company B. This study can be referred to for managers and engineers to undertake quality improvement programs.

Abstract

The cultural tourism industry, which has subtly met the needs and solved the major problem of the current age, is a new growth point for the current city economic growth. Therefore, its position in the industrial structure system will be increasingly improved. The development of the cultural tourism industry also provides an important opportunity for the renewal and re-engineering of urban space. For the current urban space construction crisis needs the integration of historical and cultural elements urgently while the development of the cultural tourism industry itself happened to need the city to provide the necessary carrying space and incubation carrier urgently as well. Thus this research discusses the construction of urban visual planning system and the specific implementation path from the perspective of the development of cultural tourism industry.
