Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of environmental concern, perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE), green self-identity and social influence on Danish Generation Z consumers’ green purchase intention across three product categories: food, clothing and mobile phones.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected through convenience sampling, asking undergraduate students in a quantitative data analysis class at the University of Southern Denmark to share a link to the online survey via mail and through their social media platforms. This study includes 287 usable cases. Structural equation modeling (AMOS) was used to test the suggested relationships.
Findings
The results show that environmental concern, PCE, green self-identity and social influence positively relate to Danish Generation Z consumers’ green purchase intentions. However, results also suggest that the influence of the different factors varies across product categories.
Practical implications
The results show that marketers must refine their understanding of what guides green consumption, as the factors leading to green purchase intention vary across product categories. Therefore, practitioners need a deeper understanding of their specific category. The results offer insight into food, clothing and mobile phones.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies investigating the antecedents to green purchase intentions across product categories.

Purpose
Aquaculture is, an important animal farming activity, and fish welfare has recently become an important issue in the EU. Driving forces behind the promotion of fish welfare are demands from retailers and consumers. Given this background, it is the main objective of this paper in a Danish setting to investigate the willingness of consumers to pay for farmed rainbow trout with a quality label certifying good fish welfare. It also aims to describe consumers’ perception and consumption of farmed fish and their beliefs about fish welfare.
Design/methodology/approach
A contingent valuation approach was used to evaluate consumers’ willingness to pay for fish welfare, using an open‐ended elicitation technique. To determine the factors that may influence consumers’ willingness to pay for fish welfare the binomial logit model was used. Data were collected from an online survey of Danish consumers in the spring of 2009, sample size 1,000.
Findings
Of the sample, 48 percent were on average willing to pay 25 percent extra for welfare rainbow trout. Primarily women with a longer education, belonging to higher income households are willing to pay extra, also older consumers are more willing to pay more than younger consumers. Consumers who emphasize eco‐friendly production of welfare fish, freshness, and animal welfare also tend to be willing to pay extra.
Originality/value
While much literature has addressed animal welfare and willingness to pay for it, only a few studies have specifically considered consumers’ perception of fish welfare and their willingness to pay for welfare fish.

Purpose
Voluntary carbon offsets have the potential to contribute to reduce carbon emission and thereby meet the national and international target of carbon emission. However, the public support for such scheme in the energy sector is unclear. The purpose of this paper was to invest whether and why residential energy consumers are willing to pay to offset the CO2 emission from electricity consumption.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected using a self-administrated online questionnaire. A sample of size 1,022 respondents with useable questionnaires was received. Contingent valuation method is used to measure the willingness to pay (WTP) for carbon offset. Finally, the ordered logit model is used in modeling willing to pay for carbon offset.
Findings
The results show that there is significant support from residential energy consumers to offset their CO2 emission from electricity consumption. The WTP is motivated by consumers’ perceptions toward carbon offset, moral obligation and individual’s social-demographic backgrounds.
Originality/value
This paper contributes a new insight on whether and why residential energy consumers would be willing to pay to offset carbon emission from electricity consumption.

Purpose
Knowledge often is the fundament for strategic competitive advantage. Thus, it is highly relevant to understand better how knowledge is transferred from one generation to the next in family businesses. The purpose of this paper is to link the competitive advantage realisation in family businesses to the success of transferring strategically valuable knowledge in different business environments to the next generation.
Design/methodology/approach
Building on the contingency model of family business succession (Royer et al., 2008) knowledge transfer in family businesses from different cultures is investigated in this paper. From a resource-oriented and transaction cost inspired perspective two family businesses with a similar industry background from China and Europe are compared regarding knowledge transfer in the context of family firm succession taking into account the respective transaction atmosphere.
Findings
Different successions for two long-lived family firms are illustrated in a systematic fashion: based on the theoretical elements suggested both cases are described to get insights into the usefulness of the theoretical reasoning developed. On the basis of these, the cases are compared with each other and conclusions for both cases are drawn. Implications for theory and practice as well as avenues for future research are sketched.
Originality/value
The focus of the current study is to gain more insight into long-lived family businesses by comparing two cases over a period of more than 200 years with regard to strategically relevant resources as well as the underlying transaction atmospheres. Implications for family firms depending on the resource types and transaction atmosphere are discussed.

Shadows, the common phenomena in most outdoor scenes, bring many problems in practical image processing. Shadow detection and removal, especial in uncalibrated outdoor image, is still a difficult problem. The purpose of this paper is to detect and to remove shadows in single outdoor image based on retinex theory.
Design/methodology/approach
The shadow extraction algorithm originates from a simple idea that the human‐vision‐based retinex has the natural ability to enhance the shadow regions of an image no matter it is penumbrae or umbrae. Shadows are detected by comparing the retinex‐enhanced images with original images in the paper. The shadow removal algorithm in the paper deals with the shadow regions and non‐shadow regions in the images separately using the retinex enhancement algorithm. Through adding smooth light forcibly to shadow edges and introducing shadow edge masks, the authors reduce the effects of shadow edges in shadow removal processing.
Findings
Some real single outdoor images with the umbra regions and those with penumbra regions are both experimented in the paper. Experimental results validate the feasibility of the approach.
Originality/value
The approach proposed here does not use any special prior knowledge and assumptions. The feasibility of this method is testified for detecting and removing both penumbrae and umbrae in the outdoor images.

Abstract
Purpose
To examine “universal service” as a policy objective in post‐WTO accession Chinese telecommunications and analyze the challenges of the Chinese telecommunications system in defining and promoting public service ethos in a country that is marked by staggering disparities.
Design/methodology/approach
A range of media, academic, industry, and policy discourses on “universal service” and a broader notion of “public service,” together with recent government efforts in promoting “universal service,” are examined and assessed to develop an analysis of the uneven nature of China's telecommunications development and reveal the dynamics of “universal service” policy formation, as well as the impetuses and impediments in developing any notion of public service telecommunications in China.
Findings
Public service issues in China need to be situated within a continuing process of uneven development which comprises dimensions other than residential telephone access. Although the ultimate policy goal appears to develop a nationally accessible telecommunications infrastructure as the basis of a unified national economy, this overall objective is beset by conflicts and contingent on the dynamics of elite and popular struggles over and beyond telecommunications development. Despite the spectacular expansion in telephone access, pragmatic concessions to dominant power groups, rather than a principled commitment to “universal service,” let alone efforts to define the social functions of telecommunications in more democratic ways, have shaped the development of China's telecommunications.
Originality/value
The development of China's telecommunications infrastructure offers lessons both as to the likelihood of successfully establishing an integrated national economy, and the role of public service in that context. However, the Chinese telecommunications policy field remains extremely fluid.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to report small-signal parameter extraction and simulation of enhanced dual-channel dual-material gate AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) for the first time for the characterization of a device in microwave range of frequency.
Design/methodology/approach
For parameter extraction, a standard and well-known direct parameter extraction methodology is applied. Extrinsic elements of small-signal circuit model are extracted from measured S-parameters obtained using pinch-off cold field effect transistor (FET) biasing in the first step at a low frequency range and at a higher frequency range in the second step to ensure higher extraction accuracy. Intrinsic elements are extracted from intrinsic Y-parameters that are obtained after de-embedding all the extrinsic parasitic elements of the device. Figure of merits of radio frequency are also derived from the measured results and S-parameters of the proposed device.
Findings
Small signal parameters of the proposed device circuit model are extracted using the standard direct parameter extraction technique. Analysis of microwave figure of merits for device include maximum oscillation frequency, cut-off frequency, current gain, transducer power gain, available power gain, maximum stable gain, transconductance, drain conductance, stern stability factor and time delay.
Practical implications
The paper bridges the gaps between theory and experimental practices by validating extracted results with reported results of structurally matching devices.
Originality/value
An enhanced device structure investigated for small signal parameters incorporates field plate over dual metal engineered gate to provide better electric field uniformity, effective suppression of short channel effect, reduction in current collapse, improvement in carrier transport efficiency and enhancement in drain current capabilities.
