Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to apply, for the first time, the authors' newly developed perturbation iteration method to heat transfer problems. The effectiveness of the new method in nonlinear heat transfer problems will be tested.
Design/methodology/approach
Nonlinear heat transfer problems are solved by perturbation iteration method. They are also solved by the well‐known technique variational iteration method in the literature.
Findings
It is found that perturbation iteration solutions converge faster to the numerical solutions. More accurate results can be achieved with this new method for nonlinear heat transfer problems.
Research limitations/implications
A few iterations are actually sufficient. Further iterations need symbolic packages to calculate the solutions.
Practical implications
This new technique can practically be applied to many heat and flow problems.
Originality/value
The new perturbation iteration technique is successfully implemented to nonlinear heat transfer problems. Results show good agreement with the direct numerical simulations and the method performs better than the existing variational iteration method.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a tri-optimization approach to optimize design solutions regarding the building shape and envelope properties considering their implications on thermal comfort, visual comfort and building energy consumption (EN). The optimization approach has been applied to obtain the optimal design solutions in five typical cities across all climatic regions of China.
Design/methodology/approach
The method comprises a tri-optimization process with nine main steps to optimize the three objectives (thermal comfort, visual comfort and building EN). The design variables considered are four types of building shape (pyramid, rectangular, cylindrical and dome shape) and different envelope properties (insulation thickness [INS] of external walls/roof, window type [WT] and window-to-envelop surface area ratio [WESR]). The optimization is performed by using the Taguchi and constraint limit method.
Findings
The results show that the optimal design solutions for all climatic regions favor cylindrical shape and triple-layer low-E glazing window. The highest insulation level of 150 mm is preferred in three climatic regions, and the INS of 90 mm is preferred in the other two climate regions. In total, 10% WESR is preferred in all climatic regions, except the mild region. When the constraint limit of lighting intensity requirement by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is applied, the rectangular shape building is the optimal solution for those with 10% WESR.
Research limitations/implications
The method proposed in the paper is innovative in that it optimizes three different objectives simultaneously in building design with better accuracy and calculation speed.
Practical implications
Building designers can easily follow the proposed design guide in their practice which effectively bridges the gap between theory and practice. The optimal design solutions can provide a more comfortable living environment and yet less EN, which can help achieve the sustainability requirement of green buildings.
Social implications
The solutions presented in the paper can serve as a useful guide for practical building designers which creates economic and commercial impact. In addition, the theory and practical examples of the study can be used by building regulators to improve the energy-efficient building design standard in China.
Originality/value
The research is the first attempt that adopts tri-optimization approach to generate the optimal solutions for building shape and envelope design. The tri-optimization approach can be used by building designers to generate satisfactory design solutions from the architectural viewpoint and meanwhile to find combinations of the building shape and envelope properties that lead to design solutions with optimal building performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper is intended to investigate the economic, organizational and social factors affecting the receipt of advance payment by greenhouse vegetable producers from commission agents operating in the wholesale market.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were gathered through questionnaire forms developed for this specific purpose through face-to-face interviews with 180 producers growing greenhouse vegetables in the central district and Serik, Antalya in the Western Mediterranean Region of Turkey. A logistic regression model was employed to analyse the factors affecting the likelihood of greenhouse vegetable growers getting advance from commission agents.
Findings
A good financial status of enterprises producing greenhouse vegetables and the fact that their production input needs are met by cooperatives reduce their dependence on commission agents, thereby increasing their bargaining power when selling their products. Since producers can readily meet their need for the capital required for the vegetable production process from commission agents, they do not prefer to borrow from lending institutions making agricultural loans with requirements such as collateral. The fact that greenhouse vegetable farmers receive technical and market information and advice from commission agents strengthens their relationship with them.
Originality/value
It is the first study that evaluates in detail the financial aspect of the relationships between producers and commission agents in the greenhouse vegetables wholesale market. It contributes significantly to agricultural policymakers regarding the functioning of the greenhouse vegetable market, and in particular, the regulations on agricultural loans for production processes.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to fill the lack of quantitative studies of user preferences in quasi-public spaces to observe the use of quasi-public spaces by questioning the contemporary needs of urban communities and to develop design strategies accordingly.
Design/methodology/approach
Within the scope of this study, public space design elements affecting users' preferences in the quasi-public spaces of the Podium Park shopping center in Bursa, Turkey were evaluated. By considering the spatial characteristics of the study area, 4 main and 15 subcriteria were determined and utilized by analytic hierarchy process (AHP). These criteria were evaluated by experts and locals with a participatory approach.
Findings
According to the obtained results, “events” (S2), “sun/shade” (C2), “safety” (P3) and “planting” (U4) subcriteria were determined as the vital elements for quasi-public spaces.
Originality/value
Although the concept of quasi-public space has been discussed for nearly 30 years, it has been observed that there are no quantitative studies to determine the criteria of user preferences in these open spaces in the literature. This study is the first quantitative research for user preferences in quasi-public spaces and there is no previous study on this subject and study area in Turkey.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of hydration with oral water on non-stress test (NST).
Design/methodology/approach
The study was conducted as single-blinded and randomized controlled. Healthy and outpatient 32- to 40-week pregnant women who were aged 19 and older were included in the study. Intervention group pregnant women (n = 66) drank 500 ccs of water before the NST, and no attempt was made to the control group (n = 66). The NST parameters of the groups with fetal heart rate (FHR), variability, acceleration, deceleration, reactivity and nonreactivity were evaluated.
Findings
Both groups were found to be similar in terms of their descriptive characteristics and variables related to pregnancy (p > 0.05). The median FHR was 130.0 in the intervention group, 140.0 in the control group (p < 0.001), and the median number of the acceleration was 6.0 in the intervention group and 4.0 in the control group (p < 0.001). In terms of the median number of decelerations, the groups were similar (p > 0.05).
Originality/value
It was found that hydration with oral water had an effect on NST parameters of FHR and the number of accelerations. However, it was observed that the FHR was within the normal range in both groups. It was thought that it tended to increase the number of accelerations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to account for the direct effect of ethical leadership on the sustainability of agro-allied firms and the moderating effect of environmental dynamism on ethical leadership–organisational sustainability relation.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 215 managers participated in the survey, which covered agro-allied firms from the 6 geo-political zones of the country, Nigeria. Partial least square structural equation model was conducted with the aid of SmartPLSv3.
Findings
The result confirms that ethical leadership positively affects the sustainability of firms in the agro-allied sector and also supports that environmental dynamism strengthens the relation between ethical leadership and sustainability of firms.
Originality/value
The study advances ethical leadership literature through a nuanced examination of its relevance in the agricultural sector, while also validating the integrative social contract theory as a theoretical lens used in exploring the relationship. The specific focus on “ethical” leadership and a specific sector of the economy – agro allied firms is a new ground by not just looking at leadership but the ethical consideration part in relation to a specific industry where competition is a key driver to management/leadership performance.
