Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to describe the involvement of the local community in initiating and carrying out cultural heritage-safeguarding efforts through digital spaces. This study also describes the collaboration between one local community and a library to preserve cultural heritage.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a literature review to analyze and discuss the involvement and initiatives of the local community in preserving cultural heritage. This paper also describes how one local community uses digital spaces to direct preservation efforts.
Findings
Digital spaces offer opportunities for young people to participate in cultural heritage preservation efforts in unique and captivating ways. Examples of effective strategies are conducting online discussions, disseminating information and promoting events about cultural heritage through digital platforms (social media and websites), and carrying out electronic clipping.
Originality/value
This study supports the active involvement of local community in participating in the preservation of cultural heritage as well as raising awareness to support the preservation of cultural heritage through digital spaces. This study promotes inclusivity and concludes that local community plays a vital role in safeguarding cultural heritage.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore opportunities for using social media technology to support the awareness in the digital environment of ancient manuscript preservation, as well as to share Indonesian libraries’ experiences in leveraging those media.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper relies on a literature review to discuss the implementation of social media platforms for preserving and raising awareness of cultural heritage in the form of ancient manuscripts. This paper also observes how some Indonesian libraries use their social media accounts to preserve and raise awareness of ancient manuscript collections.
Findings
Social media technology provides opportunities for libraries to help perform their cultural heritage preservation function in various and interesting ways. Multiple Indonesian libraries rely on social media technology to preserve and raise awareness of their ancient manuscript collections. Some of those interesting strategies are uploading posts related to the libraries’ ancient manuscript collections; posting “snapshots” of sections of ancient manuscripts; documenting ancient manuscript conservation practices; documenting the involvement of communities in preserving ancient manuscripts; announcing upcoming events and activities related to ancient manuscript studies; and posting interesting news, information and updates about ancient manuscript collections.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the existing literature and empirical studies by providing insights into the adoption of social media technology to help preservation and raise awareness of ancient manuscripts in the digital environment. This paper can help those libraries wanting to use their social media accounts to increase and develop their preservation efforts, especially when it comes to ancient manuscript collections.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how social media can be an effective tool for academic libraries to support their communities in the digital environment and relay information about their cultural functions.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper involves a literature review to discuss the implementation of academic libraries’ cultural functions through social media account. This paper also observes some academic libraries’ accounts that use social media to carry out their cultural functions.
Findings
Social media provides opportunities for academic libraries in performing and developing their cultural functions. Academic libraries already use social media to deliver and communicate their cultural functions. However, some challenges might arise and necessitate a review of the library’s resources and the skills of library professionals.
Originality/value
This paper fills the lack of empirical studies analyzing the implementation of academic libraries’ cultural functions through social media accounts and contributes to the literature about the cultural functions of libraries in the digital environment. This paper can help those academic libraries wanting to leverage, bring innovation and increase their cultural functions in the digital environment through their social media accounts.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to highlight the involvement and empowerment of women in cultural heritage preservation, in particular their use of digital technology applications and online platforms.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper reviews the relevant literature and discusses specific examples of women using digital technology and cyberspaces for cultural heritage preservation.
Findings
Cyberspaces and digital technology present opportunities for women to be actively involved and empowered in cultural heritage preservation. Examples of this involvement are digitization activities and projects, using digital spaces to discuss issues related to cultural heritage preservation, and transmitting information related to cultural heritage preservation via online platforms and channels. But digital skills and competency training are needed to strengthen and support women’s active involvement in the cyberspace arena, and governments and other stakeholders such as academic or public libraries could collaborate to implement this training.
Originality/value
Although there are several studies that discuss women’s roles in cultural heritage preservation, the literature review revealed that few studies focus on the empowerment and participation of women in the use of digital technology and cyberspace in preserving cultural heritage. By discussing specific examples, this paper adds to the literature and supports the active involvement of women in participating in cultural heritage preservation, especially in the context of digital technology applications and cyberspaces. Leveraging digital technologies to help preserve intangible cultural heritage that has been passed down from generation to generation at the family level is also recommended.

This study aims to identify current practices of environmentally friendly sustainable preventive conservation in Asian libraries.
Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify current practices of environmentally friendly sustainable preventive conservation in Asian libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses a predominantly quantitative survey for data collection with a combination of open and closed questions. From 237 survey links sent, 22 responses were received from libraries in 16 Asian countries.
Findings
This study uncovers current practices in four areas of environmentally sustainable preventive conservation in Asia: collection preservation, environmental monitoring and management, integrated pest management, and collections care and handling. Challenges to implementing sustainable preventive conservation were also revealed.
Research limitations/implications
The response rate was relatively low, and responses were not received from all countries in Asia. As such, while the study provides a starting point for further research, it cannot be assumed that the findings are representative of Asian libraries in general. In addition, some aspects of preventive conservation (for example, disaster preparedness, exhibition) and library preservation management were excluded from the study, and research on these topics, together with environmental and economic factors, is encouraged, along with qualitative research methods.
Practical implications
This study highlights the environmentally friendly sustainable initiatives that libraries employ in their preservation programmes and increases awareness of challenges to implementing those initiatives.
Originality/value
To date there has been little research on environmentally sustainable preventive conservation practices within Asia's libraries. This study therefore makes a valuable contribution to understanding current practices of preventive conservation in Asia.

Abstract
Purpose
Rare book collections are special, not only in terms of their physical appearance but also because of their historical significance and the information they contain. The purpose of this study is twofold: to identify the physical condition of rare book collections and to determine the main causes of damage to rare books collection that belongs to a museum library in Indonesia.
Design/methodology/approach
This research involved conducting a survey of the physical condition of the collection of rare books owned by a museum library in Indonesia. Supporting data was also obtained through interviews with one of the staff who served as the museum collection conservator. This study used random sampling to take samples from the collection, which consisted of 950 rare books, with total sample of 91.
Findings
The results obtained state that the condition of the existing rare book collection is classified as severely damaged. One of the causes of damage that can be addressed immediately is the cleaning regime: the collection and library space should be cleaned thoroughly and regularly so that dust and dirt in and around the rare book collection can be reduced.
Research limitations/implications
This research was limited to physical identification, which can be done easily because it does not require various kinds of laboratory tests. It was a case study examining a single collection in a single museum library. The pool of books from which the samples were taken was therefore relatively homogenous. Therefore, it is hoped that further research can identify other factors and types of damage in more detail so that all damage to rare book collections can be identified and mitigated.
Originality/value
Research discussing the condition of rare book collections, especially for special libraries in museums in Indonesia, is still very limited. Detailed surveys of the physical condition of collections, especially rare book collections in museums, have rarely been discussed by previous research. The work will contribute to assessing the physical condition of rare book collections.
