Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present weighted Euclidean distance for measuring whether the fitting of projective transformation matrix is more reliable in feature-based image stitching.

Design/methodology/approach

The hybrid model of weighted Euclidean distance criterion and intelligent chaotic genetic algorithm (CGA) is established to achieve a more accurate matrix in image stitching. Feature-based image stitching is used in this paper for it can handle non-affine situations. Scale invariant feature transform is applied to extract the key points, and the false points are excluded using random sampling consistency (RANSAC) algorithm.

Findings

This work improved GA by combination with chaos's ergodicity, so that it can be applied to search a better solution on the basis of the matrix solved by Levenberg-Marquardt. The addition of an external loop in RANSAC can help obtain more accurate matrix with large probability. Series of experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Practical implications

The modified feature-based method proposed in this paper can be easily applied to practice and can obtain a better image stitching performance with a good robustness.

Originality/value

A hybrid model of weighted Euclidean distance criterion and CGA is proposed for optimization of projective transformation matrix in image stitching. The authors introduce chaos theory into GA to modify its search strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of corporate governance on the capital market participants’ abilities to forecast future performance, as measured by the properties of analysts’ earnings forecasts in Asian stock markets.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper hypothesizes that higher corporate governance is associated with lower forecast errors, lower forecast dispersion and lower forecast revision volatility.

Findings

These predictions are supported with a sample of companies across eleven Asian economies over 2004-2012. The results of this paper suggest that corporate governance plays a significant role in the predictability of firm’s future performance and, therefore, improves the financial environment in Asian stock markets. Furthermore, the impact of corporate governance on analysts’ forecast properties is more pronounced in countries with strong investor protection.

Research/limitations/implications

The authors acknowledge the following limitations of this paper. First, the results of this paper may be subject to omitted-variable bias and endogeneity issue. The authors have used control variables in the regressions to reduce the omitted variable bias. The authors have run lead-lag regressions to address causality issue. Second, CLSA corporate governance scores are collected for largest companies in each jurisdiction. Therefore, the sample is biased towards the largest companies in those jurisdictions and may not be representative of the average firm in the Asia.

Originality/value

The results of this paper speak to the benefit of having strong corporate governance in terms of reducing the information asymmetry between investors and corporate management.

Abstract

Purpose

The anti-friction and anti-wear properties of WS2@GO composites on paraffin liquid were investigated with a four-ball tribometer.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of graphene oxide (GO) nano hybrid composites decorated with tungsten disulfide (WS2) were prepared in-suit by hydrothermal strategy.

Findings

The results showed that compared to the virgin oil, friction coefficient and diameter of wear scare of lubricant oil containing W/G = 1:1 hybrid composite was reduced by 42.7% and 31.6%, respectively. At the microscopic, the excellent lubrication performance resulted from the tribo-chemical reaction on the sliding interface, which promotes the formation of tribo-film with a thickness of 8 nm. The carbonization compound, WO3 and Fe2O3 in the tribo-film results from the tribo-chemical reactions at the sliding interface, which can improve the stability and strength of tribo-film. Thereby the metal surface was further protected from friction and wear.

Originality/value

A series of WS2@GO composites were prepared in-suit by a hydrothermal strategy, and the tribo-film was analyzed by the transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the influence mechanism of brazing and aging on the strengthening and corrosion behavior of novel multilayer sheets (AA4045/AA7072/AA3003M/AA4045).

Design/methodology/approach

Polarization curve tests, immersion experiments and transmission electron microscopy analysis were used to study the corrosion behavior and tensile properties of the sheets before and after brazing and aging.

Findings

The strength of the sheet is weakened after brazing due to brittle eutectic phases, and recovered after aging due to enhanced precipitation strengthening in the AA7072 interlayer. The core of nonbrazed sheets cannot be protected due to the significant galvanic coupling effect between the intermetallic particles and the substrate. Brazing and aging treatments promote the redissolved of second phased and limit corrosion along the eutectic region in the clad, allowing the core to be protected.

Originality/value

AA7xxx alloy was added to conventional brazed sheets to form a novel Al alloy composite sheet with AA4xxx/AA7xxx/AA3xxx structure. The strengthening and corrosion mechanism of the sheet was proposed. The added interlayer can sacrificially protect the core from corrosion and improves strength after aging treatment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the impact of ownership structure on firm financial performance, for 146 manufacturing firms listed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) for the period 2003–2012.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical background of the present study is based on the agency theory. Ownership structure is measured by institutional shareholdings, insider shareholdings, foreign shareholders and government shareholdings, while return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), market-to-book ratio (MBR) and Tobin's Q (TQ) are used as proxies of corporate financial performance. The dynamic panel generalized method of moments (GMM) method is employed to cater for the issue of endogeneity.

Findings

We find that institutional ownership exerts a significant positive impact on ROE and MBR, which suggests that institutional investors play a significant role in improving the financial performance of the sample Pakistani. Furthermore, the results reveal a significant positive relationship of insider ownership with ROA, ROE, MBR and TQ, which is consistent with the prediction of agency theory that concentration of insider ownership aligns the interest of shareholders with those of the managers and hence improves performance. A significant positive association of government shareholdings with ROA and ROE was also found. Therefore, policymakers may encourage government ownership in firms, which can help to improve corporate financial performance.

Originality/value

The present study contributes to the existing literature on ownership structure and corporate financial performance in an emerging market like Pakistan. It is worth mentioning that the institutional setup and corporate governance structure in Pakistan is yet at an evolving stage. Findings of this study may provide useful insights to corporate managers and investors about the relationship between ownership structure and financial performance of firms from the manufacturing sector in Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

Taking into account the factors of torque saturation and angular velocity limitation during the actual attitude maneuver of the satellite, as well as the difficulty of parameter selection in the design of attitude control algorithm, the purpose of this paper is to propose a satellite magnetic/momentum wheel attitude control technology based on pigeon-inspired optimization (PIO) cascade-saturation control law optimization.

Design/methodology/approach

The optimal parameters are calculated through the PIO algorithm and then the parameters are used in the cascade-saturation control law to control the actuator findings-mathematical simulation results show that the cascade-saturation control law optimization algorithm based on PIO can shorten the adjustment time and reduce the steady-state error.

Findings

Compared with traditional attitude maneuver control with given parameters, the PIO algorithm can accurately calculate the optimal parameters needed to achieve the control objective and this method has better stability and higher accuracy.

Originality/value

The innovative PIO algorithm is used to calculate the optimal parameters, and the cascade saturation control law is used to control the actuator. Compared with the traditional algorithm, the regulation time is shortened and the steady-state error is reduced.
