Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the compressive behavior of hollow triply periodic minimal surface (HTPMS) cellular structures by selective laser melting (SLM).
Design/methodology/approach
This study presents a design method for gyroid hollow triply periodic minimal surfaces (G-HTPMS) and primitive hollow triply periodic minimal surfaces (P-HTPMS) cellular structures, and SLM technology was applied to manufacture these cellular structures. Compressive behaviors and energy absorption behaviors of hollow cellular structures were researched in this study.
Findings
Compared with normal gyroid triply periodic minimal surfaces (G-TPMS) and normal primitive triply periodic minimal surfaces (P-TPMS), the G-HTPMS and P-HTPMS have higher elastic modulus, plateau stress and effective energy absorption under uniaxial compression. The hollow design in HTPMS can enhance the mechanical properties and energy absorption of the cellular structure. Finite element analysis also demonstrates that the hollow design can reduce stress concentration, which improved the compressive curves from a severely fluctuating state to a relatively flat state and reduces fracture. According to compressive behaviors, G-TPMS and G-HTPMS are the bending-dominated cellular structures with strain hardening characteristics, and P-TPMS and P-HTPMS are the stretching-dominated cellular structures with strain softening characteristics.
Originality/value
This research provided a design method for HTPMS, and it was proved that the mechanical properties increased by hollow design inspired by bamboo.

Purpose
Selective laser melting (SLM) is an important advanced additive manufacturing technology. The existing SLM printing technology cannot manufacture the mechanical parts that fully meet the requirements of high precision and strength. This paper aims to explore a new post-processing method for SLM 316L specimen, namely, using of the TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating fabricated by multi-arc ion plating on the surface of SLM specimens, for improving the performance of SLM specimens. The other purpose of this paper is compared the performances of the TiAlN/TiN multilayer coating machined specimen and the TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating SLM specimen.
Design/methodology/approach
The TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating is fabricated by multi-arc ion plating on the surface of 316L specimens. The surface morphology and selected mechanical properties of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating plating on the SLM substrate specimen and the machined substrate specimen were studied in this paper. The analyzed properties included surface topography, micro hardness, the adhesion, the thickness and the wear resistance of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating plating on the SLM substrate specimen and the machined substrate specimen.
Findings
The electron microscope images reveal that surface morphology of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating plating on the SLM specimens is relatively flat, and there are some micro-particles in different sizes and pin holes dispersed on them. After TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating, the performances of SLM samples, such as micro hardness, the thickness and the wear resistance, were significantly improved. The micro hardness of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating machined specimen is higher than that of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating SLM specimen. However, the adhesion of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating machined specimen is less than that of TiN/TiAlN multilayer coating SLM specimen.
Originality/value
The study provides a new post-processing method for SLM 316L specimen to improve the performance of SLM specimens and to enable SLM specimens to be applied in the field of precision mechanical transmission.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine what individual motives (e.g., self-expression or rewards) and brand communication aspects (such as content) influence consumers' brand engagement behaviors, and how these behaviors are linked to their intentions in favor of a brand.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conducted an online survey with a quota sample of 629 adults in the United States. Participants were recruited through a Qualtrics online panel.
Findings
Data indicate that the motivations of entertainment and remuneration are positively associated with consuming and contributing to brand content on social media. In addition, the motive of obtaining information prompts people to consume brand content (e.g., reading a brand's posts or watching videos), while the motivation for self-expression leads to contributing activities (e.g., conversing on a brand's account and uploading videos). After controlling for these motivations, brand communication strategy (such as content and tone) appears to influence consumers' brand-related activities on social media, which subsequently results in consumer intentions in favor of the brand.
Originality/value
Consumer engagement in social media has become the primary focus of corporate communication. This work is one of few studies that have explored how consumer motivation and brand communication come together to generate consumer engagement on social media. The overall findings shed light on how corporate communications can generate consumer engagement on social media and how companies reap benefits from it.

Abstract
Purpose
Projecting the population distribution in geographical regions is important for many applications such as launching marketing campaigns or enhancing the public safety in certain densely populated areas. Conventional studies require the collection of people’s trajectory data through offline means, which is limited in terms of cost and data availability. The wide use of online social network (OSN) apps over smartphones has provided the opportunities of devising a lightweight approach of conducting the study using the online data of smartphone apps. This paper aims to reveal the relationship between the online social networks and the offline communities, as well as to project the population distribution by modeling geo-homophily in the online social networks.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, the authors propose the concept of geo-homophily in OSNs to determine how much the data of an OSN can help project the population distribution in a given division of geographical regions. Specifically, the authors establish a three-layered theoretic framework that first maps the online message diffusion among friends in the OSN to the offline population distribution over a given division of regions via a Dirichlet process and then projects the floating population across the regions.
Findings
By experiments over large-scale OSN data sets, the authors show that the proposed prediction models have a high prediction accuracy in characterizing the process of how the population distribution forms and how the floating population changes over time.
Originality/value
This paper tries to project population distribution by modeling geo-homophily in OSNs.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the origin of the development of insolvency laws in China and Russia and explores the evolving role of the states in the legislative process.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is conducted based on the analysis of historical materials and the relevant secondary sources written in Chinese and Russian.
Findings
The paper argues that the development of the insolvency laws in China and Russia underlines the diverging perceptions by the states about the ways to improve economic performance through reforming their respective state enterprise system. On the other hand, the unsatisfactory utilisation of the laws in the these countries revealed the incompleteness of the wider institutional reform that opened up possibilities for predatory exploitations and corruptive practices which in turn upset the market-building in these developing economies.
Originality value
This study highlights that by bring back the state into the analysis, the competing ideas, interests and institutions in the development of insolvency laws can be identified.
