Abstract

Purpose

Independent directors are important corporate decision participants and makers. Based on the Chinese cultural background, this paper interprets the listing order of independent directors as independent directors’ status, exploring their influence on the corporate research and development (R&D) behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper studies A-share listed firms in China from 2008 to 2018 as the sample. The main method is ordinary least square (OLS) regression. We also use other methods to deal with endogenous problems, such as the firm fixed effect method, change model method, two-stage instrumental variable method, and Heckman two-stage method.

Findings

(1) Higher independent directors’ status attribute to more effective exertion of supervision and consultation function, and positively enhance the corporate R&D investment. The increase of the independent director’ status by one standard deviation will increase the R&D investment by 4.6%. (2) The above effect is more influential in firms with stronger traditional culture atmosphere, higher information opacity and higher performance volatility. (3) High-status independent directors promote R&D investment by improving the scientificity of R&D evaluation and reducing information asymmetry. (4) The enhancing effect of independent director’ status on R&D investment is positively associated with the firm’s patent output and market value.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to understanding the relationship between the independent directors’ status and their duty execution from an embedded cultural background perspective. The findings of the study enlighten the improvement of corporate governance efficiency and the healthy development of the capital market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a simplified method to analyze the transient characteristics of a fractional-order very high frequency (VHF) resonant boost converter. The transient analytical solutions of state variables obtained by this method could be used as a guide for parameter design and circuit optimization.

Design/methodology/approach

The VHF converter is decoupled into a simplified equivalent circuit model and described by the differential equation. The solution of the simplified equivalent circuit model is taken as the main oscillation component of the transient state variable. And the equivalent small parameter method (ESPM) and Kalman filter technology are used to solve the differential equation of the converter to obtain the steady-state ripple component. Then, by superimposing the abovementioned two parts, the approximate transient analytical solution can be acquired. Finally, the influence of the fractional order of the energy storage elements on the transient process of the converter is discussed.

Findings

The results from the proposed method agree well with those from simulations, which indicates that the proposed method can effectively analyze the transient characteristic of the fractional-order VHF converter, and the analytical solution derived from the proposed mathematical model shows sufficient accuracy.

Originality/value

This paper proposes for the first time a method to analyze the transient characteristics of a fractional-order VHF resonant boost converter. By combining the main oscillated solution derived from the simplified equivalent circuit model with the steady-state solution based on ESPM, this method can greatly reduce the computation amount to estimate the transient solution. In addition, the discussion on the order of fractional calculus of energy storage components can provide an auxiliary guidance for the selection of circuit parameters and the study of stability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find a simpler model for the reactance components in the high-frequency range on the premise of ensuring the accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, based on the fractional calculus theory and the traditional integer-order model, a reactance model suitable for high frequency is constructed, and the mutation cross differential evolution algorithm is used to identify the parameters in the model.

Findings

By comparing the integer-order model, high-frequency fractional-order model and the actual impedance characteristic curve of inductance and capacitance, it is verified that the proposed model can more accurately reflect the high-frequency characteristics of inductance and capacitance. The simulation and experimental results show that the oscillator constructed based on the proposed model can analyze the frequency and output waveform of the oscillator more accurately.

Originality/value

The model proposed in this paper has a simple structure and contains only two parameters to be identified. At the same time, the model has high precision. The fitting errors of impedance curve and phase-frequency characteristic curve are less than 5%. Therefore, the proposed model is helpful to improve the simplicity and accuracy of circuit system analysis and design.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the role of the wall slip on the dynamic characteristics of the multi-groove water-lubricated bearing considering rough contact, including stiffness and damping coefficients of the water film and contact stiffness coefficient of the asperity contact.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified perturbed average Reynolds equations with the wall slip are derived, and the calculated perturbed hydrodynamic pressures are integrated to obtain the stiffness and damping coefficients of the water film. The elastic-plastic contact model of Kogut and Etsion is used to determine the contact stiffness coefficient.

Findings

Numerical results reveal that the wall slip has the more significant impact on the water film stiffness coefficients compared with the damping and contact stiffness coefficients. When the slip angle lies in a reasonable range, the lubrication performance can be effectively improved, especially in the mixed lubrication condition. In addition, it is worth emphasizing that the abrupt change of the water film stiffness coefficients occurs at the region II (pressure zone) in this study.

Originality/value

The influence mechanism of the wall slip on the dynamic characteristics of the water-lubricated bearing considering rough contact is first revealed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel assembly spring-back model which takes surface contact conditions between sheet metal parts into consideration so that the assembly dimensions and variations can be more precisely predicted than existing assembly simulation models.

Design/methodology/approach

Because an assembly process is composed of four essential steps, i.e. locating, clamping, joining and tool releasing, the mechanistic models associated with these steps are developed in the paper. In particular, the surface contact between the weld flanges (in folding joint configuration) and the overlapping surfaces (in lap joint configurations) is included in the models. Sensitivity models are developed.

Findings

Two cases studies are presented, i.e. the cantilever beams assembly and the Z-plates assembly. More precise prediction results are shown.

Research limitations/implications

The model developed in this paper is based upon analytical elastic beam theories. Therefore, the results and case studies are limited only to workpieces that can be approximately represented by beam geometries. However, the methods can be broadened to generic workpiece geometries by using finite element methods; thus, the developed method is highly valuable to a broad range of applications such as automotive body assembly and aerospace industries.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research lies in its inclusion of surface contact conditions in an assembly simulation model by using analytical beam mechanistic models to achieve more accurate assembly variation predictions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to verify the effectiveness of the proposed transient mixed lubrication and wear coupling model [mixed lubrication and wear (MLW) coupling model] under water lubricated conditions by comparing with the experimental results.

Design/methodology/approach

Water lubricated bearings are the key parts of the transmission system of an underwater vehicle and some surface ships. In this study, the friction and wear behaviors of rubber, nylon and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) samples with stainless steel underwater lubrication were compared by using ring-block contact structure on multifunctional friction and wear test bench-5000 friction and wear tester.

Findings

The results show that the transient wear depth and wear amount of PEEK, nylon and rubber samples under water lubrication are in good agreement with the calculated results of the theoretical model, which verifies the rationality and scientific nature of the MLW coupling model. Thus, the numerical model is applicable for the wear prediction of the journal bearing under water-lubricated conditions. Furthermore, numerical and experimental results reveal that the anti-wear performance among three water-lubricated materials can be ranked by: PEEK > nylon > rubber.

Originality/value

It is expected that this study can provide more information for experimental and numerical research of water-lubricated bearings under water-lubricated conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products was investigated through demand forecasting; targeted suggestions and countermeasures are provided. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned statement.

Design/methodology/approach

A Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model is proposed to forecast the demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products. The mean GM (1, 1) model was used to forecast the demand trend, and the Markov chain model was used for optimisation. Considering Guangxi province as an example, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method were verified, and relevant suggestions are made.

Findings

Compared with other models, the Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model can more effectively forecast the demand for the cold chain logistics of agricultural products, is closer to the actual value and has better accuracy and minor error. It shows that the demand forecast can provide specific suggestions and theoretical support for the development of cold chain logistics.

Originality/value

This study evaluated the development trend of the cold chain logistics of agricultural products based on the research horizon of demand forecasting for cold chain logistics. A Markov-optimised mean GM (1, 1) model is proposed to overcome the problem of poor prediction for series with considerable fluctuation in the modelling process, and improve the prediction accuracy. It finds a breakthrough to promote the development of cold chain logistics through empirical analysis, and give relevant suggestions based on the obtained results.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to improve the automatic leveling performance of tractor body in hilly and mountainous areas by designing a kind of controllable and adaptive leveling mechanism of tractor body.

Design/methodology/approach

The mechanism is mainly composed of longitudinal slope leveling mechanism, transverse slope leveling mechanism and control components. According to the tractor body attitude in operation, the longitudinal slope leveling and lateral slope leveling can coordinate to realize the adaptive adjustment of tractor body. For this mechanism, the support mode of the linear three-point support and plane positioning combining is designed, and the leveling method of electromechanical combination is designed. The servo motor controls the longitudinal slope leveling mechanism through the reducer with self-locking function to realize the longitudinal leveling, and the servo driver controls the expansion and contraction of electric cylinder to realize lateral leveling. The designed mode can realize the relative independence and coordination of leveling in different directions.

Findings

The performance test results of the leveling mechanism are shown: the mechanism can work normally; the leveling accuracy can reach within 1°; and the leveling accuracy and stability can meet the design requirements. The leveling accuracy and stability of longitudinal slope are higher than that of lateral slope, and the coordination leveling effect of longitudinal slope and lateral slope is better than that of the independent leveling.

Originality/value

This study provides a technical reference for the design of leveling device of agricultural machines and tools in hilly and mountainous areas.
