Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to find the exact solutions of a (3 + 1)-dimensional non-integrable Korteweg-de Vries type (KdV-type) equation, which can be used to describe the stability of soliton in a nonlinear media with weak dispersion.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors apply the extended Bell polynomial approach, Hirota’s bilinear method and the homoclinic test technique to find the rogue waves, homoclinic breather waves and soliton waves of the (3 + 1)-dimensional non-integrable KdV-type equation. The used approach formally derives the essential conditions for these solutions to exist.
Findings
The results show that the equation exists rogue waves, homoclinic breather waves and soliton waves. To better understand the dynamic behavior of these solutions, the authors analyze the propagation and interaction properties of the these solutions.
Originality/value
These results may help to investigate the local structure and the interaction of waves in KdV-type equations. It is hoped that the results can help enrich the dynamic behavior of such equations.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to find homoclinic breather waves, rogue waves and soliton waves for a (3 + 1)-dimensional generalized Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (gKP) equation, which can be used to describe the propagation of weakly nonlinear dispersive long waves on the surface of a fluid.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors apply the extended Bell polynomial approach, Hirota’s bilinear method and the homoclinic test technique to find the rogue waves, homoclinic breather waves and soliton waves of the (3 + 1)-dimensional gKP equation.
Findings
The results imply that the gKP equation admits rogue waves, homoclinic breather waves and soliton waves. Moreover, the authors also find that rogue waves can come from the extreme behavior of the breather solitary wave. The authors analyze the propagation and interaction properties of these solutions to better understand the dynamic behavior of these solutions.
Originality/value
These results may help us to further study the local structure and the interaction of waves in KP-type equations. It is hoped that the results can help enrich the dynamic behavior of such equations.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the changes in living standard among families with different socio-economic status in China with the use of Engel's Coefficient. The authors develop a decomposition methodology to figure out the driving forces behind changes in Engel's Coefficient, and investigate how dramatic economic growth, volatile food price and rapid nutrition transition affect living standard among different families.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors propose a statistical method to decompose the changes in living standard measured by Engel's Coefficient into structure effect, price effect, quantity effect and income effect. Using the China Health and Nutrition Survey data between 2000 and 2011, the authors estimate these four effects by employing a decomposition method.
Findings
Results show that Engel's Coefficient in China decreased by 8.7 percentage points (hereafter “pp”) during 2000–2011, where structure effect leads to 0.2 pp increase, price effect results in 17.7 pp increase, quantity effect brings about 12.4 pp decline and income effect contributes to 14.2 pp decline. Results indicate that rising food prices are the main obstacle to improve households' living standard. Typically, poor and rural families' living standard is more vulnerable to the rise in food prices, and they benefit less from income growth.
Originality/value
This study proposes a decomposition method to investigate the determinants of change in Engel's Coefficient, which provides a deeper understanding of how economic growth, food price change and nutrition transition affect people's living standard in different socio-economic groups in developing countries. This study also provides valuable insights on how to achieve common prosperity from the perspective of consumption upgrading.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate Chinese farmers’ adaptation behavior in the context of the rising cost of labor in agriculture. As the cost of labor increases, farmers will either reallocate their budget to different inputs or change the structure of agricultural production to maximize profit.
Design/methodology/approach
The Rural Fixed Point Observation data set between 2004 and 2010 is employed in the empirical analysis of this study. Both the compensated and uncompensated demand elasticities with respect to wages are estimated by adopting the translog cost function and the profit function.
Findings
The results show that labor input will drop down significantly as a response to rising wages. Land, fertilizer and intermediate inputs are net complements of labor, whereas machinery appears to be net substitute for labor. In addition, the authors also separate the expansion effect from the substitution effect and find that farmers will shift to grain production with intensive use of fertilizer and from wheat and corn to rice as a response to the rising cost of labor.
Originality/value
This study adopts the classical household model to incorporate various adaptation behaviors of farmers into one framework and decomposes the total effect of the rising cost of labor on input demand into an expansion effect and a substitution effect, which provides a better understanding of farmers’ adaptation behavior.

Purpose
Career plateau and employee silence are negative employee management phenomena that should be overcome but are challenging. However, relatively speaking, when employees reach a particular career stage, it is inevitable that the hierarchical plateau in the career plateau will occur, while the phenomena of employee silence have the chance to improve. This paper aims to study the influence mechanism of the career plateau on employee silence in an uncertain environment and then provides theoretical support for enhancing the organizational phenomenon of employee silence.
Design/methodology/approach
After considering the effects of career plateau and social desirability of employee silence, this paper obtained 313 samples based on the pilot survey, which were collected anonymously online and offline. Based on passing the data quality test, this experiment uses hierarchical regression, Bootstrap method, interaction graph and slope test to test the mediating variable
Findings
The results show a significant positive correlation between career plateau and employees' silent behavior. Affective commitment plays a partial mediating role between career plateau and employees' silent behavior. Organizational justice not only negatively moderated the relationship between career plateau and affective commitment but also negatively moderated the indirect effect of career plateau on silent behavior through affective commitment.
Originality/value
First, based on the theory of uncertainty management and social exchange theory, this paper develops a behavioral response to the organizational environment based on the principle of fair exchange when employees perceive an uncertain environment. This study innovatively applied the two theories together in one study, establishing a link between the two theories. Second, this study explores the influence of career plateau on employee silence and empirically tests the silent behavior based on the previous division of three dimensions of career plateau. The third study explores affective commitment, the black box of the relationship between career plateau and employee silence. This research also enriches the related research on affective commitment.

The purpose of this paper is to study the breather waves, rogue waves and solitary waves of an extended (3 + 1)-dimensional Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) equation, which can be used to depict many nonlinear phenomena in fluid dynamics and plasma physics.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors apply the Bell’s polynomial approach, the homoclinic test technique and Hirota’s bilinear method to find the breather waves, rogue waves and solitary waves of the extended (3 + 1)-dimensional KP equation.
Findings
The results imply that the extended (3 + 1)-dimensional KP equation has breather wave, rogue wave and solitary wave solutions. Meanwhile, the authors provide the graphical analysis of such solutions to better understand their dynamical behavior.
Originality/value

The purpose of this paper is to study stability analysis, solition solutions and Gaussian solitons of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher order terms, which can be used to describe the propagation properties of optical soliton solutions.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors apply the ansatz method and the Hamiltonian system technique to find its bright, dark and Gaussian wave solitons and analyze its modulation instability analysis and stability analysis solution.
Findings
The results imply that the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation has bright, dark and Gaussian wave solitons. Meanwhile, the authors provide the graphical analysis of such solutions to better understand their dynamical behavior. Some constraint conditions are provided which can guarantee the existence of solitons. The authors analyze its modulation instability analysis and stability analysis solution.
Originality/value
These results may help us to further study the local structure and the interaction of solutions in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger -type equations. Abstract
Purpose
This paper takes the Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect as a quasi-natural experiment and investigates the impact of capital market liberalization on the corporate debt maturity structure. It also aims to provide some policy implications for corporate debt financing and further liberalization of the capital market in China.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing the exogenous event of Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect and using the data of Chinese A-share firms from 2010 to 2020, this study constructs a difference-in-differences model to examine the relationship between capital market liberalization and corporate debt maturity structure. To validate the results, this study performed several robustness tests, including the parallel test, the placebo test, the Heckman two-stage regression and the propensity score matching.
Findings
This paper finds that capital market liberalization has significantly increased the proportion of long-term debt of target firms. Further analyses suggest that the impact of capital market liberalization on the debt maturity structure is more pronounced for firms with lower management ownership and non-Big 4 audit. Channel tests show that capital market liberalization improves firms’ information environment and curbs self-interested management behavior.
Originality/value
This research provides empirical evidence for the consequences of capital market liberalization and enriches the literature on the determinants of corporate debt maturity structure. Further this study makes a reference for regulators and financial institutions to improve corporate financing through the governance role of capital market liberalization.

Abstract
Purpose
Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process suitable for fabricating metal porous scaffolds. The unit cell topology is a significant factor that determines the mechanical property of porous scaffolds. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of unit cell topology on the compression properties of porous Cobalt–chromium (Co-Cr) scaffolds fabricated by SLM using finite element (FE) and experimental measurement methods.
Design/methodology/approach
The Co-Cr alloy porous scaffolds constructed in four different topologies, i.e. cubic close packed (CCP), face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC) and spherical hollow cubic (SHC), were designed and fabricated via SLM process. FE simulations and compression tests were performed to evaluate the effects of unit cell topology on the compression properties of SLM-processed porous scaffolds.
Findings
The Mises stress predicted by FE simulations showed that different unit cell topologies resulted in distinct stress distributions on the bearing struts of scaffolds, whereas the unit cell size directly determined the stress value. Comparisons on the stress results for four topologies showed that the FCC unit cell has the minimum stress concentration due to its inclined bearing struts and horizontal arms. Simulations and experiments both indicated that the compression modulus and strengths of FCC, BCC, SHC, CCP scaffolds with the same cell size presented in a descending order. These distinct compression behaviors were correlated with the corresponding mechanics response on bearing struts. Two failure mechanisms, cracking and collapse, were found through the results of compression tests, and the influence of topological designs on the failure was analyzed and discussed. Finally, the cell initial response of the SLM-processed Co-Cr scaffold was tested through the in vitro cell culture experiment.
Originality/value
A focus and concern on the compression properties of SLM-processed porous scaffolds was presented from a new perspective of unit cell topology. It provides some new knowledge to the structure optimization of porous scaffolds for load-bearing bone implants.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the effects of different ultrasonic-assisted loading degrees on the microstructure, mechanical properties and the fracture morphology of Cu/Zn+15%SAC0307+15%Cu/Al solder joints.
Design/methodology/approach
A new method in which 45 μm Zn particles were mixed with 15% 500 nm Cu particles and 15% 500 nm SAC0307 particles as solders (SACZ) and five different ultrasonic loading degrees were applied for realizing the soldering between Cu and Al at 240 °C and 8 MPa. Then, SEM was used to observe and analyze the soldering seam, interface microstructure and fracture morphology; the structural composition was determined by EDS; the phase of the soldering seam was characterized by XRD; and a PTR-1102 bonding tester was adopted to test the average shear strength.
Findings
The results manifest that Al–Zn solid solution is formed on the Al side of the Cu/SACZ/Al joints, while the interface IMC (Cu5Zn8) is formed on the Cu side of the Cu/SACZ/Al joints. When single ultrasonic was used in soldering, the interface IMC (Cu5Zn8) gradually thickens with the increase of ultrasonic degree. It is observed that the proportion of Zn or ZnO areas in solders decreases, and the proportion of Cu–Zn compound areas increases with the variation of ultrasonic degree. The maximum shear strength of joint reaches 46.01 MPa when the dual ultrasonic degree is 60°. The fracture position of the joint gradually shifts from the Al side interface to the solders and then to the Cu side interface.
Originality/value
The mechanism of ultrasonic action on micro-nanoparticles is further studied. By using different ultrasonic loading degrees to realize Cu/Al soldering, it is believed that the understandings gained in this study may offer some new insights for the development of low-temperature soldering methodology for heterogeneous materials.
