Abstract

Purpose

To ensure the safety of aircraft fuel tanks, the FAA issued an airworthiness clause (25.981(b)) suggesting that the risk of combustion and explosion be reduced by installing a Flammability Reduction Means or an Ignition Mitigation Means. The airflow distribution method has a significant effect on the inerting performance. Therefore, this study aims to determine an optimum airflow distribution method of the inerting system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper establishes the calculation model of the oxygen concentration in the ullage of a multi-bay fuel tank, calculates the oxygen concentration in the ullage of an aircraft tank in single-flow and dual-flow modes under series and parallel ventilation methods and analyses the inerting performance of the tank under different airflow distribution methods.

Findings

The results show that: (1) the bleed flow rate required to achieve whole process inerting of multi-bay fuel tank in dual-flow mode is lower than that in single-flow mode; (2) under the parallel ventilation method, the decrease of oxygen concentration and the uniformity of each bay are better than that in the series ventilation method; (3) dual-flow mode staged ventilation method can be used to achieve the whole process inerting of the tanks under the minimum engine bleed consumption.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is to analyze and optimize the airflow distribution method of the inerting system under the whole flight envelope to minimize the engine bleed consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between inventory leanness and venture survival, and demonstrate the role of organizational environments in moderating this relationship from three dimensions: environmental complexity, dynamism and munificence.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a large panel data of more than 150,000 new Chinese small- and medium-sized enterprises between 2000 and 2007 in the manufacturing sector, the authors employ the method of survival analysis via an accelerated failure time model to explore the non-linear relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival. Moreover, the moderation model is applied to examine the moderating role of organizational environments.

Findings

At its core, this paper demonstrates the inverted U-shaped relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival. Furthermore, the authors find that environmental complexity and dynamism can negatively moderate this relationship, whereas environmental munificence acts the exact opposite.

Practical implications

Managers need to realize the trade-off between inventory leanness and venture survival. Collectively, more than 90 percent of new Chinese ventures have great potential to improve the likelihood of survival by implementing inventory leanness management. In addition, firms ought to be fully aware of the internal management and the external environments.

Originality/value

This is the first study to confirm the inverted U-shaped relationship between inventory leanness and the likelihood of survival, and empirically verify the moderating role of environmental complexity, dynamism and munificence on this relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

From the intra- and inter-regional dimensions, this paper investigates the linkage between industrial agglomeration and inventory performance, and further demonstrates the moderating role of firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain on this linkage.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a large panel dataset of Chinese manufacturers in the Yangtze River Delta for the period from 2008 to 2013, this study employs the method of spatial econometric analysis via a spatial Durbin model (SDM) to examine the effects of industrial agglomeration on inventory performance. Meanwhile, the moderation model is applied to examine the moderating role of two firm-level heterogeneity factors.

Findings

At its core, this research demonstrates that industrial agglomeration is associated with the positive change of inventory performance in the adjacent regions, whereas that in the host region as well as in general does not significantly increase. Additionally, both firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain can positively moderate these effects, except for the moderating role of firm size on the positive spillovers.

Practical implications

In view of firm heterogeneity, managers should take special care when matching their abilities of inventory management with the agglomeration effects. Firms with a high level of inventory management are suited to stay in an industrial cluster, while others would be better in the adjacent regions to enhance inventory performance.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to systematically analyze the effects of industrial agglomeration on inventory performance within and across clusters, and confirm that these effects are contingent upon firm size and enterprise status in the supply chain. It adds to the existing literature by highlighting the spatial spillovers from industrial clusters and enriching the antecedents of inventory leanness.

Abstract

Purpose

Using WeChat moments as an example, this article explores the impact of user role conflict on privacy concerns, social media fatigue and the three dimensions of discontinuous usage intention: control activities, short breaks and suspend usage intentions. Moreover, the moderating function of self-esteem in this process is examined.

Design/methodology/approach

The conceptual model includes role conflict, privacy concerns, social media fatigue, discontinuous usage intention and self-esteem. Three hundred and thirty-one questionnaires were collected using an online survey, and the data were analyzed with structural equation and hierarchical regression modeling.

Findings

The results show that (1) role conflict positively affects privacy concerns and social media fatigue; (2) privacy concerns also positively affect social media fatigue; (3) privacy concerns positively affect control activities intentions, although their impact on short breaks and suspend usage intentions is not significant, whereas social media fatigue significantly influences control activities, short breaks and suspend usage intentions; and (4) self-esteem negatively moderates the influence of role conflict on privacy concerns.

Research limitations/implications

A key limitation of this research is that it is designed for WeChat. Therefore, the question of whether other social media platforms face role conflict or discontinuous usage problems should be explored in the future.

Originality/value

The article is interesting in that it focuses on the discontinuous usage of social media and identifies factors that contribute to the discontinuous usage of social media. The findings make some theoretical contributions to, and have practical implications for, research into social media usage.

Abstract

Purpose

High-silicon chromium iron (HSCI) has been used in ground grids in southern China, while there was a lack of study on its corrosion behavior in this soil environment. The purpose of this paper is to discover the corrosion of HSCI in acidic and alkaline soil solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The original defects on the HSCI surface were observed using optical microscopy, and the corrosion behavior of the HSCI in the acidic and alkaline soil solutions were jointly detected using electrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer.

Findings

The results showed the corrosion rates of the HSCI in the acidic and alkaline soil solutions were limited, and the high contents of Cr and Si in matrix was responsible for its high corrosion resistance. The HSCI showed a similar corrosion tendency in the two solutions, while its corrosion rate in the acid soil solution was higher than that in the alkaline soil solution. The corrosion pits on the specimen surface were originated from the original defects in matrix, and the edges of the corrosion pits were more rounded than the original defects after 720 h immersion in the two solutions. The original defects in the HSCI matrix played a significant role in the corrosion process.

Originality/value

The paper discovered the corrosion evolution of HSCI in the acidic and alkaline soil solutions. What is more, the acceleration role of the original defects on the corrosion of the HSCI in the acidic and alkaline soil solutions was discovered in the paper. The results are beneficial for the material selection of ground grid equipment in engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on a mission approach, this study investigates the application of integrated reporting (IR). It also explores its role in shaping organisations' internal processes in Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN).

Design/methodology/approach

We employed a case study method and collected data by conducting semi-structured interviews with CGN managers and analysing their reports and appropriate documents.

Findings

Our findings reveal that the CGN is motivated by its mission and vision to adopt IR rather than by other common motivations, such as legitimacy, strategy and stakeholder pressure. IR practice contributes to implementing its mission and vision through direct and indirect methods, covering the changes in design archetypes and subsystems that meet the nature of reorientation changes that belong to first-order transition.

Research limitations/implications

This study extends empirical evidence of IR at the firm level in China and provides in-depth insights into how IR is implemented in Chinese SOEs. Our findings may be helpful for policymakers to review and develop policies. For instance, the government might consider integrating IR frameworks into current reporting and mandate listed companies to adopt IR. However, our data are from one company, the only Mainland Chinese Company recognised by the IIRC database.

Originality/value

This study provides an innovative approach to analysing IR and offers managers insight into how IR practice benefits the mission’s implications.

Abstract

Purpose

Interactivity is the key to developing digital branding. However, existing research on brand interactivity outcomes is inconsistent and fragmented, lacking a systematic empirical exploration of its effects on consumer responses in the digital context.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon the cognition-affection-conation (CAC) framework as our theoretical compass, a meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize and analyze empirical evidence from 144 samples involving 57,952 participants to assess how and when digital brand interactivity influences consumers’ multilevel responses.

Findings

Our narrative unfolds with digital brand interactivity as the catalyst, fostering positive consumer behaviors – brand loyalty and purchase intention – through a sequential dance of cognitive mindset shifts (brand experience, engagement and attitude) and affective resonance (trust and emotional attachment). A moderation analysis adds depth, revealing stronger effects in B2C settings for lesser-known brands with hedonic interaction content and among individuals with a collectivist orientation.

Practical implications

Our findings serve as a roadmap for targeted digital marketing strategies, guiding brands, consumers and contextual aspects to optimize the performance of digital branding by harnessing the full potential of digital interactivity.

Originality/value

This study introduces a framework combining CAC and brand-consumer psychology to understand how interactivity affects consumer responses in digital contexts. It delves into dynamic shifts moderated by brand characteristics, consumer traits and contextual factors, offering a holistic view of digital branding’s impact on interactive marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the temperature ratings of infant bedding.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical models were developed for predicting temperature ratings of infant bedding for all age groups based on the thermal balance equation. These models were validated by the published physiological data and the baby manikin tests. The air temperature was compared with the predicted temperature rating, and the skin temperature of infant or baby manikin was used to explain the validation results.

Findings

The models had higher prediction accuracy, especially for the infant bedding with uniformly distributed thermal insulation. The results showed that an increase of 1 clo in thermal insulation caused a decrease of 4.2–6.0 °C in temperature rating. The slope of the model reduced with the increasing month-age, indicating that an older infant had a lower temperature rating than a younger infant.

Practical implications

Suggestions were given for caregivers that younger infants ought to be covered with more bedding than adults; however, older infants were expected to require less bedding.

Originality/value

The outcomes provided scientific guidelines on the selection of bedding for infants at a particular room temperature to ensure the health and safety of infants.

Abstract

Purpose

The recent livestreaming commerce has magnified the role of influencer marketing, where the influencers are partnering with brands for product promotion. This study examines the impact of influencer attributes, interaction strategies and parasocial relationships on impulsive buying in livestreaming commerce.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey with 368 livestreaming commerce users was analyzed using the symmetric-thinking approach – partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and asymmetric thinking approach – fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA).

Findings

The results of PLS-SEM indicate that influencer trustworthiness, influencer interactivity and self-disclosure determine parasocial relationships, which in turn influence impulsive buying. The fsQCA finding returned three configurations with various combinations of the causal conditions (i.e. influencer attributes, interaction strategies, parasocial relationships, perceived fit uncertainty and perceived quality uncertainty) explaining the formation of impulsive buying.

Originality/value

These findings provide unique linear and nonlinear insights to explain the combinatory effects of influencer attributes, interaction strategies, parasocial relationships, perceived fit uncertainty and perceived quality uncertainty on impulsive buying in livestreaming commerce.
