Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use goal-setting theory to explain the transfer of knowledge and skills between master of business administration (MBA) and the workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were obtained by an online survey of MBA students enrolled in at four US graduate business schools. These were a public and private institution in the Northeast region, a private sectarian institution in the Midwest region and a private institution in the Pacific region. All students worked while attending the university. The sampling frame consisted of each school’s MBA enrollees. Questionnaires were distributed to a random cross-section of part-time students at each graduate school of business representative of returned by 144 students. The profiles of responders were consistent with parameters for the entire MBA student population.

Findings

The research shows that multiple goals of reciprocal knowledge and skills transfer may be in harmony and mutually reinforcing. In principle, each goal is more likely to be attained with greater economy of effort than might be surmised. Additionally, the same forces may act similarly to facilitate attainment of two well-integrated goals, in this case transfer between MBA studies and work, as well as between work and MBA studies.

Research limitations/implications

The present study involved participants from part-time public and private MBA granting institutions in the USA. The study tested and extended goal-setting theory and introduced the innovative concept of reciprocal transfer. Future studies should seek to generalize the findings to a broader population of part-time MBA students, especially from other nations. Despite its strengths, the findings of this study need to be interpreted in the perspective of some limitations. The current study did not measure transfer climates in either the organization or university settings. Transfer climates undoubtedly have an important bearing on transfer outcomes.

Practical implications

Review of the present study suggests that a positive MBA environment is needed to influence motivation to learn and perceptions of the MBA program’s utility, thereby promoting transfer of knowledge and skills to MBA studies from the workplace. A supportive work-to-MBA-studies transfer climate will lead to more active learning of course content that has greater relevance for achieving career goals. Potentially generalizable from the organizational transfer climate literature (Rouiller and Goldstein 1990; Rouiller and Goldstein 1993), positive transfer from work to MBA studies will occur when appropriate situational cues and consequences are present in the program.

Social implications

A constructive implication suggested by the findings of this study would be the intervention and transfer management by educators to structure and strengthen the university transfer climate of their part-time MBA programs. Traditionally, the concept of transfer climate has been primarily applied to employee workplace training activity and job performance. The university culture of the MBA student might emphasize and reward continuous learning from workplace experiences. Opportunities at the university should be provided for the exercise of newly acquired workplace skills that reinforce MBA learning experiences.

Originality/value

This is the first study that shows how learning goals and performance goals are integrated in the context of a new concept, i.e. reciprocal transfer of knowledge and skills between MBA and workplace settings. It also demonstrates, for the first time, the impact of learning and motivation for MBA studies and perceived utility of MBA program on the extent of transfer of learning and skills from the workplace to the university setting.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of supply chain governance (SCG) on supply chain resilience (SCR) in China, as well as the mediating role of supply chain finance (SCF) and the moderating role of digital technology adoption (DTA).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on resource orchestration theory (ROT), this paper constructs a theoretical model to examine the influence of SCG on SCR. Employing data collected from 312 Chinese firms, multiple regression is conducted to test the theoretical hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicate that both relational governance (RG) and contractual governance (CG) significantly enhance SCR and SCF. In addition, SCF plays a mediating role in the relationship between SCG and SCR. The study also finds that DTA has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between SCG and SCF.

Originality/value

First, based on ROT, this paper clarifies the nuanced driving effects of RG and CG on SCR. Second, SCF is introduced as an intermediary process between SCG and SCR, which reveals the inner mechanisms between SCG and SCR. Moreover, this study contributes to investigating the contingent role of DTA in the relationship between SCG and SCF.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the potential of trainable activation functions to enhance the performance of deep neural networks, specifically ResNet architectures, in the task of image classification. By introducing activation functions that adapt during training, the authors aim to determine whether such flexibility can lead to improved learning outcomes and generalization capabilities compared to static activation functions like ReLU. This research seeks to provide insights into how dynamic nonlinearities might influence deep learning models' efficiency and accuracy in handling complex image data sets.

Design/methodology/approach

This research integrates three novel trainable activation functions – CosLU, DELU and ReLUN – into various ResNet-n architectures, where “n” denotes the number of convolutional layers. Using CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 data sets, the authors conducted a comparative study to assess the impact of these functions on image classification accuracy. The approach included modifying the traditional ResNet models by replacing their static activation functions with the trainable variants, allowing for dynamic adaptation during training. The performance was evaluated based on accuracy metrics and loss profiles across different network depths.

Findings

The findings indicate that trainable activation functions, particularly CosLU, can significantly enhance the performance of deep learning models, outperforming the traditional ReLU in deeper network configurations on the CIFAR-10 data set. CosLU showed the highest improvement in accuracy, whereas DELU and ReLUN offered varying levels of performance enhancements. These functions also demonstrated potential in reducing overfitting and improving model generalization across more complex data sets like CIFAR-100, suggesting that the adaptability of activation functions plays a crucial role in the training dynamics of deep neural networks.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the field of deep learning by introducing and evaluating the impact of three novel trainable activation functions within widely used ResNet architectures. Unlike previous works that primarily focused on static activation functions, this research demonstrates that incorporating trainable nonlinearities can lead to significant improvements in model performance and adaptability. The introduction of CosLU, DELU and ReLUN provides a new pathway for enhancing the flexibility and efficiency of neural networks, potentially setting a new standard for future deep learning applications in image classification and beyond.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the “Standards + Certification” regional quality brand initiative has become a key component of China’s efforts to promote a quality-driven economy, this paper aims to examine the effect of perception, trust and satisfaction toward the regional quality brand on consumer loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 401 consumers who have bought “Zhejiang Manufacturing” regional quality brand products. The structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was applied to assess the relationship of the research model.

Findings

The results show that brand perception, trust and satisfaction toward regional quality brands all significantly positively impact both consumer behavioral and attitudinal loyalty. Further, the results confirmed that brand trust and satisfaction fully mediate the relationship between brand perception and behavioral loyalty and partially mediate the relationship between brand perception and attitudinal loyalty.

Originality/value

This study presents a conceptual model on the impact of perception toward regional quality brands on consumer loyalty in a field where little research has been done. It offers a consumer-focused analysis that advances the theoretical and empirical knowledge of regional quality brands.

Abstract

Purpose

As an effective tool to promote rational resource allocation and facilitate the development of green management practices such as enterprise digital innovation, the green credit policy has recently gained extensive attention. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between green credit policies and the digital innovation of enterprises, and to further explore the mechanism of action between them and their boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on micro-level data on Chinese firms from 2007 to 2019, this paper constructs a difference-in-differences (DID) model to investigate the impact and intrinsic mechanisms of green credit policies on firms' digital innovation and its boundary conditions, with the help of a quasi-natural experiment, i.e. the Green Credit Guidelines.

Findings

Green credit policies inhibit digital innovation and fail to compensate for innovation. The analysis of the mechanism shows that the implementation of green credit policies has a negative impact on digital innovation by increasing the financing constraints faced by firms, and has also a crowding-out effect on R&D investment, resulting in a disincentive to digital innovation. Further analysis reveals that the negative impact of green credit policies on digital innovation is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, enterprises without financially experienced executives, and in the eastern regions of China.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence to understand the effectiveness and mechanism of influence of green credit policies on enterprise digital innovation, providing also a basis to further improve green credit policies.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the cognitive–affective–conative framework, this study aims to develop a model of service robot acceptance in the hospitality sector by incorporating both cognitive evaluations and affective responses.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods was used to develop measurement and test research hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that five cognitive evaluations (i.e. cuteness, coolness, courtesy, utility and autonomy) significantly influence consumers’ positive affect, leading to customer acceptance intention. Four cognitive evaluations (cuteness, interactivity, courtesy and utility) significantly influence consumers’ negative affect, which in turn positively affects consumer acceptance intention.

Practical implications

This study provides significant implications for the design and implementation of service robots in the hospitality and tourism sector.

Originality/value

Different from traditional technology acceptance models, this study proposed a model based on the hierarchical relationships of cognition, affect and conation to enhance knowledge about human–robot interactions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the effect of the establishment of bankruptcy courts on bond issuance market. This paper helps to predict that the introduction of bankruptcy courts in China can mitigate price distortions caused by the implicit government guarantees and promote the development of the high-risk bond market.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper exploits the staggered introduction of bankruptcy courts across cities to implement a differences-in-differences strategy on bond issuance data. Using bonds issued in China between 2018 and 2020, the impact of bankruptcy courts on the bond issuance market can be analyzed.

Findings

This paper reveals that bond issuance credit spreads increase and is more sensitive to firm size, profitability and downside risk of issuance entity after the introduction of bankruptcy courts. It also reveals a substantive increase in bond issuance quantity and a decrease in issuer credit ratings following the establishment of bankruptcy courts. In addition, the increase of credit spreads is more prominent for publicly traded bonds, those whose issuers located in provinces with lower judicial confidence, bonds issued by SOEs and bonds with stronger government guarantees. Finally, the role of bankruptcy courts is more pronounced in regions with higher marketization.

Originality/value

This paper relates to previous studies that investigate the impact of laws and institutions on external financing. It helps provide new evidence to this literature on how improvements of efficiency and quality in bankruptcy enforcements relate to the marketization of bond issuance. The results provide further evidence on legal institutions and bond financing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to present a holistic review of journal articles on value cocreation in the tourism and hospitality field. By distinguishing similarities and differences in the contexts of China and other regions, the authors identify targeted research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected 438 English articles and 31 Chinese articles on value cocreation in tourism and hospitality published in the Web of Science, Scopus and China National Knowledge Infrastructure online databases. After analyzing the study location of all articles in the sample, the authors identified 79 English-language articles that adopted China as the context of the study. The first data set included non-China-focused publications and the second data set included China-focused publications. A comparative bibliometric methodology was conducted.

Findings

The results indicate similarities and differences between the two data sets in terms of research methods, topics and future research directions. Seven major concepts were identified in the first data set: hospitality value cocreation; the value generation process; key stakeholders; outcome variables; the application of service-dominant logic; peer-to-peer accommodation and destination management. Four research focuses were identified in the second data set: the application of customer-dominant logic; the value generation process; resource integration and the cocreation experience.

Research limitations/implications

This research contributes to the understanding of tourism and hospitality cocreation systems through literature analysis and encourages future research on the nexus of the Chinese and global contexts. This systematic investigation extends the concept of value cocreation by integrating its implementation process and value categories and further evaluates the consequences and benefits of value cocreation, which helps clarify how winners and losers can adjust their strategies accordingly.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in the adopted comparative bibliometric analysis which comprehensively reviewed and compared the characteristics of value cocreation research across two contexts. In addition, the study dialectically assesses Chinese tourism cocreation phenomena and their impacts from a global perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effects of job crafting on the work engagement of tour leaders mediated by person-job fit and the meaningfulness of work.

Design/methodology/approach

Derived from a sample of 331 tour leaders in China, the data for this research were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings revealed that job crafting increased tour leaders’ person-job fit and meaningfulness of work, which stimulated their work engagement. Tour leaders’ person-job fit also increased their work engagement and perceptions of the meaningfulness of work. Enhancing the work meaningfulness of tour leaders can significantly increase their work engagement. Person-job fit and meaningfulness of work had a significant mediating effect between job crafting and tour leaders’ work engagement.

Practical implications

Managers need to provide external conditions for tour leaders’ job crafting by expanding structural and social job resources and by creating more stimulating job environments. Managers can enhance tour leaders’ work engagement by shaping their work meaning and person-job fit.

Originality/value

First, this study empirically tested the effects of job crafting on tour leaders’ work engagement, thus directly addressed the lack of academic attention paid to this topic. Second, this study examines the mediating role of person-job fit and meaningfulness of work, with regard to tour leaders’ job crafting and work engagement, based on an integrative concept model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate three types of textures designed to enhance the tribological performance of static and dynamic pressure thrust bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

To explore the effects of different types of textures on tribological performance, the Reynolds equation is modified using lubrication theory and computational fluid dynamics methods while considering the influence of cavitation and turbulence on the physical field. In addition, the tribological performance is optimized through an improved selection algorithm based on Pareto envelope (PESA).

Findings

The results indicate that textured thrust bearings exhibit superior tribological performance compared to untextured ones. The circular texture outperforms other textures in terms of load-bearing and friction performance, with improvements of approximately 28.8% and 18.9%, respectively. In addition, the triangular texture exhibits the most significant temperature improvement, with a reduction of approximately 1.93%.

Originality/value

The study proposes three types of textures and evaluates the friction performance of thrust bearings by modifying the Reynolds equation. In addition, the optimal texture design is determined using an improved selection algorithm based on PESA.
