Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to clarify the relationship between the micro-structures of porous media and the coefficient of permeability. Most materials involve different types of defects like caves, pores and cracks, which are important characters of porous media and have a great influence on the physical properties of materials. To study the seepage mechanical characteristics of damaged porous media, the constitutive model of porous media dealing with coupled modeling of pores damage and its impact on permeability property of a deforming media was studied in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper opted for an exploratory study using the approach of continuum damage mechanics (CDM).

Findings

The paper provides some new insights on the fluid dynamics of porous media. The dynamic evolution model of permeability coefficient established in this paper can be used to model the fluid flow problems in damaged porous media. Moreover, the modified Darcy's law developed in this paper is considered to be an extension of the Darcy's law for fluid flow and seepage in a porous medium.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to the limitations of time, conditions, funds, etc., the research results should be subject to multifaceted experiments before their innovative significance can be fully verified.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for the development of fluid dynamics of porous media.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified need to study the relationship between the micro-structures of porous media and the coefficient of permeability.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the friction heat conduction and entransy of two friction linings in the high‐speed slide accident of a mine friction hoist.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the dynamic thermophysical properties were analyzed and their fitting equations were also obtained. Additionally, the dynamic heat partition ratio was obtained according to the dynamic thermophysical properties. Then, a simple method was developed to solve the temperature rise of friction lining. Finally, based on the theoretical model of temperature rise, the entransy of friction lining with respect to T and t were gained.

Findings

The error of temperature rise between simulation result and experiment result is less than 7 per cent, which proves that the theoretical model is correct. The entransy decreases with the temperature below 40°C and it increases after 40°C. The entransy of lining K is a little higher than that of lining G within 19 s, but the entransy of lining G is much higher than lining K after 19 s and the entransy difference gets great gradually. It is indicated that the lining K has good heat‐resistant property which is of great benefit to the tribological property of friction lining.

Practical implications

The authors' study provides a fundamental basis for developing a new friction lining with good heat‐resistant property, and it also brings forward a new quantitative method to evaluate the heat‐transfer capability of friction materials.

Originality/value

A simple method was introduced to calculate the temperature rise of friction lining with the consideration of dynamic thermophysical properties and dynamic heat partition ratio. And the entransy of friction lining was obtained to evaluate the heat‐transfer capability of friction linings quantitatively.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a long-term vibration monitoring system for track beams of suspended maglev trains to ensure safe and smooth operation of the trains.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper begins by focusing on the selection of hardware for the wireless monitoring and acquisition terminal and the circuit design. It connects to a wireless Access Point (AP) via Wi-Fi and utilizes the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) to upload the sensor data collected by the monitoring terminal to the upper computer. Additionally, the design includes software for the upper computer to parse the uploaded data packets and create a visualization interface, which is crucial for monitoring the vibrations of the track beams.

Findings

The vibration monitoring system developed in this study can display the data collected by the monitoring terminal in real time on the upper computer, while also allowing remote commands to query the status of the monitoring terminal. Due to the low-power design of the monitoring and acquisition terminal, it is capable of meeting the long-term vibration monitoring requirements for the track beams. Through precision testing of the monitoring terminal, we can ensure that the sensors meet experimental requirements, providing reliable data support for scientific research.

Originality/value

The vibration monitoring system presented in this paper integrates modern wireless communication technology and data visualization technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Aluminum tripolyphosphate was used as a corrosion inhibitor in a simulated concrete pore solution. For studies of the inhibition mechanism of aluminum tripolyphosphate on the carbon steel, its influence on the pitting initiation on the carbon steel in a Cl containing pore solution were investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Potentiodynamic polarization curves, Mott–Schottky plots and potentiostatic polarization of the carbon steel in the pore solution with different content of aluminum tripolyphosphate were measured, as well as the optical micrographs of pitting on the carbon steel was observed.

Findings

The metastable pitting potential and the stable pitting potential increased, while the donor density and the flat band potential decreased with the concentration of aluminum tripolyphosphate in solution. Furthermore, the initiation of pitting was suppressed, as well as the transition from metastable to stable pitting was hindered by the aluminum tripolyphosphate. The scale parameter (a), in the extreme distribution of the maximum current peak, could be used to predict the transition from metastable to stable pitting.

Originality/value

The inhibition mechanism of aluminum tripolyphosphate on carbon steel in pore solution was revealed. It suppresses the initiation of pitting and hinders the transition from metastable to stable pitting. Furthermore, a parameter defined as the scale parameter (a) in the extreme distribution of the maximum current peak was introduced to predict the transition from metastable to stable pitting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the changes of the scale of urban tourists in mainland China under the impact of COVID-19 and, specifically, the following questions: how did the scale of domestic tourists change nationwide and in the seven geographic regions? What are the differences in the changes among the seven geographic regions? What are the changes in the hot spot areas and spatial clustering of domestic tourists across the country?

Design/methodology/approach

Using the data of domestic tourist arrivals in 337 cities in mainland China from 2018 to 2021, this research analyzes the absolute differences and relative differences in the scale of domestic tourists nationwide and in seven geographic divisions with the help of indicators such as range analysis, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and Herfindahl–Hirschman Index and explores the changes in the hot spot areas and spatial concentration degree of the spatial scale of domestic tourists nationwide under the influence of the epidemic using kernel density analysis and spatial auto-correlation analysis.

Findings

The absolute differences in all seven geographical divisions continue to increase during 2018–2021. The domestic tourism in southwest China is extremely uneven. Absolute differences in the northwest and northeast regions are relatively small, and the development in attracting domestic tourists is more balanced. Relative differences in southwest China are comparatively large, with the trend of uneven development being obvious. The northeast, northwest and eastern regions of China are small, and the development is more balanced. The popularity of domestic tourism in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, as well as the Yangtze River Delta region, continues to decline and then pick up in 2021. The inland southwest region became a new domestic tourism hot spot in 2021. The size of domestic tourists from 2018 to 2021 in mainland China cities shows a significant positive spatial correlation, and there is a spatial agglomeration phenomenon, but some regional agglomeration types change from 2018 to 2021.

Research limitations/implications

The impact of the epidemic on the number and spatial scale of domestic tourism in China has been clarified, which makes up for the comparison of domestic tourism changes before and after the epidemic. A clear understanding of the changes in the number and spatial scale of domestic tourists in different regions after the epidemic is conducive to the development of domestic tourism revitalization strategies in accordance with the actual situation of each province and promotes the internal circulation of Chinese tourism.

Practical implications

This paper tries to clarify the quantitative scale of domestic tourism in different regions after the epidemic, which is conducive to the development of domestic tourism revitalization strategies in cities in different regions according to regional characteristics and the actual situation of each province and to promote the healthy operation of the internal circulation of tourism in China. This paper also tries to show the changes of domestic tourism market hot spots, agglomeration conditions changes before and after the outbreak and the clarity of tourists’ preference space changes.

Abstract

Purpose

Cloud manufacturing (CMfg) is a networked manufacturing mode that promotes the agile, service-oriented, green and intelligent development of the manufacturing industry. Although some scholars have reviewed related studies of CMfg from multiple perspectives, these reviews are not fully systematic or well justified and fail to fully reveal the key characteristics in the development process of CMfg. The purpose of this paper is to systematically review the relevant research on CMfg via identification of key characteristics of definition, architecture, supporting technology and application of CMfg to provide critical information in decision support for the innovation and development of CMfg.

Design/methodology/approach

This study systematically reviews the relevant research on CMfg across theoretical methods to technical applications by integrating quantitative and qualitative methods. Word cloud method is used to quantitatively analyse the structure and feature of different definitions of CMfg. The principle of System Science is used to explore the basic components and functions of various CMfg architectures and their common and differing characteristics. A multi-level technology framework is developed to explore the development status of CMfg supporting technologies. A multi-stage application classification is proposed to reveal the application status of CMfg.

Findings

Through literature review, this study found that CMfg architecture is currently dominated by general architectures and lacks architectures that fit the actual enterprise characteristics; CMfg supporting technology is mature in the traditional cloud computing-based technology, but it is still weak in the development of virtualization and servitization technology, service scheduling technology; CMfg application is still in the initial stage and still lacks a relatively complete system application. By analysing the development status of CMfg, this study also identified potential research directions of CMfg in information management, service composition and evaluation, system application and sustainable development and other aspects.

Research limitations/implications

This paper predominantly focuses on journal articles and some key conference papers published in English and Chinese. Chinese articles account for more than half of the total. The reason is that CMfg was proposed by the Chinese and CMfg is suitable for the development of China's manufacturing industry because of China's intelligent manufacturing environment. It is believed that this research has reached a reliable comprehensiveness that can help scholars and practitioners establish new research directions and evaluate their work in CMfg.

Originality/value

Prior literature reviews ignore the identification and analysis of key feature identification for the current development of CMfg, including common and unique feature identification of different CMfg architectures and functions, multi-layer analysis and interpretation of CMfg technology and different stage analysis of CMfg applications. This study addresses these limitations and provides a comprehensive literature review.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction industry has a significant function in improving the quality of life in the urban environment; meanwhile, greening the supply chain is becoming a seriously pressing issue in the construction industry. This paper seeks to select green suppliers in construction projects implemented at Iranian state universities via multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) models through rough set theory.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed methodology design was conducted through a literature review of studies concerned with green suppliers to identify the related criteria and the rough MCDM techniques. As such, 15 criteria were finalized through content validity ratio (introduced by Lawshe, 1975). The weights of the criteria were calculated through the rough AHP and the suppliers were prioritized using the rough TOPSIS to contribute to the Construction Department.

Findings

The study proposed a hierarchical structure of the decision process for green supplier selection in construction projects. According to the weighting results, environmental awareness, green social responsibility and the environmental management system were the most important criteria.

Research limitations/implications

Because the scope of the study was limited to state universities and the methods worked according to the experts' views, the results should be generalized with more caution. The validity of the results should be examined by applying the model to similar contexts.

Originality/value

The study conceptualizes green supplier selection in construction projects at state universities. Furthermore, the method used makes it possible to deal with the uncertainty arising from experts' limited awareness of only part of the problem rather than the whole system under investigation.
