Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a closed hydrostatic guideway has the ability to resist large-side load, pitch moments and yaw moments, has good stiffness and damping characteristics, and provides certain beneficial guidance for the design of large-span closed hydrostatic guideway on the basis of providing a large vertical load bearing capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

The Reynolds’ equation and flow continuity equation are solved simultaneously by the finite difference method, and the perturbation method and the finite disturbance method is used for calculating the dynamic characteristics. The static and dynamic characteristics, including recess pressure, flow of lubricating oil, carrying capacity, pitch moment, yaw moment, dynamic stiffness and damping, are comprehensively analyzed.

Findings

The designed closed hydrostatic guideway has the ability to resist large lateral load, pitch moment and yaw moment and has good stiffness and damping characteristics, on the basis of being able to provide large vertical carrying capacity, which can meet the application requirements of heavy two-plate injection molding machine (TPIMM).

Originality/value

This paper researches static and dynamic characteristics of a large-span six-slider closed hydrostatic guideway used in heavy TPIMM, emphatically considering pitch moment and yaw moment. Some useful guidance is given for the design of large-span closed hydrostatic guideway.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of hole on shielding effectiveness (SE) of electromagnetic shielding (EMS) fabric under incident polarization wave, and to propose a “Key Size” theory to explain the influence mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

“Key Size” parameters describing hole shape are established, and a number of representative samples with rectangular and oval holes are made. SE of the samples are tested by waveguide testing system. Influence of the hole on the SE of the samples is analyzed according to vertical or horizontal maximum size and polarization wave direction. Finally, the “Key Size theory” and “Secondary Size theory” are proposed to explain the influencing mechanism.

Findings

The hole influences on the SE are related to the vertical and the horizontal maximum size of the holes and the direction of the polarization wave. As the direction of the polarization wave is vertical (or horizontal), greater maximum size results in lower SE. As the maximum size is constant, greater maximum size causes lower SE. As the maximum size reaches to a certain value, a dividing point of the SE occurs. As the direction of the polarization wave is consistent with the direction of the maximum size, same hole area results in same SE.

Originality/value

The explored influences and mechanism provide an important guiding reference for the hole design of the EMS fabric, and can be applied to the holes design of the EMS garment, composite materials, and tents.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of China's contemporary banking regulatory system, with particular focus on regulatory control of foreign banks trading in China. The paper addresses three aspects of Chinese banking regulation: what does China regulate; why does China regulate; and how does China regulate. Much of the discussion is concerned with China's regulatory agencies particularly with the role of the CBRC as the principal regulator in China's banking sector.

Design/methodology/approach

In the first instance the paper presents an overview of banking regulatory models gained from a review of theoretical literature in the area. Then through a wide ranging review of Chinese publications, both academic and official, the paper seeks to relate the course of regulatory reform in China, both in terms of compliance with orthodox regulatory theory, and the unique regulatory requirements of the Chinese banking system.

Findings

The paper recognises that China has embraced the need for banking regulation with the establishment of an institutional structure that is responsive to both banking supervision and government policy. Within that structure the role of the CBRC, the pervasive manner in which that agency operates, and the content of its regulatory output have been identified and critically reviewed.

Originality/value

In its review of the modernization of China's banking regulatory system, the paper achieves originality from the author's research into, and critical reflections on Chinese generated literature, both institutional and academic, which is then communicated in a manner that will be understood by readers familiar with Western banking regulatory theory.

Abstract

Purpose

In acoustic detection technology, optical microcavities offer higher detection bandwidth and sensitivity than traditional acoustic sensors. However, research on acoustic detection technologies involving optical microcavities has not yet been reported. Therefore, this paper aims to design and construct an underwater acoustic detection system based on optical microcavities and study its acoustic detection technology to improve its performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the principles of optical microcavity acoustic sensors, a signal-detection circuit was designed to form a detection system in conjunction with a laser, an optical waveguide resonator and an oscilloscope. This circuit consists of two modules: a photodetection module and a filter amplification module.

Findings

The photodetection module features a baseline noise of −106.499 dBm and can detect device spectral line depths of up to 2410 mV. The gain stability of the filter amplification module was 58 dB ± 1 dB with a noise gain of −107.626 dBm. This design allows the acoustic detection system to detect signals with high sensitivity within the 10 Hz−1.2 MHz frequency band, achieving a maximum sensitivity of −126 dB re 1 V/µPa at 800 Hz and a minimum detectable pressure (MDP) of 0.37 mPa/Hz1/2, corresponding to a noise equivalent pressure (NEP) of 51.36 dB re 1 V/µPa.

Originality/value

This study designs and constructs a broadband underwater acoustic detection system specifically for optical waveguide resonators based on the sensing principles of silicon dioxide optical waveguide resonators. Experiments demonstrated that the signal detection module improves the sensitivity of underwater acoustic detection based on optical waveguides.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how consumers respond to global brands adapting to local elements. Specifically, this study identified three factors (i.e., cultural compatibility, cultural elements authenticity and cultural pride) affecting the purchase intentions (PIs) toward global brands using Chinese elements among Chinese consumers in China and Chinese immigrants in North America. Another aim is to examine the moderating role of acculturation in the relationship between cultural pride and PIs among Chinese immigrants.

Design/methodology/approach

Three studies were conducted to test the hypotheses in China and North America. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to confirm the factor structure. Hierarchical regression was used to test the main effects and moderated regression analysis was used to test the moderation effect.

Findings

Results show that cultural compatibility, cultural elements authenticity (CEA) and cultural pride positively affect the PIs toward global brands with Chinese elements for both Chinese consumers and Chinese immigrants. Further, among Chinese immigrants, acculturation moderates the relationship between cultural pride and PIs.

Originality/value

This study explored the factors influencing the PIs toward global brands using Chinese elements, filling a research gap. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine how perceived CEA affects consumers’ PIs toward global brands with Chinese elements. Further, the findings have implications for global brands that want to target Chinese consumers and Chinese immigrants in overseas markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an up-to-date survey on the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique with co-operative strategy, a fast-evolving fifth-generation (5 G) technology. NOMA is used for serving many mobile users, both in power and code domains. This paper considers the power-domain NOMA, which is now discussed as NOMA.

Design/methodology/approach

The first part of the paper discusses NOMA-based cooperative relay systems using different relay strategies over different channel models. In various research works, the analytical expressions of many performance metrics were derived, measured and simulated for better performance of the NOMA systems. In the second part, a brief introduction to diversity techniques is discussed. The multiple input and multiple output system merged with cooperative NOMA technology, and its future challenges were also presented in this part. In the third part, the paper surveys some new conceptions such as cognitive radio, index modulation multiple access, space-shift keying and reconfigurable intelligent surface that can be combined with NOMA systems for better performance.

Findings

The paper presents a brief survey of diverse research projects being carried out in the field of NOMA. The paper also surveyed two different relaying strategies that were implemented in cooperative NOMA over different channels and compared several performance parameters that were evaluated and derived in these implementations.

Originality/value

The paper provides a scope for recognizable future work and presents a brief idea of the new techniques that can be united with NOMA for better performance in wireless systems.

Abstract

The pressurizer is one of the critical components in a nuclear reactor, whose main function is to maintain the primary system pressure within specific boundaries. The pressurizer is a large vessel that is made of carbon or low‐alloy steel shell, clad internally with a layer of stainless steel. It works with high temperature, high humidity and high pressure. The crack defects that would probably appear in the internal surface of the vessel must be detected and recorded, as well as changes to any existing known cracks. This paper presents an implementation of a mobile robot, which can sense and transmit the image of the internal surface to a remote analysis center, where the image is processed and recorded. A neural network‐based pattern classifier is employed to assist inspectors to detect the flaws that appear in the surface of the vessel. Because the real‐life defects rarely exist in the pressurizer, the training of the network becomes very difficult. A new algorithm is exploited to solve the problem. General considerations about the robot design are also presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the quality factors influencing customer satisfaction in the electronic commerce (e-commerce) context using a triadic view of customer-e-retailer-third-party logistics provider, and to investigate the impacts of service quality on customer satisfaction and loyalty in the e-retailing supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review is used to determine the conceptual model and develop the measurement scales. Data are collected through a web survey mainly conducted in China. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the collected data and test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The results verify the proposed service quality framework, consisting of two dimensions (electronic service (e-service) quality and logistics service quality), in the e-commerce context. The results indicate that e-service quality and logistics service quality are strongly linked to customer satisfaction; that is, with e-service and logistics service, respectively. e-Service quality positively impacts customer satisfaction with logistics services, but logistics service quality negatively impacts customer satisfaction with e-services. Moreover, customer satisfaction with e-services is positively associated with customer loyalty for both e-services and logistics services. However, customer satisfaction with logistics services has no direct impact on related customer loyalty, and negatively impacts customer loyalty with e-services.

Research limitations/implications

The survey focusses only on China; future data should verify whether different cultural backgrounds will impact the research results.

Practical implications

The results show that e-retailers should not only focus on e-service quality, but also logistics service quality, which is critical to the success of e-commerce.

Originality/value

A two-dimensional (e-service and logistics) service quality framework is proposed and empirically assessed in the context of the e-retailing supply chain. These impacts of the path of service quality on customer satisfaction and loyalty are highlighted.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of aluminum addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn-xAl (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 Wt.%) alloys were prepared by the conventional gravity casting technology, and then microstructures, phase composition and mechanical properties were investigated by material characterization method, systematically.

Findings

Results show that the as-cast microstructure of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy mainly consists of a-Mg matrix as well as Mg12REZn (18 R LPSO structure), and island-like Mg3(RE, Zn) phase is distributed at the grain boundary. The addition of a small amount of Al (0.5 Wt.%) can decrease the content of island-like Mg3(RE, Zn) phase, but significantly increase the content of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure, resulting in the improvement of both tensile strength and elongation of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy. However, the addition of excessive Al will consume Re element and decrease the amount of LPSO structure, leading to the decrease of tensile properties. When the content of Al is 0.5 Wt.%, the tensile strength and elongation are 225 MPa and 9.0% of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy, which are 14% and 29% higher than that of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy, respectively.

Originality/value

Adding aluminum to Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy strengthens its mechanical properties. And the effect of Al content on the alloy strengthening. The formation mechanism of LPSO structure with different aluminum content was revealed.
