Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate rural people's perception of income adequacy in order to understand how it is affected by income in the county where the respondent lives, age of household members, as well as number of household members. The paper also aims to find out how poverty lines and poverty counts derived from people's perception relate to what has been previously reported.

Design/methodology/approach

The Subjective Poverty Line (SPL) methodology is modified by asking one question on the amount of grains necessary for the respondent's household and another on the amount of cash necessary. Information was obtained from a large survey covering 22 provinces in 2003 and analysed using regressions analysis.

Findings

People in high‐income counties perceive that more cash, but not grains are needed than those living in low‐income counties. Respondents perceive that economies of scale exist in amounts of cash needed for a household. They also perceive that young children need less grain than adults and that a schoolchild incurs higher money expenditures than an adult. A poverty line for rural China derived by the SPL methodology is higher than the low income line used by the National Bureau of Statistics for 2002. However, a poverty count based on the SPL methodology is similar to what has been reported.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that poverty lines for rural China preferably should consider not only spatial differences in cost of living but also the number of household members in a non‐linear way.

Originality/value

The paper describes the first application of the SPL approach to rural China.

Abstract

Purpose

The shared development concept is crucial for the construction of a socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This is because shared development constitutes the logic thread of the socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics and the core for the formation and development of its whole system.

Findings

China’s modernization is well underway and is following a unique path with its own characteristics, whereby shared development is undoubtedly one of its core values.

Originality/value

In the new era, the development path under the concept of shared development of socialism with Chinese characteristics must adhere to the all-round development of human beings, promote social equity and justice via development, and embrace inclusive growth, specifically, pro-poor growth.

This study aims to uncover the mechanisms behind the marginalization of county-level public libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to uncover the mechanisms behind the marginalization of county-level public libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The research surveyed 25 counties in central China, including Hubei, Chongqing, Hunan, and Guizhou provinces. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with library directors and deputy directors, focusing on main and branch library construction, cultural inclusivity, library assessment, and digital services.

Findings

Contributing factors to library marginalization were identified as economic pressure, institutional domain, longstanding issues, organizational entity, and societal misconceptions. Building on this, the study introduces the HBAC model to explain county-level public library marginalization. Considering the actual social context of these libraries, the article proposes a “3 + 1” approach to mitigate their marginalization.

Originality/value

The research methodology, analysis process, theoretical model, and recommendations provided could shed light on academic research and practical exploration in the field of public libraries globally.

Abstract

Social movements can disrupt existing industries and inspire the emergence of new markets by drawing attention to problems with the status quo and promoting alternatives. We examine how the influence of social movements on entrepreneurial activity evolves as the markets they foster mature. Theoretically, we argue that the success of social movements in furthering market expansion leads to three related outcomes. First, the movement-encouraged development of market infrastructure reduces the need for continued social movement support. Second, social movements’ efforts on behalf of new markets increase the importance of resource availability for market entry. Third, market growth motivates countermovement that reduce the beneficial impact of initiator movements on entrepreneurial activity. We test these arguments by analyzing evolving social movement dynamics and entrepreneurial activity in the US wind power industry from 1992 to 2007. We discuss the implications of our findings for the study of social movements, stakeholder management, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the pipe-type electromagnetic induction heating device under power frequency condition.

Design/methodology/approach

To reduce eddy current loss and improve heating efficiency, the structure of a pipe-type power-frequency electromagnetic heating device was optimized. Based on the maximum load flow formula, a parallel excitation winding structure is designed, and the distribution of electromagnetic field under four different powers is analyzed by simulation. Four heating modes were proposed according to the structure of diversion ring, inner wall and outer wall. Two heating modes with better heating effect were obtained by comprehensively considering the factors such as magnetic field distribution, thermal power and energy consumption.

Findings

The double-wall structure of the pipe-type electromagnetic heating device can make the heat source distribution more uniform, and the use of power-frequency power supply can increase security, the installation of diversion ring can make the heating more sufficient and the heating efficiency of the two heating methods selected according to the structural performance is more than 90%.

Originality/value

In view of the medium or high frequency of pipe-type electromagnetic heating device, it is necessary to configure high power electronic frequency conversion drive system, and eddy current can only be produced on the tube wall, resulting in uneven distribution of heat sources. A pipe-type power-frequency electromagnetic heating device with double-wall structure was proposed.
