Abstract
Purpose
This research aims to investigate the trajectory tracking problem for a four-wheel independent drive autonomous vehicle (4WID) and propose an integrated, coordinated control strategy to address the mutual interference between trajectory tracking and stability control in extreme cases.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors establish an adaptive preview model that modifies the preview distance based on vehicle speed. They utilize a three-degrees-of-freedom vehicle model and employ model predictive control to calculate the necessary front wheel angle for trajectory tracking. In terms of longitudinal control, a longitudinal coordinated control mechanism is established to achieve the two conflicting objectives of trajectory tracking accuracy and dynamic stability through early deceleration. A stability controller based on sliding mode control (SMC) is designed, considering tire constraints and tracking the optimal yaw angle and sideslip angle. Furthermore, a lateral coordinated control strategy is developed, considering the weight coefficient of stability control, and the yaw moment is calculated and distributed based on the vehicle torque requirements.
Findings
The proposed integrated, coordinated control strategy successfully addresses the mutual interference between trajectory tracking and stability control in extreme cases for the 4WID vehicle. The strategy achieves trajectory tracking accuracy, dynamic stability and reduced energy consumption while taking into account tire constraints.
Originality/value
We have proposed a cooperative control strategy for the trajectory tracking problem of autonomous driving vehicles. This strategy is different from previous methods in that we have taken into account the integrated dynamic control in both longitudinal and lateral directions, balancing the conflicting control requirements and reducing energy consumption, improving trajectory tracking accuracy and vehicle dynamic stability. We have verified the feasibility of this strategy through joint simulation under different driving conditions.

Abstract
Purpose
The logistics industry has benefited hugely from the growth of e-commerce. The logistics and transportation industry operators have realized that higher-quality service and logistics management provides the competitive edge as the primary channel of communication with consumers. Digital voice assistants (DVA) is an information system based on an artificial intelligence framework that can interact through voice, such that a deliveryman can query for or use information in a relatively short time. The purpose of this paper is to explore the value of DVA in logistic service.
Design/methodology/approach
This study aims to develop a framework for innovation and logistics service capabilities of logistics and transportation services to structure a model based on the analysis hierarchy process method to discuss the factors considered when adopting DVA.
Findings
The results of this study implied that common problem and expectations of current operators in the delivery of goods and their expectations of DVA.
Practical implications
Innovative operations and planning are possible with information technology-enabled logistic services. It is important to identify relevant DVA development avenues.
Originality/value
The purpose of this study is to show which factors are significant to the logistics and transportation industry using DVA to aid the deliverymen, and it provides guidance for manager evaluating adopted DVA and its object.

Abstract
Purpose
Environmental risks (ERs) are critical to any highway construction project (HCP). One of the main contracting parties responsible for ERs is the contractor. Hence, it has been crucial to look into ways to control ERs in HCPs from the contractor’s perspective. This study aims to investigate how ERs can be managed in HCP in Sri Lanka.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative research approach with three rounds of Delphi was used. Statistical techniques were used to analyse and validate the ERs, the parties to whom the risks were to be allocated, and risk management measures identified from the empirical data collection.
Findings
The study reveals the 11 most significant ERs for HCP. Further, the most significant ERs in HCP were mainly found to be the responsibility of contractors in Sri Lanka. Twenty-four most appropriate risk response measures were determined; 13 were found to be common measures that could be used to manage two or more risks, while the remaining 11 were unique to specific risks.
Originality/value
Overall, this research determines the most significant ERs in HCP, the best risk allocation among the parties and appropriate risk-handling strategies and measures for each significant ERs. Additionally, the study addresses the demand for ERs management in HCP.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to introduce and evaluate the COPULA framework, a construction project monitoring solution based on blockchain designed to address the inherent challenges of construction project monitoring and management. This research aims to enhance efficiency, transparency and trust within the dynamic and collaborative environment of the construction industry by leveraging the decentralized, secure and immutable nature of blockchain technology.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper employs a comprehensive approach encompassing the formulation of the COPULA model, the development of a digital solution using the ethereum blockchain and extensive testing to assess performance in terms of execution cost, time, integrity, immutability and security. A case analysis is conducted to demonstrate the practical application and benefits of blockchain technology in real-world construction project monitoring scenarios.
Findings
The findings reveal that the COPULA framework effectively addresses critical issues such as centralization, privacy and security vulnerabilities in construction project management. It facilitates seamless data exchange among stakeholders, ensuring real-time transparency and the creation of a tamper-proof communication channel. The framework demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance project efficiency and foster trust among all parties involved.
Research limitations/implications
While the study provides promising insights into the application of blockchain technology in construction project monitoring, future research could explore the integration of COPULA with existing project management methodologies to broaden its applicability and impact. Further investigations into the solution’s scalability and adaptation to various construction project types and sizes are also suggested.
Originality/value
This research offers a comprehensive blockchain solution specifically tailored for the construction industry. Unlike prior studies focusing on theoretical aspects, this paper presents a practical, end-to-end solution encompassing model formulation, digital implementation, proof-of-concept testing and validation analysis. The COPULA framework marks a significant advancement in the digital transformation of construction project monitoring, providing a novel approach to overcoming longstanding industry challenges.

Abstract
Purpose
In the past decade, three-dimensional (3D) printing has gained attention in areas such as medicine, engineering, manufacturing art and most recently in education. In biomedical, the development of a wide range of biomaterials has catalysed the considerable role of 3D printing (3DP), where it functions as synthetic frameworks in the form of scaffolds, constructs or matrices. The purpose of this paper is to present the state-of-the-art literature coverage of 3DP applications in tissue engineering (such as customized scaffoldings and organs, and regenerative medicine).
Design/methodology/approach
This review focusses on various 3DP techniques and biomaterials for tissue engineering (TE) applications. The literature reviewed in the manuscript has been collected from various journal search engines including Google Scholar, Research Gate, Academia, PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. The keywords that have been selected for the searches were 3 D printing, tissue engineering, scaffoldings, organs, regenerative medicine, biomaterials, standards, applications and future directions. Further, the sub-classifications of the keyword, wherever possible, have been used as sectioned/sub-sectioned in the manuscript.
Findings
3DP techniques have many applications in biomedical and TE (B-TE), as covered in the literature. Customized structures for B-TE applications are easy and cost-effective to manufacture through 3DP, whereas on many occasions, conventional technologies generally become incompatible. For this, this new class of manufacturing must be explored to further capabilities for many potential applications.
Originality/value
This review paper presents a comprehensive study of the various types of 3DP technologies in the light of their possible B-TE application as well as provides a future roadmap.
