Abstract

Purpose

The evolution of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) was nurtured by economists and accountants loyal to the philosophical basis of what is often referred to as “Western” market economies, being classical and neoclassical contracting theories. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how a particular Asian cultural attribute (guānxì ) impacts on the efficacy of fair value measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a literature review and research of studies of the adoption of IFRS in China, studies of both guānxì and fair value in Chinese accounting research, this study unbundles Williamson’s governance structure and contracting theory to examine how guānxì is positioned orthogonally to fair value (market-oriented valuation) principles for financial reporting. This is followed by a case study of the events surrounding the collapse of China Medical Technologies.

Findings

Guānxì is integral to Asian economies and economic transactions. Resulting conditions, characterised by relational contracting, may not meet the qualitative characteristics of neutrality and faithful representation in fair value measurement of assets and liabilities. The same may be true when insider or “trusted party transaction” values prevail for large ticket transactions among entities in any jurisdiction.

Research limitations/implications

Future research on the impact of guānxì may be constrained by its often hidden, and yet dynamic, character; and the varieties of its manifestations.

Originality/value

This study highlights how difficult it may be to achieve both comparability and relevance in the asset and liability recognition and measurement rules in Asian (and possibly also other) economies adopting accounting principles that are developed in a Western context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach for selecting the good heavy oil reservoirs to develop preferentially, which can avoid the huge economical loss resulted from wrong decision.

Design/methodology/approach

A new method of ranking the development priority of heavy oil reservoir is present, in which the neural network is applied for the first time to acquire reservoir parameters' weights through training samples and the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the joint weighs of neurons in case that neural network falling into local minimum. Additionally, the paper establishes subordinate function of every parameter. Eventually, comprehensive evaluation values of all heavy oil reservoirs are obtained.

Findings

The method can ensure the veracity and creditability of the parameters' weights, avoid the randomicity brought by experts.

Research limitations/implications

Accessibility of the data of many heavy oil reservoirs is the main limitation.

Practical implications

A very useful and new method for the decision makers of heavy oil reservoirs development.

Originality/value

The new approach of ranking the development priority of heavy oil reservoir based on the neural network and the genetic algorithm. The paper is aimed at the leaders who manage the development of heavy oil reservoirs.

Abstract

Purpose

A growing number of private, voluntary and mandatory sustainability standards have recently emerged. However, supply chain corruption practices as mechanisms to circumvent sustainability standards have also grown and occur regularly. This paper strives to elaborate theory on the intersection of institutional theory, business corruption and the sustainability standards literature by investigating factors that influence the emergence of supply chain corruption practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on secondary data, four in-depth case studies of supply chain corruption practices are investigated through the use of adaptive theory and the method of constant comparisons to elaborate theory on this important phenomenon.

Findings

The paper suggests that although sustainability standards can improve supply chain sustainability performance, if they are adopted only symbolically and not substantively, unanticipated outcomes such as supply chain corruption may occur. The study proposes a typology of supply chain corruption practices, further explores the symbolic adoption of sustainability standards in supply chains and proposes the novel construct of “social isomorphism for corruption.” Since focal companies play central roles in leading supply chain corruption practices, we reason that they can also play a pivotal role in preventing supply chain corruption practices by promoting the substantive adoption of sustainability standards across their supply chains.

Originality/value

This paper elaborates theory on the challenging phenomenon of corruption in supply chains by linking the supply chain management literature to the corruption and the sustainability discourses and offers important insights to aid our understanding on the topic. It generates six propositions and four contributions to the sustainable supply chain management theory, practice and policy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine if the participation of live-stream influencers (LSIs) affects tipping frequency on live streaming platforms, and further investigate the mediating and moderating mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

Quasi-experiment and difference-in-differences models are used for data analysis. Propensity score matching is used to address potential unobservable endogeneity.

Findings

Real-time live streaming data reveal that LSIs’ participation significantly improves tipping frequency in live streaming rooms. Also, more users are attracted to the live streaming rooms and more users become active in participation. Additionally, the positive impact of LSIs’ participation is enhanced in the live streaming rooms with a greater number of relationship links between users.

Research limitations/implications

The findings clarify the new role of influencers and reveal the mechanisms on how LSIs benefit the platforms.

Practical implications

The findings offer novel insights into implementing influencer marketing to interactive social media platforms, by encouraging influencer participation, user relationship building and influencer network growth.

Originality/value

This study highlights the value of LSIs for interactive social media platforms in terms of organic growth, revenue generation and cost reduction.

Abstract

Purpose

The torque ripple and fault-tolerant capability are the two main problems for the switched reluctance motors (SRMs) in applications. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to propose a novel 16/10 segmented SRM (SSRM) to reduce the torque ripple and improve the fault-tolerant capability in this work.

Design/methodology/approach

The stator of the proposed SSRM is composed of exciting and auxiliary stator poles, while the rotor consists of a series of discrete segments. The fault-tolerant and torque ripple characteristics of the proposed SSRM are studied by the finite element analysis (FEA) method. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the SSRM are compared with those of a conventional SRM with 8/6 stator/rotor poles. Finally, FEA and experimental results are provided to validate the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed SSRM.

Findings

It is found that the proposed novel 16/10 SSRM for the application in the belt-driven starter generator (BSG) possesses these functions: less mutual inductance and high fault-tolerant capability. It is also found that the proposed SSRM provides lower torque ripple and higher output torque. Finally, the experimental results validate that the proposed SSRM runs with lower torque ripple, better output torque and fault-tolerant characteristics, making it an ideal candidate for the BSG and similar systems.

Originality/value

This paper presents the analysis of torque ripple and fault-tolerant capability for a 16/10 segmented switched reluctance motor in hybrid electric vehicles. Using FEA simulation and building a test bench to verify the proposed SSRM’s superiority in both torque ripple and fault-tolerant capability.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a deep learning model that can be used to expand the number of samples. In the process of manufacturing and assembling electronic components on the printed circuit board in the surface mount technology production line, it is relatively easy to collect non-defective samples, but it is difficult to collect defective samples within a certain period of time. Therefore, the number of non-defective components is much greater than the number of defective components. In the process of training the defect detection method of electronic components based on deep learning, a large number of defective and non-defective samples need to be input at the same time.

Design/methodology/approach

To obtain enough electronic components samples required for training, a method based on the generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate training samples is proposed, and then the generated samples and real samples are used to train the convolutional neural networks (CNN) together to obtain the best detection results.

Findings

The experimental results show that the defect recognition method using GAN and CNN can not only expand the sample images of the electronic components required for the training model but also accurately classify the defect types.

Originality/value

To solve the problem of unbalanced sample types in component inspection, a GAN-based method is proposed to generate different types of training component samples and then the generated samples and real samples are used to train the CNN together to obtain the best detection results.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to clarify the relationship between the cone bit seal failure and the down-hole drilling fluid pressure and high temperature that occur during ultra-deep well drilling. It proposes that the contact pressure distribution under low pressure conditions is favourable for lubrication and the seal inner wear is serious under high pressure conditions. Furthermore, the more reliable cone bit seal can be obtained using the back propagation (BP) neural network and genetic algorithm (GA) to reduce the drilling cost.

Design/methodology/approach

The wear morphologies of the seal surface were analyzed using Contour GT-K to determine the seal contact pressure distribution. Then, the influences of the drilling fluid pressure and high temperature on the metal seal interface were analyzed using finite element method. The structural parameters of the seal under high pressure were optimized based on the BP neural network and GA.

Findings

This paper proposes that the inner seal contact pressure increases rapidly with an increase in the drilling fluid pressure. The design parameters of the seal components should be adjusted reasonably to ensure that the outer contact pressure is greater than the inner contact pressure, which is advantageous for forming a lubricant film on the inner side of the seal. The uneven temperature distribution of the seal surface will further aggravate seal failure.

Originality/value

Study on the bit seal with good property is significant in drilling application, and the optimized seal can prolong the cone bit life.

Abstract

Purpose

Previous literature tends to combine postponement and modularity or view them as parallel factors to achieve mass customization (MC) while ignoring the sequence of a firm to design and implement operations and supply chain strategy. Based on a customer-oriented strategy and theories of organizational information processing theory, three-dimensional (3D) concurrent engineering and resource dependency, the purpose of this paper is to propose a sequential model reflecting the sequence of practices as well as an overview picture for a firm to achieve MC.

Design/methodology/approach

The model links three company antecedents – postponement orientation, operational alignment and information sharing, to three company supply chain practices – product and process modularity and supplier segmentation. These practices, in turn, lead to the company’s MC capabilities. The proposed model is tested with a data set collected from automotive suppliers in China and in the USA. Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data and test the model.

Findings

The results suggest that, for suppliers to achieve MC, postponement orientation and operational alignment are vital antecedents. The results also reveal the important responsibility and role of information sharing practices in coordinating suppliers’ modularity practices.

Originality/value

This research provides three findings that are of value to both academicians and practitioners of supply chain management. First, this study originally proposed and empirically tested that a postponement orientation is an antecedent of product and process modularity and supplier segmentation to achieve MC in the automotive sector, contrary to the traditional view of parallel relationships for both. Second, it developed and verified measures of operational alignment and supplier segmentation for future research use. Third, the vital role of information sharing to coordinate internal and external supply chain practices to achieve MC is empirically supported.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the control method proposed in this paper is to address the problem of the poor anti-interference of the suspension winding current in the traditional bearingless induction motor (BL-IM) direct suspension force control process.

Design/methodology/approach

A model predictive direct suspension force control of a BL-IM based on sliding mode observer is proposed in this paper. The model predictive control (MPC) is introduced to the traditional direct suspension force control to improve the anti-interference of the suspension current. A sliding mode flux linkage observer is designed and applied to the MPC system, which reduces the error of the parameter observation and improves the robustness of the system. The strategy is designed and implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink and the two-level AC speed regulation platform.

Findings

The simulation and experimental results show that the performance of the BL-IM under the control method proposed in this paper is better than that under the traditional direct suspension force control, and the suspension performance of the motor and the anti-interference of the control system are improved.

Originality/value

This study helps to improve the suspension performance of the motor and the anti-interference of the control system.

Abstract

Purpose

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) create quasi-real social systems in which players can interact with one another, and quasi-real economic systems where players can consume and trade in-game items with virtual currency. The in-game currency price, an important indicator of a virtual economy, is highly contingent on players’ behavioral interaction in MMORPGs. The purpose of this paper is to adopt a network perspective to examine how topological characteristics of social networks in an MMORPG, namely, network externalities, density, and closure, would exert impacts on the in-game currency price.

Design/methodology/approach

Players’ behavioral data were collected from a popular MMORPG in China on a weekly basis for 52 weeks. With a time series analytical approach, the empirical model for the price function of in-game currency was estimated with vector autoregression.

Findings

The results show that the number of core avatars and network density are positively associated with in-game currency price, while network closure has a negative effect on in-game currency price. However, in-game currency price is found to have no significant relationship with the trade volume of the currency.

Originality/value

This study fills in an important research gap by investigating factors influencing the in-game currency price of MMORPGs from a network perspective, which contributes to the existing literature of network effects and advances our understanding about how players’ interaction will influence the dynamics of a virtual economy. The findings could offer useful insights for online game companies to better understand their players’ social interaction and consumption behavior.
