Abstract

Purpose

Consumers may boycott firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, but little is known about when, why and how they would respond in this way. Based on psychological contract violation and discount principles, the purpose of this paper is to argue that timing and fit of CSR activities are the main dimensions of consumers’ psychological contract. It is posited that CSR activities would be boycotted if consumers perceived violation of their psychological contract, and their altruistic tendency would have a moderating effect on this mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes the form of an empirical study using a sample of 434 respondents through scene-questionnaire survey in central China.

Findings

It is found that (1) low fit or reactive CSR activities would induce consumers’ psychological contract violation, and the latter has a more significant influence; (2) perceived CSR is negatively related with consumers’ boycott behaviors, but CSR activities would be boycotted if consumers’ psychological contracts are violated; (3) the negative relationship between perceived CSR and consumers’ boycott behaviors would be strengthened by consumers’ altruistic tendency, and the positive relationship between consumers’ psychological contract violation and their boycott behaviors would also be strengthened by their altruistic tendency.

Research limitations/implications

This paper has significant theoretical implications, as it answers the question that when, why and how CSR activities would be boycotted. Besides, it contributes to literature on psychological contract for applying it to CSR research field. Furthermore, the double-edged effect of consumers’ altruistic tendency extends literature on pro-social behaviors.

Social implications

This paper is of interests to corporate management and academics who wish to understand when and why consumers would boycott CSR activities and the factors that would relax consumers’ negative responses.

Originality/value

This is the first paper that investigates when, why and how CSR activities would be boycotted from the perspective of consumers’ psychological contract violation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of peers’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) on focal firms’ CSR from an integrated perspective. The current study aims to explore whether as peers’ CSR increases focal firms’ CSR would first decrease and then increase.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a sample consisting of Chinese listed manufacturing firms from 2010 to 2016. Hypotheses are tested by generalized least squares method to minimum heterogeneity and autocorrelation concern.

Findings

The results show that focal firms’ CSR would first decrease and then increase with the increase in peers’ CSR. Furthermore, this paper found that corporate visibility would stress more value on CSR differentiation strategy and environmental uncertainty would stress more value on CSR conformity strategy, such that the U-shaped relationship would be more pronounced in high corporate visibility or low environmental uncertainty situation.

Practical implications

The findings may be of interest to the academic researchers and managers. For researchers, it is important to understand how focal firms would practice CSR in response to peers’ CSR, especially through an integrated perspective. For managers, the results show that the best way to invest in CSR activities in response to peers’ CSR follows a U-shaped curve, and corporate visibility and environmental uncertainty are important factors to be considered to make CSR decisions.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature by proposing and examining a U-shaped relationship between peers’ CSR and focal firms’ CSR, which stresses the conformity and differentiation value of CSR simultaneously. Besides, to fully map the effects of peers’ CSR and focal firms’ CSR, this paper considers the moderating roles of internal and external contingencies on this non-linear relationship between the peers’ CSR and focal firms’ CSR.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the mechanical properties of sintered nanosilver with different porosities at both the mesoscopic and macroscopic scales and to conduct a multiscale analysis of the porosity effect on the mechanical properties of sintered nanosilver.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper establishes a mesoscopic model for the uniaxial tension of sintered nanosilver and a macroscopic model for chips containing sintered silver layers. Using the finite element method, combined with crystal plasticity theory and unified creep plasticity theory, a multiscale analysis is conducted for the mechanical properties of sintered nanosilver. First, stress distribution characteristics under uniaxial tensile loading for different porosities in sintered nanosilver polycrystal models are analyzed at the mesoscopic scale. Second, at the macroscopic scale, the mechanical performance of sintered nanosilver layers with varying porosities in high-power chip models under cyclic loading is analyzed. Finally, the porosity influence on the damage evolution in sintered nanosilver is summarized, and simulations are conducted to explore the evolution of damage parameters in sintered nanosilver under different porosities.

Findings

In the mesoscopic model, the presence of mesoscale voids affects the stress distribution in sintered nanosilver subjected to tensile loading. Sintered nanosilver with lower porosity exhibits higher tensile strength. In the macroscopic model, sintered nanosilver layers with lower porosity correspond to a more uniform stress distribution, whereas higher porosity leads to faster accumulation of plastic strain in the sintered layer. During chip packaging processes, improving processes to reduce the porosity of sintered layers can delay the initiation of damage and the propagation of cracks in sintered nanosilver.

Originality/value

This paper innovatively uses a mesoscopic crystal plasticity constitutive model and a macroscopic unified creep plasticity constitutive model to analyze the mechanical behavior of sintered nanosilver with different porosities. It comprehensively investigates and explains the influence of porosity on the mechanical performance of sintered nanosilver across multiple scales.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to mesoscopically analyze the impact of parameter variations in the random pore structure on the stress distribution of layered-porous sintered silver used in high-power electronics, and to conduct a variable importance analysis of the parameter variations in the random pore structure.

Design/methodology/approach

Sintered silver, featuring a porous structure, improves thermal and mechanical performance by effectively absorbing stress and facilitating heat dissipation. To ensure the performance and scalability of layered-porous sintered silver, this paper uses Gaussian random fields to model the random pore structure and performs a sensitivity analysis on pore characteristic length and porosity, both of which significantly impact the stress distribution within the sintered silver layer. First, multiple sets of random pore models with varying characteristic lengths and porosities were generated using Gaussian random fields. Then, the maximum stress of the sintered silver layer containing random pores under power cycling conditions was extracted. Finally, the Morris screening method was used to perform a sensitivity analysis on the variables of the random pore structure that affect the maximum stress in the sintered silver layer. The systematic evaluation of the parameter variations in the random pore structure was conducted to assess their impacts on the maximum stress in the sintered silver layer.

Findings

Due to the high randomness of the pore structure generated by the Gaussian random field function, the maximum stress in the sintered layer fluctuates with different mesoscopic models. After systematic evaluation using the Morris screening method, it was found that the maximum stress in the sintered silver layer is most sensitive to the variation in the pore characteristic length in the x-direction. Reducing the length of pores in the x-direction can significantly decrease the stress concentration between pores in the sintered silver layer after power cycling.

Originality/value

This paper innovatively uses a Gaussian random field to model the mesoscopic structure of layered-porous sintered silver for high-power electronics, and applies the Morris screening method to perform variable importance analysis on the stress distribution results within the sintered silver layers. The mesoscopic study demonstrates that the maximum stress in the sintered silver layer is most sensitive to changes in the pore characteristic length in the x-direction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate physiological indices related to comfort and health condition, based on which corresponding electronic equipment are selected and applied. A wearable monitoring system using sensor and liquid crystal display (LCD) techniques are then designed. Sensors are used to collect and transmit recording required signals from the wearer. A microcomputer with the type of AT89C52 is used to record and analyze the collected data. LCD is applied to display the health and comfort condition of the wearer.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel wearable monitoring system for the measurement of physiological indices and clothing microclimate is proposed in this study in order to monitoring both health and comfort condition of the wearer.

Findings

The proposed system provides reference for the application of sensor and display technologies in the field of smart clothing, which can be further applied to infant and child care, health care, home entertainment, military and industry.

Originality/value

This paper, first, investigated a framework of a wearable monitoring system considering both comfort and health condition and summarized the related physiological indices. The requirements of both comfort and health condition monitoring are analyzed to select appropriate electronic elements.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to build a mathematical model of men’s wear prototype, so that the computer can draw men’s wear prototype automatically.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the bust line, front and back center line, waist line, side seam, front chest width and back width line in the coordinate system are expressed by equations. Then, a parabola is used to establish a neckline curve, a linear equation is used to establish a shoulder oblique line, and a double ellipse is superposed to construct the armhole arc. Finally, all the garment prototype curves are built mathematical models.

Findings

The result shows that every curve of garment prototype can be expressed approximately by mathematical model.

Originality/value

This research lays the foundation for the automation and intelligence of garment pattern-making.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present recent work for optimizing the estimation of ease allowance of a garment using fuzzy logic and sensory evaluation.

Design/methodology/approach

The current method first generates a number of fuzzy models each corresponding to one specific key body part and one specific wearer's movement and then aggregates all the values of ease allowance generated from these fuzzy models using the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) operator. The aggregated ease allowance takes into account geometric measures on all representative human bodies, comfort sensations of wearers related to all movements or actions and different styles of trousers (tight, normal and loose). The weights of the OWA operator can be used to adjust the compromise between the style of garments and the comfort sensation of wearers. The related weights of the OWA operator are automatically determined according to designer's linguistic criteria characterizing the relationship between wearer's movements and the features of the garment to be designed.

Findings

Based on the optimized values of ease allowance generated from fuzzy models related to different key body positions and different wearer's movements, the authors obtain a personalized ease allowance, permitting to further improve the wearer's fitting perception of a garment. The effectiveness of the method has been validated in the design of trousers of jean type. It can also be applied for designing other types of garment.

Originality/value

Integration of wearer's body shapes and human comfort in the design of personalized garments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to conduct a theoretical prediction study exploring the effectiveness of different content marketing strategies in expanding the second-hand market for fashion brands, comparing the costs and risks involved in these strategies in practice.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the expert interview method is employed to extract the content marketing strategies of the fashion second-hand market. Then, a descriptive space that is able to identify various fashion brand images is established. Then, experts' perceptions of the relationships between content marketing strategies and fashion brand image dimensions are obtained through a subjective evaluation procedure. Data of semantic evaluation were quantified and analyzed using the fuzzy logic method.

Findings

When fashion brands expand to the second-hand market, they not only need to focus on improving the individual differentiation of products but also give priority to the quality of products and services and the overall customer experience. Exploring the “social impact strategy” will become an important direction for the development of fashion brands in the future.

Originality/value

The research methodology employed herein exhibits a noteworthy degree of novelty. This study introduces a pioneering theoretical prediction approach utilizing fuzzy logic, marking the inaugural exploration of this emerging and captivating dimension within the context of the study. Simultaneously, the study provides comparative results among content marketing strategies for expanding the fashion second-hand market, offering guidance for market expansion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve active sonar detection performance in shallow water. A stochastic‐like model multivariate elliptically contoured (MEC) distributions is defined to model reverberation, which helps to reveal structure information of target signatures.

Design/methodology/approach

Active sonar systems have been developed with wider transmission bandwidths and larger aperture receiving array, which improve the signal‐to‐noise ratio and reverberation power ratio after matched filtering and beamforming. But, it has changed the statistical distribution of the reverberation‐induced envelope from the traditionally assumed Rayleigh distribution. The MEC is a kind of generalized non‐Gaussian distribution model. The authors theoretically derive the compound Gaussian, Rayleigh‐mixture, Weibull, K distributions are all special cases of MEC. It is known that Weibull and K distributions have obvious heavy‐tail than Rayleigh distribution. MEC is a suitable model to characterize non‐Rayleigh heavy‐tailed distribution of reverberation.

Findings

The analysis of test data shows reverberation envelopes obviously deviate Rayleigh distribution. In a broad non‐Gaussian framework, reverberation is modelled as MEC distribution, which is suitable to characterize non‐Rayleigh reverberation. The received data in trials validate the effectiveness of MEC model. The real data envelops follows K distribution, which is a special case of MEC. So, the MEC can be applied to develop novel signal‐processing algorithms that mitigate or account for the effects of the heavy‐tailed reverberation distributions on the target detection.

Research limitations/implications

The limited sea test data are the main limitation to prove model validation in further.

Practical implications

A very useful model for representing reverberation in shallow‐water.

Originality/value

The MECs in fact represent an attractive set data model for adaptive array, and it provides a theoretic framework to design an optimal or sub‐optimal detector.

Abstract

Purpose

Current lubrication analyses of misaligned journal bearings were generally performed under some given preconditions. To make the lubrication analysis closer to the actual situation and usable to the journal bearing design, the purpose of this paper was to calculate the lubrication characteristics of misaligned journal bearings considering the viscosity-pressure effect of the oil, the surface roughness and the elastic deformation of the journal bearing at the same time.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubrication of bearings was analyzed using the average Reynolds equation. The deformation of the bearing surface under oil film pressure was calculated by a compliance matrix method. The compliance matrix was established by finite element analysis of the bearing housing. The viscosity-pressure and viscosity–temperature equations were used in the analysis.

Findings

The oil viscosity-pressure relationship has a significant effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings. The surface roughness will affect the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings when the eccentricity ratio and angle of journal misalignment are all large. The directional parameter of the surface has an obvious effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings. The deformation of the bearing surface has a remarkable effect on the lubrication of misaligned journal bearings.

Originality/value

The lubrication characteristics of misaligned journal bearings were calculated considering the viscosity-pressure effect of the oil, the surface roughness and the elastic deformation of the journal bearing at the same time. The results of this paper are helpful to the design of the bearing.
